HOW TO GET FREE BOOKS LEGALLY

This is a post for those just starting out on Bookstagram. There are various sites from where you can get free books in exchange for your review on or around publication date.

NetGalley
The most popular of course, is NetGalley. With NetGalley, I would say you are the mercy of publishers. Most publishers use your feedback ratio, social media followings and a host of other parameters to approve your request to read their books. Let me warn that the rejection hurts.

Booksprout
This is mostly used by indie authors. On Booksprout, you the reader actually get to choose which books to read and you can follow your favorite authors (if they are listed)and be alerted when they have new books for review.

Booksirens

When you join Booksirens, you are limited to the number of books you can download. But after you have submitted a couple of reviews, you will be invited to download more. With Booksirens, you can see the number of pages and the type of endings.

Voracious Readers

This works a bit differently from all the others. When you sign up, you will select the kind of genres you read and when they have new books in your preferred genres, you will receive an email asking you to confirm if you want to read the book. You then receive a copy of the book.

Authors and promo companies

Authors can also provide you with ARCs of their books. Mostly when you subscribe to their newsletters, you will get this privilege or sometimes just following them on SM you will know.
Also promo companies have a master list that you sign up for and when there are ARCs available they will inform you. Signing up for a master list does not guarantee you the ARC but different companies have different policies.

❓OTD: Do you know of other ways to receive free books?

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

This is a Hallmark Christmas movie in a book.

I haven’t read the previous books in this series and the author has managed to convince me to do so.

The plot is centred around the Sugar and Spice Cafe and the people who work in through its door- each with their own burden and interests.

I enjoyed reading about the characters but it wasn’t quite easy catching up with them at the beginning of the book.

I liked the communal spirit that the author wove around the cafe. The idea of Christmas desserts from around the world was a winner. The themes are very relatable and the description of the setting gorgeous.

If you are looking for a holiday read that combines the gaiety of Christmas with everyday reality then you should read this.

I received an advanced copy and my review is voluntary.

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

Is it too early to start Christmas reads?

Lula has just been sacked after a disaster involving the UK‘s most famous bear, Paddington, and Santa Claus. She accepts a job offer in a remote Scottish castle where she also agreed to pretend to be the owner Ollie’s wife.

This book, despite its title, is an emotional one and will make you feel all the feelings. It rings true of what the holidays can be in the light of grief.

I enjoyed it. From the start, there was no dull moment. The author pulled readers right in from Oxford Street to the Mull of Kintyre and it was a jolly good ride.

I loved the characters, especially the children, who delighted and delivered with cheeky wit and innocent wisdom. Their grandparents were also fantastic. The chemistry between the main characters was done just right. It wasn’t cheesy or over the top.

I love the castle and all that happened in it. I loved how the library was described and showcased- a bookworm’s dream.

Simply put, the author nailed it and delivered.

If you’re looking for a fun, cozy Christmas story with a beautiful setting, this is your book.

❓OTD: If you were not working your current job, what would you be doing?

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

Today is my stop on the Writer In Residence tour organised by @hearourvoicestours

When you expect a story to go in a direction but the author surprises you- this was my experience with this book.

The plot is full of culture, history and experience. It is an eye opener.

Writer in Residence is the story of Alex, who is struggling with writer’s block, and her search for her identity and her father.

Written in the first person, I enjoyed the start of the book and all of the ‘conflicts’ introduced. Even though it took more than three quarters of the book for the main conflict to be resolved, there was no dull moment.

What I particularly enjoyed was the author’s ability to keep up engagement and interest. Besides the big reveal, there were several other things going on to sustain interest.

I loved learning about the Gullah-Geeche people- their customs, culture, language and way of life.

The writing style was simple and easy. It was descriptive and the narrative was straightforward and the characters were amazing.

Fans of clean romance will enjoy this.

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

This started off with the assumption that the reader had read the previous books in the series and had met the main characters.

There were also some missing backstory/background and context. It makes the book not a standalone.

Unleashed is the story of co-workers Trevor and Maren, who can’t stand each other, and their ‘budding’ relationship.

It was hard getting into the beginning of the book but as I read more and figured out names/relationships and the past, it was smooth sailing.

The dialogue was interesting and I enjoyed the found family dynamics. The push and pull tension between the main characters was really good.

Fans of found family and workplace romance will enjoy this.

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

I’ve enjoyed every Julie Shackman book I’ve read and this is no exception.

The book follows the story of Poppy and Mason who are interested in uncovering the secrets about a local ‘legend’, the Scarlet Highwayman.

The Highlands setting was one of the major highlights of the book and uncovering the history of the legend was the next one.

I love the storytelling, dialogue and how the past and present were weaved together. The characters were spectacular and delivered.

I would have liked for the romantic connection between Poppy and Mason to be explored further as their relationship in the epilogue appears too hasty.

Nevertheless, this would make a perfect end of summer read.

I received an advanced copy and my review is voluntary.

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

This was a pleasant addition to the ongoing series and follows the story of music teacher Mirren and band leader, Adam.

I enjoyed this and loved the way the story flowed with all of the events and circumstances moving chronologically. I particularly loved the chemistry between the main characters. It was tender and well thought out.

This book will make you feel all the emotions and you won’t want to put it down.

All of the books in the series can be read as a standalone.

📚BOOK 📖 REVIEW📚

An ode to Portugal, mothers and book clubs. This was a very hilarious read; a different and interesting path from the author’s usual approach.

After suffering from a terrible betrayal, Viviane has been tasked by her mother to make new friends. She starts a silent book club of sorts which soon fills up with various characters.

I enjoyed this so much as we navigate through the club’s ‘mystery’ and their various shenanigans. It is about finding your own people and accepting their quirkiness.

I loved how the author touched on each character’s life, the Portuguese family life and the neurodivergent experience of some of the characters.

This is a comfort and heartfelt read which will not be forgotten in a hurry.
