Thank you so much to everyone who suggested books on my last post. I ended up with far more ideas than I needed, so to keep things manageable, I picked out the titles I knew the least about (some of the others I am already planning on reading). I also prioritised anything I could borrow easily — either from the library or on audiobook.

*Meet the Bookstagrammer*

As its my birthday I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself.

* I live in West Yorkshire with my high school aged son. I have been with my partner for five years but we enjoy our own space so we don’t live together. I am happiest whilst snuggled under a blanket with a good book (I might be from the North but I like to be warm and cosy).

* Tea is my beverage of choice (whether it be a traditional English breakfast or a sticky chai). It arguably verges on an obsession with my ever expanding collection of tea parapanelia.

* I love the seaside and the Yorkshire coast is my happy place.

* I am a book rather than an ebook kind of girl but I am partial to an audio book. I have quite eclectic reading tastes but histofical and literary fiction are my favourite genras and I do have a likening for biographies.

* When a book isn't in hand I enjoy pottering around my garden, short form cricket and live comedy.

I have very little idea what the judges will actually choose but it’s fun to try and guess.

*Waterstones Debut Prize For Fiction*

Later today we find out who will be awarded the Waterstones Debut Prize of the Year — but before we do, here are my thoughts on the shortlist.

Six books, six very different reading experiences: chaotic satire, gothic family oddness, magical‑realist history, quiet grief, ghostly historical imagination, and a meditative story of faith and desire.

Some I loved, some I liked, and one was almost s dnf.

*Blog Tour Review — The Colour of Home*

I’ve been thinking about this one ever since I finished it,so I am really pleased to get a second chance to shout about it. And if my first post didn’t convince you to pick it up, hopefully this one does the trick.

Why you should read this:
A quietly absorbing WW2 novel, The Colour of Home follows three young Black men from a segregated Florida town as they enter military service, and Cora, who waits at home and has to face the return of men shaped by experiences she couldn’t have prepared for. It’s thoughtful and grounded, with a clear eye on the dignity they found abroad and the prejudice waiting for them back home.

What stayed with me is the aftermath — the slow, often uncomfortable work of figuring out who you are once life’s knocked you sideways, and how each of them tries to make sense of a town that hasn’t changed even though they have. Cora’s storyline especially struck me, with her quiet fight for fairness and justice and the strength it takes to hold her ground when the world around her refuses to shift.

You’d enjoy this if you like character‑driven historical fiction with an emotional heart.

Thank you so much to @viperbooks for this selection of books. I’m genuinely delighted — and a little overwhelmed — to receive this package.

I’m always on the lookout for new crime writers, and Garry Disher — one of Australia’s most prolific, with over 60 titles and three Ned Kelly Awards for Best Novel to his name — feels like someone I’m really going to enjoy.

A mix of standalones and a couple from his series; a great introduction to his writing.

*New Books Thursday*

New Books Thursday… I’ve decided it’s a thing now. First day at work this week, so I think it’s allowed — and honestly, how good do these look? Thank you so much to the fab folk at @cassavarepublicpress for sending these two lovely books my way.

Aquatics: A tense, unsettling look at privilege and complicity as Katme’s carefully ordered life begins to crack when her friend Samy’s art exposes the violence of a repressive regime — forcing her to reckon with loyalty, silence and the cost of comfort.

The Shipikisha Club: A riveting Zambian courtroom drama following Sali’s murder trial and the long, painful history that led her there — a marriage built on expectation and endurance, gender politics laid bare, and the truths only she can hold.

I can’t wait for both of these. They sound so good.
