We’re so proud to share our new short film Stories That Connect Us, based on real conversations with children in adoption, foster care or kinship care.

We were able to capture some beautiful moments between families, showing just how powerful sharing books can be.

📢 NEW: Our #ReadingRights report with Waterstones #ChildrensLaureate @frank_cottrellboyce is out now!

It shares five focus areas that will turn the tide on reading inequality and unveils plans for our City of Stories pilot.

And it calls on national and local leaders in early years, health, education and culture to come together and make reading a part of daily life for every child in the first seven years of life.

What a story time we had yesterday - with none other than Dame Julia Donaldson, Axel Scheffler, and the Gruffalo! 💫

It was a joy to join children from @guinealanenursery at Bath Central Library for this very special event, as Dame Julia read us Gruffalo Granny and Axel drew our favourite characters.

Plus, the children were each given their own Gruffalo books to take home afterwards 📚

The event was part of our partnership with @macmillankidsuk - they are generously donating 40,000 Gruffalo books and exclusive activity packs which will be gifted to families to keep through libraries alongside our #Bookstart Storytime programme.

Reading aligns strongly with the vision of the DfE's new Enrichment Framework, which emphasises the importance of children’s wider experiences in supporting learning and development.

1 - Why reading is a vital ingredient in enrichment provision
2 - The DfE’s 2026 Enrichment Framework recognises the value of enrichment for children’s development, wellbeing and future skills.
3 - Enrichment encompasses a wide range of opportunities offered in school beyond the core curriculum. These may be ‘co-curricular’ activities (linked to the curriculum) or ‘extra-curricular’ activities that develop additional skills, knowledge and interests.
4 - The DfE’s new Enrichment Framework provides non-statutory guidance for schools in England to support them to plan, strengthen and review their enrichment offer.
5 - A key indicator of a successful enrichment offer is that it enables children to access a range of activities across the following categories: nature, outdoors and adventure; sport and physical activities and developing wider life and future skills.
6 - Reading can help schools meet enrichment expectations across multiple areas. For example, while closely linked to the Framework’s arts and culture category, it also supports civic engagement by building critical thinking, or nature and adventure by sparking curiosity and imagination.
7 - There are lots of ways to bring reading into your school’s enrichment offer. These might be centred around explicit reading activities, like book clubs, or incorporated into wider activities such as child-led groups and projects.

As BookTrust's Reading Rights Ambassador, @frank_cottrellboyce often speaks about the importance of reading from the earliest days in a child's life.

Because right from birth, reading can give children a whole range of benefits that last a lifetime.

We're grateful for all the work Frank has done as part of the Reading Rights campaign to make reading a universal part of childhood, not an invisible privilege.

Today is his birthday, and we've got the perfect quote of his to share: "the early years are when the cake is baked, everything else after that is just icing and candles."

We're asking children in Years 3-8 to tell us who they would most like to share a story with (and how they'd like to share it).

You could win:
