Last of the Greek myth posts I PROMISE. 🙏

Read this memoir from Daniel Mendelsohn who has done a very recent translation of the Odyssey. This is about the time his late father asked to sit in on one of his modules teaching Homer at university and the way it changed his relationship with his students and the text itself.

It is written very well and I felt I got a deeper insight to the literary study of Greek classics, and also the bond between a father and son.

Highly recommend if you want a campus themed memoir 📚

I had a Greek mythology summer and became a bit obsessed with the Trojan war so I read the Iliad along with a few modern retellings and I really enjoyed it! Apart from having to read Patroclus get violently murdered and Achilles having a complete menty b three times in a row it was nice to delve into some literature I don’t really read much. 🇬🇷

Had to get the Emily Wilson translation to match my copy of the Odyssey and I loved it. Highly recommend this one as I found it accessible despite long waning passages of men being murdered 👍

Thank you Dead Ink for sending me this amazing Brazilian novel that was incredibly moving. 🇧🇷

This book gives a voice to figures of Brazilian history that have been forgotten to time in the face of Western colonisation. Two children are taken by German scientists back to Germany and later die there, unnamed and with next to nothing known about who they were or their story.

But the novel demands they are remembered as the narrator stares at the images of the children that are widespread in Brazil. It delicately and beautifully explores the impact of colonialism with amazing writing and imagery.

This was a really impactful book and the cover is stunnnnn 🫶🏻 by @booksnpunks

The Mulai by Munir Hachemi (translated by Julia Sanches) 🤍👽

This really needed more plot, and even maybe a little horror. I understand why it doesn’t - the novel is reminiscent of Borges in its investigation of language and information, and the structure which builds in time but leaves out enough to keep us wondering. But the book really suffers from this influence as there is nothing else to drive it forward. The novelty of the science fiction element only takes you so far, and without a sense of eeriness or cosmic horror that I know Hachemi would be so good at, it falls quite flat.

Hachemi has masterfully built a world of the Mulai which is endlessly fascinating to the archeologist and main scientists of the novel, but wanes early on for the reader. I adored the etymology and felt as though if this was spliced with a storyline that was building tension it would have been absolutely incredible.

Leaving this book feeling slightly disappointed but appreciating Hachemi’s literary influences and enjoying the book still for what it is.

Excited to see him talk about this at a book event in September 🫶🏻

Also side note does anyone else struggle to keep their Fitzcarraldo copies even the slightest bit clean 🤪 by @booksnpunks

Women In Translation month starting off the way it should with Claudia Piñeiro 😌

Although this hasn’t been my favourite of hers I still really enjoyed it. It follows the points of few of the family and friends of a girl who was found dismembered and burned in Argentina.

I adored the writing and the way the story unfolded but found that thematically it left me feeling quite confused. I go more in depth about this on my goodreads review.

It’s impossible to not love a Piñeiro book and I’m excited for my Elena Knows reread this month 🙌
