⠀
📚 The Half-God of Rainfall
by Inua Ellams
⠀
Synopsis (via @goodreads): From the award-winning poet and playwright behind Barber Shop Chronicles, The Half-God of Rainfall is an epic story and a lyrical exploration of pride, power and female revenge.
⠀
There is something about the boy. When he is angry, clouds darken. When he cries, rivers burst their banks. And when he touches a basketball, deities want courtside seats. Half Nigerian mortal, half Grecian God: Demi is the Half-God of Rainfall.
⠀
His mother, Modupe, looks on with a mixture of pride and worry. From close encounters, she knows that Gods are just like men: the same fragile egos, the same subsequent fury, the same sense of entitlement to the bodies of mortals. The Gods will one day tire of sports fans, their fickle allegiances and their prayers to Demi.
⠀
And when that moment comes, it won’t matter how special he is. Only the women in Demi’s life, the mothers, the Goddesses, will stand between him and a lightning bolt.
⠀
❤️ This is a classic or it should be. It reads like folklore, yet reimagines Greek gods with today’s accountability. This short and powerful book gives visibility and validation to Orishas in mainstream storytelling. It is a maddening, saddening, and victorious ride. I loved every second and want so much more.
⠀
✨I plan to read everything by this author! Are you familiar with the works of Inua Ellams?

Kat

This is my official THANK YOU post! This community means so much to me. I started this account as a school assignment in undergraduate school and ever since then I have to come back to this community time and time again. I’ve returned for love and support, book recommendations, and to share in my joy of reading with cosplay to bring the characters to life and more recently podcasting. Your unyielding support just means the absolute world to me, especially now in grad school when I have assignments that I may need tester feedback. So, again, this post is a thank you for my final project for INFO 237, where I had to create a promotional physical and digital book display encouraging reading for pleasure. I created an interactive board game online and also created a physical book display. I asked a few friends here online if they would be so kind as to check the site out and give me their honest feedback. The feedback was invaluable so I want to say thank you to @seanathan_the_griot_polidore Media (Marco Polo), @never_withouta_book @hawa.reads @creemyles @thestackspod @askmateo @djreadsbooks @ems_bookish_thoughts @thereadingroom444 @black_girls_lit @bookitqueen @brisbookish @jacxnaut @goddessbriana93 Stephanie (FB), Nhela (FB), Carla (FB), and Tikeyla (text).

Huge thank you Zoni (San Mateo County), @afrofuturism_academy @sistahscifi for collaborating with me on my physical book display!

I greatly appreciate each and every last one of you. If I missed anyone, please blame it on my head and not my heart. Thank you you all, from my whole heart.

I will post the direct link to my final project on threads! Again thank you all! I’ve submitted this assignment and now awaiting my final grade! 🙏🏾

This look is inspired by the cover from...

📚 The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw
⠀
⠀
✨ Do you ever read the epigraph?
⠀
It's just a short quotation or saying at the beginning of a book or chapter, intended to suggest its theme.
⠀
As quoted in the reel, this one from this book did not disappoint. Although the ladies each deal with their situations differently, the offense is the same. The church gaze, much like the white gaze is everywhere. In this reel, I chose this imagery to depict that what we show on the outside, to please others, is not always our true self.
⠀
✨ Please tell me this book is on your radar.
⠀
💋 xoxo,
Kat

Last night was a celebration for the launch of “The Curse of Hester Gardens” by Tamika Thompson in conversation with Angela Dalton author of “To Boldly Go”. This event was hosted by Sistah Scifi and Chapter 510 & the Dept. of Make / Believe in Oakland, CA!

In spite of the rain it was a great turnout and I think the drizzle added to the ambiance of this event, especially because the book is social horror. I was super excited to run into some old and new friends and simply be in the room! It was so good to see you Alisha @alishasreallife , Isis, Angela, and Tamika! My tiny human was attentively listening to everything and kicking with every applause! by @booksenvogue
