I’ve be so unmotivated on here recently, stalking and doomscrolling. I want to be involved and engaged but life and this world don’t always agree.
I spent a lovely afternoon out in the sun, by the water with a great friend and then came home and did absolutely nothing.

And I’ve been wanting to do something bookstagrammy and when I just now saw @sometimes_i_read_books do this using @ktlee.writes template, it didn’t look like too much effort.

So here is my #MidYearBookCelebrationTag.

Best book could have been any number of books, choosing The Trees means I could use the others elsewhere, and the banter between the 2 MC’s was perfectionšŸ‘ŒšŸ¾

I cried throughout The Sisters of Serendib. Every single page. Even the happy hopeful ones. My goodness Ayesha.

Eliza’s characters in Salt and Skin are imperfectly perfect and I wanted to hug them all.

The children’s version of The Sunbird is a beautiful gentle way to tell a difficult but necessary story.

I picked up Duck a l’Orange on a whim and just enjoyed the lovely story.

Yumna can do no wrong. Period.

And I am so excited to read The Burn and But I won’t Miss Me, both sound so good šŸ™ŒšŸ¾

What books have stood out for you so far this year?
Have I encouraged you into picking up anything yet?

I will preface this by saying that the moderator of this wonderful event, Dr Sherene Idriss, is my brilliant, lovely and incredibly clever sister in law, who I learn from every single day and adore and respect as a person in her own right.

I’ve had the privilege of hearing Randa’s wisdom many times and yet each time she still manages to make me walk away feeling even more inspired, motivated and of course with a lot more knowledge.

Understandably, most of the discussion was around Randa’s newest book Discipline, a story that mirrored her own life, after it was published, because ā€˜art couldn’t keep up with the rapidly changing reality’.

And it was lovely to hear more about a well curated selection of books from Randa’s multi award winning body of work including The Very Best Doughnut, a middle grade book in the Our Stories series. As Yumna stated, mentioning the awards is important, the 2 cent opinion of a certain premier is not.

It’s so hard being in this space right now, but incredibly kind publishers like UQP still send me the books they know I want and need and Discipline is one of those books. It’s not a hard read as such, it is very readable but as Randa said it will trigger many Arab and Muslim people in the media and academia spaces.

With thanks to Yumna Kassab the curator of the Parramatta Literary Salon series, supported by @aceparramatta and @yamanefayed
How lucky am I that I get to call Yumna a friend and spend time with such clever people and minds.

And a shout out to all the wonderful people I’ve met through Ace and PHIVE, through the absolute legend that is @alissar_burramatta, through book clubs @sambecky and my sis in law’s beautiful friends who always make me feel welcome in their impressive girl gang.

Discipline - by the incomparable Dr @randaafattah

ā€˜The irony is that Discipline talks powerfully, exactly about this moment’….I’m paraphrasing slightly from Dr Chelsea Watego’s story earlier today. I won’t tag her so she’s not bombarded with all the notifications.

Every May, on the anniversary of the 1948 Nakba, Randa educates us all about that catastrophe, with such grace and dignity, when her words make us fall apart. Yet she is steadfast. Even more so in the last few years.
So whatever date is swirling around in your head, the only one that matters in this context is May 1948.
It has been 78 years of an ongoing genocide.

I’m so mad right now.
I’m mad at the world.
This fascist, McCarthyist, imperialist world.

I’m mad at everything that Randa has been put through. And yet, at every attempt at being silenced, excluded and dehumanised, she comes out with grace and dignity.
Fierce and emphatic grace and dignity.

I’m mad at all of you.
At how most of you consistently platform only white writers, share non bookish things when it suits, be ā€˜political’ when it affects people that look like you or it is the ā€˜on trend’ political stance ie anti tr&mp….but then have the audacity to feign empathy or cry ignorance.
I don’t need your empathy, I need you to do better, or at the very least question why you follow me.

But mostly I’m mad at myself.
I’m mad that it took this newest racist attack on Arab, Muslim and Palestinian identity, to post this book on my grid. To give it the space and recognition it deserves.
Recognition that only a handful of you who are not BIPOC have given to non white authors in recent memory.
A handful. Out of 2000.

To those of you who are in my DM’s and get it. I see all your messages. I’m just too mad right now to respond in any meaningful way
I’m pistified. by @booksweread

🌟AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT - SHANKARI CHANDRAN🌟

Look at all my pretties šŸ˜

I have been sitting on this post for a while because I wanted my 300th post to be a special one. And you can’t get more special than my friend and brilliant writer Shankari. If you’re here for reviews, sorry. This will just be me rambling on about how much I adore Shankari, her books and my journey finding her and them.

