The author Viktor E. Frankl’s personal experience was what drew me to this book.

As a Holocaust survivor, the author recalled his experience in Nazi death camps and the reflection for spiritual survival. He argues that having something meaningful to live for can help a person endure even the most difficult circumstances. He introduced his psychological domain, logotherapy (logos = meaning), which asserts that suffering is an inevitable part of life, and the search for meaning is one of the fundamental motivation to push through and move forward.

I used to be rather oblivious about history, but my partner has kindly guided me through this difficult read by also explaining the historical context of it. If you consider reading this book, I suggest to have preliminary understanding on the world wars too.

Truly touching one.

This is a work by No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author Philippa Perry about life’s big problem: relationships. The language is witty and easy to follow, but I personally think it lacks depth and most statements are rather self-explanatory.

I still find some statements helpful though, i.e., “When someone else belittles you, you don’t have to play the victim to their persecution. For example, in response to the insult “You’re stupid,” you could say, “Oh, you think I’m stupid, thanks for letting me know.”

I mean... in moderation of course. I still believe we have to be open to negative inputs. The way I would translate this is to take negative feedback positively (hard, I know). From the situation example, one can reflect, “Maybe there is a part of me that I need to challenge and educate further.”

I heard the author’s other piece “The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read” is good too, but I haven’t put them on my wishlist. Maybe one day...

Completed reading ‘the most buzzed about books (and one that might just change your life)’ according to Sunday Times. I can finally understand the buzz.

Love is an inevitable part of our lives, and this book dives through its sophisticated dynamics. Through this book, I’ve learned (and re-learned) to dare to love, both myself and others. I’ve also learned to accept that loss is part of love, and that the fear of it means you cut yourself off from love. “If loss was a necessary part of life, then acceptance was too.”

Somehow, I can feel this book’s lightness and easiness to follow, and depth at the same time. Probably because it’s relatability and uniqueness that makes people feel like they’re not alone in their problems.

If you’re new to non-fictional books, and keen to read not-to-much scientific piece, I highly recommend this book.

I’ve always heard from other reader friends about Fyodor Dostoevsky’s fascinating work, and most would say it’s dense and hard to follow (spoiler alert: it is). But White Nights here is a great start.

A tender and melancholic story about a lonely dreamer who yearns for a connection, only to realise that even the sweetest moments don’t last forever. It delicately tells the intrication of love at the first sight and infatuation. I was so immersed as it is a fictional story that is also close enough to how love sometimes work in real life. Brief yet dreamy encounters, imagined futures, sounds familiar?

Quite an easy and quick read, the book is small you can carry it anywhere conveniently too!

What makes the experience of reading tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom memorable is because I watch the documentary of Professor Morrie on the side. The way the professor speaks touches me I couldn’t help but cry.

This book strongly reminds us all the things we tend to take for granted in life: how connection matters more than achievement, that love is an action, and slowing down means choosing what really counts in this short life.

💐 “The truth is, Mitch,” he said, “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live”
💐 It’s not just other people we need to forgive. We also need to forgive ourselves. For all the things we didn’t do. All the things we should have done. You can’t get stuck on the regrets of what should have happened.

A short yet powerful read. One that reminds you rethink about your priority and focus on life, “Maybe I can appreciate more the little things in life. Maybe I should love life better.”

We’re all going to leave someday, and the real question is how well we choose to live today.

You know what I just learned? Self-development books don’t always come in form of non-fictions and complicated psychology stuff. It can also come in such a beautifully created fictions that allows you to relate with the characters through third-person view.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is truly lifechanging. No, I’m not exaggerating. They really are. This book gives me the courage to pursue my Personal Legend—my extraordinary, big dreams.

☀️ When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.
☀️ In order to find the treasure, you will have to follow the omens. God has prepared a path for everyone to follow. You just have to read the omens that He left for you.
☀️ If a person is living out his Personal Legend, he knows everything he needs to know. There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.
☀️ Pursuing one’s dreams (the treasure) shouldn’t mean forgetting to appreciate the journey itself.

I couldn’t hold back my tears while reading the book. I love every line I read. Suddenly, life is worth living again.

Another book review coming right up! (Yes I know it’s been a while)

This time, I’m bringing up something different. Unlike the other non-fiction books, Start with Why by Simon Sinek focuses particularly on business management. Or to put it in my own word, other books I’ve read usually focus more on growing ourselves, this one is more about growing businesses. It breaks down real-life business cases, exploring why some leaders/businesses stand out in the market.

