This book chronicles the lives of five strangers who share the same daily commute. They have invented nicknames for their fellow travelers and imagined the lives they might be living. But as always, reality hits differently; each person is quietly coping with their own life struggles.

The story is beautiful because it shows how these strangers slowly bond and support one another, proving how a community can come together to help you. It felt nostalgic for me, as I have witnessed this firsthand in India while commuting on the Mumbai locals.

This is the third Clare Pooley that I have read, and it is safe to say I will look forward to her future releases. Her signature themes of human connection, community, and new beginnings at any age are feel-good and deeply motivating.

I would rate this a solid 4/5 stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Three book, three different kinds of magic, each with a little something that lingers long after the last page.

Which kind of magic would you pick?

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón | 4.25/5 ⭐

This book is unlike any other I’ve read.

While most mystery thrillers lean heavily on the thriller aspect, this one takes its time with the mystery, slowly drawing you into its world. Central to the story are Daniel and Julian, whose lives run almost parallel to each other in love, writing, books and friendship.

There are gothic and spooky elements that add to the intrigue, but what I enjoyed was how the story takes you through the streets of Barcelona, with its political climate forming the backdrop.

It may not be a traditional classic, but it certainly has the feel of one. A book about books, stories, love and the lives that can become entangled across time. A very good read.

I rate this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5).
Truthfully, I picked this up only because it is based on Norse mythology. I hadn’t heard of Angrboda before, so I enjoyed discovering her story and seeing the familiar Norse gods from her perspective. I liked how the book brings together mythology, love, motherhood, friendship and fate without making it feel like a straightforward retelling. The idea of knowing what is destined to happen and still choosing how to live was probably what I found most interesting about the story.

Somehow these editions have been sitting on my shelf, looking far too pretty to ignore and still waiting to be read.

So now I’m curious: if you had this set in front of you, which one would you pick up first?

And yes, I may have bought them partly because they look this good.

Set in the 1960s, Lessons in Chemistry follows Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist trying to build a career in a field where being a woman already puts her at a disadvantage.

We also see Elizabeth become a mother and navigate raising a child while trying to hold on to her own identity and ambitions. Later, when she finds herself hosting a cooking show, she makes sure it becomes much more than what the people behind it had intended. She brings her own ideas, her own voice and, very importantly, does it on her terms.

I really loved the little pieces of her life outside of all this too. Her friendship with her neighbour Harriet, which slowly becomes something that feels like family. Her love for rowing, which starts with Calvin but eventually becomes her own. The way she raises Madeline, her daughter, to be curious, independent and question everything. And Six-Thirty, the dog who is honestly one of the most memorable characters in the book!

I rate this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5!

There’s something about books where the characters start off feeling like they don’t quite belong, and somewhere along the way, they find their people. Those stories always stay with me.

These three gave me that exact feeling — in funny, emotional and wonderfully different ways.

What a book this was.

I was on a streak of heavy, deeply thought-provoking reads, and The Rivers in the Sky was perhaps the most immersive of them all.

The story follows three protagonists: Arthur, Narin and Zaleekha; separated by centuries, geography and circumstance. And yet, their stories converge through one constant: Water.

We travel through their lives, their struggles and the trials they are forced to endure, but this is a story that becomes much bigger than its three protagonists. It stays with you because of the worlds it opens up and the questions it leaves behind.

The book touches upon so many difficult realities - poverty, the exploitation and abuse of water, displacement, and the horrific violence inflicted on people by ISIS. Yet, alongside all of this, it takes us through the extraordinary beauty and history of Mesopotamia.

And then there is Elif Shafak’s writing; poetic and evocative. She has a way of turning something as elemental as water into a character of its own.

And perhaps what I will remember most is its central idea: people come and go, civilisations rise and fall, but water remains. It flows through centuries, carrying stories and remembering what we leave behind.

Some cafés serve coffee. Others serve second chances.

From a neighborhood bookshop in Seoul to a time-travel café in Tokyo, a London café where strangers become friends, and a charming little café on the French coast, these stories remind us that the right place, the right people, and a warm cup of coffee can quietly change a life.

If you love books where cafés become sanctuaries and every cup of coffee comes with a story, these four belong on your TBR.
