On a remote Scottish island, Ivar, the sole occupant, leads a life of quiet isolation until the day he finds a man unconscious on the beach below the cliffs. The newcomer is John Ferguson, an impoverished church minister sent to evict Ivar and turn the island into grazing land for sheep. Unaware of the stranger’s intentions, Ivar takes him into his home, and in spite of the two men having no common language, a fragile bond begins to form between them. Meanwhile, on the mainland, John’s wife, Mary, anxiously awaits news of his mission. Against the rugged backdrop of this faraway spot beyond Shetland, Carys Davies’s intimate drama unfolds with tension and tenderness: a touching and crystalline study of ordinary people buffeted by history and a powerful exploration of the distances and connections between us. Perfectly structured and surprising at every turn, Clear is a marvel of storytelling, an exquisite short novel by a master of the form. My holiday hours are coming to an end as well as, apparently, the sun! It has been really nice to take some time to myself during the quiet that is Cathays in August. I have been reading a lot! From September we will be open Tuesday to Saturday. Until we are able to hire someone (hopefully in the future) this should be the last time the opening hours change! Apart from holidays. Our November book club pick is These Blazing Suns by Nincemon Fallé, translated by Tina Kover! Text reads: 26/11/26 18:00 28/11/26 10:00 These Blazing Suns by Nincemon Fallé, translated by Tina Kover About the book: A resonant coming-of-age novel, and a story of intergenerational struggle and societal change Iro left his village to continue his studies in Abidjan. With his friends, Thierry, Malick, and Yeo, they form a happy, resourceful group, doing odd jobs around the neighbourhood. Of all of them, Iro is the most determined and ambitious. But when his father dies everything is turned upside down, as he realises how little he knew about his life, his dreams, and his losses. Iro’s certainties collapse, and new, more complex truths emerge that will allow Iro and his friends to chart their path and find reconciliation and peace for themselves and their families. A novel that questions the heritage of fathers, the ambition of sons, the divide between the villages and their laws and the freedoms and loneliness of the cities, Falle’s debut is the story of a young man who rises, emancipates himself, and finds his truth. Every other month we run a book club focusing on translated fiction. The months in between we run a general book club. For this we will have a mixture of fiction and non fiction. These are drop in sessions so you don’t have to commit to coming to more than one. It is free to attend but we do ask that you register your attendance on our website as there is limited space. We will be offering 10% of the book club books, you can order online or pick up the book in person. All the information, book orders and ticket sign ups are on our website. by @bookspacecardiff

Event highlight! Really excited to welcome Clare Clark to Book Space Cardiff in November to talk about her new book Adder Stone! About the book: A haunting story of a Welsh Valley’s drowning and the family forever changed by it. It is 1963 and in north Wales the Jones family are being forcibly ejected from the land they have farmed for generations. Their valley is to be drowned, turned into a reservoir for the people of Liverpool. While her husband Dai is grief-stricken, Olwen Jones privately sees it as a blessing, an unforeseen chance to escape the narrow confines of the valley. But for her teenage son Emyr, Liverpool’s careless arrogance is proof that Wales will never be free to decide its own future until, like Ireland, it breaks the shackles of English imperialism. Based on true events, Adder Stone is an exploration of personal identity and the possibilities and limits of love. How far will we go for our child or for our country? Who are we when we lose the places and the people that define us? And how much, in the end, is it possible to forgive? October is Black History Month! We stock books by Black authors all year round of course but this is a great reason to intentionally support Black voices. Here is a stack of some of what we have here. I've chosen mostly non fiction specific to the UK but have included some fiction from further afield. Including These Blazing Suns from Côte D'Ivoire which is our book club pick in November 📚 We had a fantastic event recently with Dean Atta and I am super excited to read this. About the book: BIG MAN follows the life of Big, a middle-aged, Black British gay man who lives a gentle life with his boyfriend, Little, in their home in East London. Big and Little enjoy evenings out and group holidays with friends, as much as practising yoga together at home, and running side by side along the Hackney canals. Big came of age in the club scene under the watchful eye of Mother, an African American trans woman who made a home and a name for herself in London, her house a refuge for wayward queer youth like Big. When he finds out Mother is releasing a memoir, the two reconnect after decades of distance, and Big finds himself having to confront a long-repressed assault that opens old – and new – wounds. A tender, daring novel full of gentle humour, BIG MAN explores themes of identity, aging, sex, family, and trauma, turning a lens on what it means to age as a queer person, while being a double-edged love letter to the people and places that make us. One of my faves that I read last year, now in paperback! About the book: A searing, exquisite novel by the bestselling and award-winning author of Americanah and We Should All Be Feminists – the story of four women and their loves, longings and desires. Chiamaka is a Nigerian travel writer living in America. Alone in the midst of the pandemic, she recalls her past lovers and grapples with her choices and regrets. Zikora, her best friend, has been successful at everything until – betrayed and brokenhearted – she must turn to the person she thought she needed least. Chiamaka’s bold, outspoken cousin Omelogor is a financial powerhouse in Nigeria who begins to question how well she knows herself. And Kadiatou, Chiamaka’s hous by @bookspacecardiff
I wanted to add my shop's voice to the many other indies talking about this. These are the two Sally Rooney's we have left here and once they are gone they're gone seeing as she won't see a penny of any sold here. Next time I am abroad I will be finding an English language bookshop to get a copy of Intermezzo which is the only Rooney I haven't got to yet. I am in full support of her decision alongside Faber. As soon as her books become available here again we will have them back in stock. It is terrible that there are laws that prevent an author donating their income wherever they see fit. In the meantime, we still have books about Palestine and by Palestinians in the shop and we always will. Reading is political 💚📚🇵🇸 by @bookspacecardiff
Event highlight! Super excited that we will have Carole Hailey back the day before publication (!!) of The Falling 💚 Join us to hear all about this brilliant new book! About the book: Cassie had an unconventional childhood, growing up with a father who spent all of his time preparing for the apocalypse. Instead of going to school, she had an eccentric curriculum at the kitchen table with her mum, and instead of going out to play, she either snuck off to see her beloved grandparents or went to the family safe space, a garage that had been sealed off and stocked with tinned food and emergency batteries. Now middle-aged and living alone, Cassie continues the rhythms of preparing for the worst, even though her dad failed to prepare for the slow-motion tragedy that became their family. But when an asteroid is located in the solar system, the chance of impact in northern Europe climbing every day, the worst finally seems to be confirmed. Cassie’s strange dad might just turn out to have been her salvation… Text reads: The Falling In conversation with Carole Hailey Date: 4/11/26 Time 18:30 (doors at 18:15) Place: 26a Crwys Road, CF24 4NL Tickets on our website by @bookspacecardiff
