May flew by so quickly and I am terribly behind on reviews. I decided to try and tackle House of Leaves one more time as part of a buddy read and happy to say I only have a few pages left. It only took me four tries!

I didn’t read quite as much as I wanted to this month - my favorite read was If We Were Villains. I think any fans of Shakespeare, theater, and mystery would enjoy it.

I’ve started June off with two great reads - My Heart is a Chainsaw and an ARC of A Forbidden Alchemy 🧪 (also trying to finish HoL ASAP 😅)

🫧 June recap 🫧

3 posts in one week?! Who is she.

June was the best reading month I’ve had in a long time. I finished 11 books in June and I enjoyed all of them! My favorites were Open Throat and Hunchback, and I’m happy I finished another volume of Berserk (2 more deluxe editions to go! And then the standard volumes that have been released after deluxe volume 14).

I also went on a weekend book retreat where I had so much time to read, talk about books, and exchange books. It was fabulous 💕

Hopefully July is another great month!

📚 Bewk Haul 📚

An instagram ad got me. I saw a $5.99 Book Outlet sale and I was curious 👀 I’ve seen a lot of people buy books from there so I wanted to check it out for myself. There were some great options and I ended up with 4 including shipping for under $30!

And of course my assistant Gomez had to help me unbox. He has taken ownership of the box now 📦

💊 TBR Tuesday Part 7 💊

💭 What is your favorite meal to cook or eat?

We Could Be Rats was fantastic and I’m a new Emily R. Austin fan. I realized pretty quickly that I am absolutely the target audience for her writing. The book is very much peppered with dark humor but with heart and emotional depth. I can’t wait to read more of her work.

On to the next TBR pick! This time I had a little extra help from my son 🥰

Butter by Asako Yuzuki was admittedly a book I picked up solely based on the title and cover. I’m a sucker for a good cover 🤭 but the synopsis also sounds great! The story follows a journalist, Rika, who is covering a story about a female gourmet cook and serial killer, Manako Kajii. Kajii refuses to talk to the press but agrees to start meeting with Rika after she asks her for her beef stew recipe.

I am not sure what to expect with this one but I’ve been interested after seeing a few of my friends on here review Butter!

💊 TBR Tuesday (part 6) 💊

Is there an author you have had on your TBR for a while but haven’t read yet?

One of those authors is Emily R. Austin for me. I have two of her books and she has been recommended to me by multiple people that I trust. So I was really happy when I pulled We Could Be Rats from the jar this week!

We Could Be Rats is about two estranged sisters that are navigating the trauma and grief of their upbringing, and finding their way back to each other by embracing their childhood imaginations.

The author also created a playlist to accompany the book and I absolutely love when authors do this!

💊 Episode 5 of TBR Tuesday 💊

Do you have a planned TBR or more of a mood reader?

Confession time… during my social media break, I drew 2 pills from the jar 🤭 I read Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa (loved it) and almost done with We Love You, Bunny (struggling a bit to want to pick it up).

I have had The Picture of Dorian Gray on the shelf for a few years and on the “want to read” list even longer. I’ve never seen an adaptation either! What I know of the premise is that it is gothic and Dorian wishes his portrait would age instead of him. He lived recklessly as his portrait decays and disfigured over time. I’m so excited to finally get to this one!

What was the last book you brought home? See any of these you would move to the top of the TBR?

I have been trying to be more intentional about the books I bring home. I went through and consolidated back in December and these are books I’ve picked up recently through various book trips.

Most of these are recs from friends and I want to read all of them simultaneously 🤭 I’ve started and almost finished A Parade of Horribles because I just couldn’t wait.

Last slide has 3 more I found yesterday.

Gomez couldn’t help himself and had to inspect the haul 🐈‍⬛

💊 Welcome back to another episode of TBR Tuesday (part 4) 💊

Howl’s Moving Castle was great, I’m so glad I finally read it. I very rarely say this, but I like the Miyazaki movie better 🫣 the book was so different and just didn’t have as much whimsy as I was expecting. But I thought Sophie’s journey was well worth the read and it was a satisfying ending.

My next pick is Bad Cree by Jessica Johns. She curated a playlist filled with nostalgic emo music for this book that I am SO excited to listen to. The song for this reel is from that playlist 😊 I try to avoid reading too much about a book before going in… I just know this is a supernatural grief horror and I am a big fan of grief horror. This has been on my shelf close to when I started this account, thanking the jar that I finally picked this one to read!

💊 TBR Tuesday Part 3 💊

Welcome to the next installment of TBR Tuesday featuring my kitten, Gomez 🐈‍⬛

I finished The Book of Elsewhere and I enjoyed it! Not a top read for me, but still overall enjoyed the story and the reflection on mortality. I think I could have benefited from reading BRZRKR first, but I read the wiki page before diving in (thank you @lilgreenlibrary_ for the tip) and that helped me with the context before reading.

The next pull from the pill jar made me squeal with excitement 🤭 I have been hoping to pull this book for a while and I’m so glad to finally get to it. Howl’s Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies and when Fairyloot announced the special edition, I jumped at the chance to get it. It’s BEAUTIFUL 🤩 I hope the story is great too!

💊 TBR Tuesday Part 2 💊

The last TBR book (Infinite Country) was short and very sad. For my next pick, I was hoping to pick something a little less heavy. I know next to nothing about The Book of Elsewhere by Keanu Reeves and China Miéville other than it is about an immortal warrior, B, who is seeking to end his eternal life.

So I’m moving from a sad book to an action thriller 🤗 I love these TBR pills because I’m reminded why I picked up the book in the first place - The Book of Elsewhere was purchased simply because I love Keanu Reeves, I saw it in the new & noteworthy section, and I liked the cover 😆 hopefully I like the book!

💊 TBR Tuesday Part 1 💊

The first pick from my refreshed TBR jar is Infinite Country by Patricia Engel.

Time describes this novel as a “heartbreaking portrait of a family dealing with the realities of migration and separation”.

This was drawn at random but feels painfully relevant with the current climate in the US and the continued cruelty towards undocumented people and families. Stories like this are important. The reality that families can be split apart by bad policy and circumstance is devastating. I’m expecting this to be an emotional read.

💊 Books are medicine 💊

Resetting my TBR pill jar so I can chip away at my large list of physical TBR books 🫣

In the time that I stepped away from social media, I tried to reduce my physical TBR but ended up acquiring more. I decided to start fresh and write down all my physical books I need to read to draw at random.

I am a chaotic reader so this is how I can balance getting through what I already have. I read multiple books at a time so I can still mood read and join my buddy reads with this method 🙌

This is so fun for me and hope you’ll come along for the ride as I work my way through my never ending TBR 📚 I’ll be posting the first drawing tomorrow!