This book is suitable for aspiring business leaders, startup founders, or someone who basically just wants to inspire others around them!
💼 The WHY is a belief, HOWs are the actions we take to realise that belief, and WHATs are the results of those actions. When all three are in balance, trust is built and value is perceived.
💼 Good companies don’t sell lifestyle. They integrate to the lifestyle of people who share the same WHY as them.

So this is what life feels like when you have a strict but caring mentor around you!

12 Rules of Life by Jordan B. Peterson lays out how we can live our lives better, as in saying, “Here’s how you can live better, no excuses.”

Some rules are straightforward and rather parental (stand up straight with your shoulders back, take responsibility and accountability). Others are much deeper... it reminds us to recognise that chaos is just part of Being, part of life.

You are getting a set of principles that act less like quick fixes and more like guides to hold onto when life feels too much.

🤍 Standing up will not only genuinely increase the probability that good things will happen to you — it will also make those good things feel better when they do happen
🤍 You are NOT morally obliged to support someone who is making the world a worse place

Healthy relationships: “Join me in my chaos, not to help me eliminate it but to help me tolerate it”

This book gave me a new perspective on what it really means to “love” - something stronger beyond the butterflies and intense emotions. David Richo lays out the Five A’s of Love (Attention, Acceptance, Appreciation, Affection, and Allowing) as the foundation of healthy relationships in multiple contexts: romantic, family, friendships, and even with yourself.

It reminded me that maturity in relationships is learning to balance our own needs with others’, and not losing ourselves in the process.
🧡 You will need arms that can that can hold a frightened inner child without losing respect for the outer adult
🧡 Once we love ourselves, people no longer look good to us unless they are good for us
🧡 We may feel our life is meaningless if we are not in love with someone. If so, we discredit ourselves and miss out on all the rest of what our life is about

This book doesn’t only discuss “romantic love,” it’s really about how to show up for yourself and others in a healthy, grounded way.

It took me a while to finish The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk - not because it was boring, but because it requires me to actually sit with it. I personally find some parts were heavy and deeply disturbing, so I chose not to include preview here due to potentially triggering content.

This book shows that trauma isn’t just a moment in the past - it has shaped how we see the world, and how we protect ourselves against potential dangers. It is about how trauma shapes the brain and body - and how healing involves reclaiming the self, piece by piece.

It reminded me that healing takes more than reflection. It needs support and a willingness to face the parts of us we’ve buried. The truth is uncomfortable - but necessary.

📍 Trauma causes people to remain stuck in interpreting the present in light of an unchanging past.
📍 As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself.

I strongly recommend this book - but if you’ve experienced trauma, please don’t read this alone. Professional support is highly advised.

📘 Lighter by Yung Pueblo

What makes this book memorable is how it reminds me of one simple truth: life is impermanent. Everything - the joy, the chaos, the healing, the heartbreak - is all temporary. And that’s actually comforting. Because it means that even when you’re struggling, it won’t last forever. And when things are good, it teaches you to be present and grateful, not attached or afraid.

A few lessons that stay:
✨ Even if someone is inviting you to be angry, you don’t have to accept the invitation.
✨ If you let your past rule you, it’ll be hard to love others well in the present.
✨ Maturity is being able to hold your own energy steady, even when someone else is in chaos.

This book would show you how to observe, reflect, and stay grounded, even when life is testing you.
It’s a calm, affirming, and steady read that helps you feel just that - Lighter.

📘 Healing Is the New High by Vex King was bought when I was having a severe delay in my flight back from London. I was devastated and tired (of course, what’s worse than 2 days delay?!) I knew I needed something to calm me down and soothe my mind, and then saw this book at Istanbul Airport.

It turned out to be just what I needed. The way Vex breaks down healing is clear and relatable. It’s not just about dealing with the past - it’s about learning how to move forward with more peace and confidence. Of course, this comes with practical guides specifically on meditation as well!

Some points that really stuck with me:
✨ Other people’s perception of you is a reflection of them
✨ All kinds of good things are going to happen. Even when you experience difficult times again, you have everything you need to get through them
✨ Balance the acceptance that you can do better AND acceptance of who you are

This is a mix of gentle reminders and practical advice. A good one to pick up when your emotions feel all over the place.
