I’ve seen people do this on Booksta and figured I’d finally show my face and vibe to the community. If you’re into fantasy books, nature, and/or beer, you’re in the right place! 🧝‍♀️

I’m a 32-year-old graduate student in the Pacific Northwest who rediscovered my book obsession a couple of years ago. I have an educational background in creative writing and marine biology, and I’m working to combine my experiences in communications and wildlife conservation to help influence marine policy. 🐋

I love animals, being in and around the sea, and challenging myself to learn and grow. I prefer wild places with an ample dose of rainfall and often daydream about living in Scotland or Ireland. In my free time (when I’m not working, in class, or doing schoolwork), you might find me at a pub writing my fantasy book or at home on the couch reading and being an introvert.

My taste in literature is not elite. I’m a gentle critic and appreciate everything from the classics to narrative journalism to a tropey enemies-to-lovers romantasy book.

Let’s be friends. 🤎

Finished City of Crooked Vows by Rowan Mackay! I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I’m a day late on this, but it’s now available to read (and free on Kindle Unlimited).

This was a fun and thrilling read, full of twists and surprises, and it was my first gaslamp fantasy! I love a moody setting, so I enjoyed the imagery of rain, cobbled streets, and canals. It’s very Scottish-inspired with Gaelic words, whiskey, and kilts. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The FMC, Aly, is a morally gray baddie who’s stuck in a manipulative relationship with a crime lord (TW: abuse and violence) and I felt that the author did a great job of expressing her battle between a desire for freedom and the feelings of fear and entrapment. She makes a deal with a cop, Calum, to evade jail for a theft and help him solve a murder mystery. They fall in love, and messy would be an understatement, which is what makes this read so fun. To be honest Calum was not my favorite MMC, but that’s a personal opinion…I guess I’m used to fae warriors. 😂 He experiences a lot of personal growth, though, which I appreciated, so he grew on me. His witty and snarky sister Sorcha is one of my favorites. The story ends on a massive cliffhanger so I requested to be on an email alert list for book 2.

Thank you so much to Rowan Mackay, for the chance to be an ARC reader for your wonderful book! by @booksnpints

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!!!! *Mild* spoilers in this review of The Ballad of Falling Dragons by @sarah.a.parker.author.
- I lost count of how many times I cried.
- We already knew Kaan Vaegor is a top tier MMC but this just solidified it.
- Sarah E. Parker sure knows how to write a compelling villain (I’ll keep the name quiet in case you haven’t read 🤫). In this book you learn more of his backstory and chosen path. He allows himself to be defined by his traumatic past and desire for revenge, as opposed to other characters who choose love despite their pain. He’s complex, creepy, and utterly terrifying, and I appreciate when a writer doesn’t just create a generic “bad guy.”
- Raeve’s growth is insane. Proud of my girl for finally accepting the love she deserves. ❤️
- The ending? Unhinged. I need to talk about it. DM me if you do, too. 😂 by @booksnpints

February and March reads! I’m trying to maintain my goal of two books per month, but as a busy grad student I will give myself grace if it doesn’t happen each month. I’ve been going through my TBR in no particular order (with the exception of Wuthering Heights since the film was released in February). It’s been a diverse array of vibes these past two months, from Victorian gothic, to whimsical humor, to royal palace drama, to sailing the Ever Seas. ❤️ by @booksnpints

Wuthering Heights: a classic for obvious reasons! Every time you turn the page, the characters become more unhinged. It’s essentially toxic Victorian reality tv in the form of a novel. Thanks for the chaos, Emily. by @booksnpints

Technically I started a couple of these in December, but we’ll count it toward January. Considering how swamped I’ve been with grad school I’m actually really shocked I read as much as I did!
Brimstone was a fun read with a great cliffhanger. 🔥
The Knight and the Moth was mesmerizing and gothic. 🖤
The Everlasting was…mind-altering, awe-inspiring, and devastating in the best way. 🗡️ by @booksnpints

One of the best books I’ve read over the past year ❤️ a beautifully written gothic romantasy with a swoon-worthy MMC and the most endearing, comedic gargoyle 🥹 The sequel can’t come soon enough! Paired with a delicious @drinkhiyo because I sure need a break from all that holiday booze. #theknightandthemoth #booksandbeverages by @booksnpints
