In Episode 27 of the Classic Chronicle:

Book Discussed: The Picture of Dorian Gray
Author: Oscar Wilde

If you’re familiar with Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, I have another interesting bit for you. Many Victorian critics dismissed The Picture of Dorian Gray calling it a feeble attempt to mimic Stevenson’s masterpiece.

Furthermore, the book was used by prosecutors as evidence of indecency against Wilde during his 1895 trials. Wilde was convicted and sentenced to two years’ hard labour, the maximum penalty, and jailed from 1895 to 1897. On the day of his release, he caught the overnight steamer to France, never to return to Britain or Ireland. By 25 November 1900, Wilde had developed meningitis, then called “cerebral meningitis” which it is believed ultimately led to his death.

You know how sometimes it is very difficult to talk about the art without mentioning its artist. It stands true with Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray. Some remember this work for setting the cornerstone of aestheticism, some for the Gothic elements and some for the Queer literature. What do you best remember it for, tell me in the comments below.

I am very grateful to @cuppa_classics and @hope.s_literary_life for sending me my second Oscar Wilde. And now I am a big fan of the Cappuccino Classics.

Literary Term: Anglophile

An Anglophile is a person who greatly admires or loves England, its culture, its people, or its language.

Another renown Anglophile was Motilal Nehru, the father of Jawaharlal Nehru and a highly successful lawyer, embraced a wealthy western lifestyle. He imported his clothes from Britain, drove imported cars, and ran his household in Allahabad strictly according to elite British social reforms.

In E26 of the Classic Chronicles:-

Book: Madame Bovary
Author: Gustave Flaubert

Interesting fact: Elif Shafak explores the creation and world of Madame Bovary in her novel In One Brief Moment All Eternity. Rather than a strict or traditional scene-by-scene adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s classic, the book functions as a luminous, feminist reimagining of Flaubert’s life and his most iconic creation.

If you have read either of the books, do let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