I have read (devoured) and absolutely loved all of Shankari’s books, my favourite being Song of the Sun God.
Maybe because it was my first.
Maybe because it’s epic and brilliant.
Maybe I’m just a fangirl.

The first time I met Shankari was the most random meeting. I had just discovered Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens when I bumped into Shankari at the 2022 SWF and we chatted about a session with Maxine Beneba Clarke and Omar bin Musa. Even then, I was star struck and had the loveheart eyes as I promptly rambled (IYKYK)

Fast forward a few months to some missing book mail, and then Ultimo surprising me with the book that will crack my all time fave list, a list that has been the same for over a decade.

That book was Song of the Sun God.
Stupidly, I did not read it straight away and when I finally did, I was in absolute awe and berated myself for letting it sit unread on my shelf for months.

Chai Time took a little longer to get into but when
I did, I raced through that too. And that’s when I started hassling Shankari for more labour šŸ™ˆ

Before long (and because I hassled her obviously) Shankari was back with fire and empathy with Safe Haven, which I devoured in a matter of days and wished I’d spent more time with it.

Was it too soon to slide back into Shankari’s DMs to ask for another story? Probably. Did I do it anyway? Of course I did, I have no shame here.

With every Shankari book, I tell myself to slow down, but again I failed to do that with Unfinished Business. It was too propulsive to linger on, I just needed to know what happened!

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the final (and sold out!) Western Terrace Series program produced by @phive.ps extraordinaire @kafeaspoume.
Animating the Arab Archive in Burramatta, curated by the effervescent @alissar_burramatta, was an ode to Arab culture, theatre and the arts. And an important exercise in ensuring that our stories, our culture, our history are not erased. That we, as a people, are not erased. No matter how hard the world tries to erase us.
It was a joy to be in a room full of like minded people with great Arab food and the best of friends.
Thank you Alissar, and thank you Eleni, for being a huge part of the Arts and Literature landscape that Burramatta has become, a drive that’s always worth it. by @booksweread

Lifeline book fair powered by @booktopiabooks

The sun graced us with its presence today and after haphazardly throwing multiple loads of washing outside, I braved the chaos that is a lifeline book fair.

Now I physically only grabbed a third of this haul myself, but tag teaming means friends look out for each other so I ended up with more than I originally came away with. Swipe to see my mini kids haul.

Shout out to the individual who, upon leaving with his purchases, announced to everyone that a genocide is still happening and to join the pro Palestinian march tomorrow. He also acknowledged my tote bag and asked where he could get one from, so I sent him your way @readerswritersagainstgenocide.

Because if you support lifeline, I think that means you support all humanity?

My bookstagram tour stop for @nenganniemenulis debut Middle Grade goodness My Harimau King.

I adored this beautiful adventure into the rich West Javanese culture.

A story with family at its core, identity, friendship and a colourful cast of mythical creatures from Indonesian mythology.

We follow 13yo Sumaiyah and her friends as she wonders where she is from and where she belongs, while trying to save her family’s lineage.

I loved the language, the food and the beautiful characters and their relationships.

With dialogue and banter matching the time, place and age of the characters, it was very easy to read and will appeal perfectly to its target audience (and their parents!) I love that the story embraces language like it’s no big deal and infuses it with Aussie slang, just like it sounds in Western Sydney.

Annie deserves all the support for her beautiful book to echo the support she continuously gives to the YA and MG community.

My Harimau King is out in the world so go get a copy! I will definitely be adding it to my gift giving rotation.

With thanks to Annie and @melbyrose.publishing for an e-arc of the book.

Our friend Lily is defying doctors and is still fighting strong. Today we come together as a community to wish her a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! šŸŽšŸŽ‰

If you’d like to show your #loveforlily please join us in posting a stack of thrillers (Lily’s favourite genre) or a book stack spelling her name.

I’ve decided on this stack of thrillers of which I’ve read a few and keen to read the rest.

I’ve been going through Lily’s feed today, adding her faves to my tbr, and then went through my posts looking for her comments. She is always supportive and encouraging and kind.

I hope you feel the love today Lily.
Today and everyday, you are in our prayers, hearts and minds šŸ™šŸ½šŸ’š by @booksweread

I think @bookshelfadventurer and I are the luckiest readers in Australia right now because we both have a copy of @bexmana Aotearoa edition of Kataraina.

But I am the most lucky, because my beautiful friend Jess is the reason I have this edition in my hands. She even sent me this very cool library bag that she made herself!

Words can’t express how happy I am right now and how eternally grateful I am to Jess and I just need to finish my AueĢ„ reread so I can get stuck in to Kataraina šŸ™ŒšŸ¾ by @booksweread
