First of all I finally figured out how to make this Reel so we thank the Lord for small victories. ANYWAY. The bathroom between Alex’s bedroom and the guest room had not been touched (other than paint) since I don’t even know when. We know the people who built this house in 1974 had 4 girls, and as best we could tell, the cabinetry was bright blue and the wallpaper was yellow. My guess is someone replaced the countertop in the 80s - and maybe the cabinet hardware, too.

We kept putting off re-doing the bathroom because there was never a good time when Alex was in junior high and high school, and when he was in college, we opted to redo the kitchen. But finally, back in the spring, I sat down with my beloved friend Grant - who is such a gifted interior designer - and I told him I had three requests: 1) lots of color 2) keep the tub but no shower curtain and 3) really good light fixtures. He found the tile, and then he found the wallpaper (I LOVE IT SO MUCH), and then he said, hey, let’s paint the ceiling orange. 😊

This bathroom is TINY - and it has two doors (one to A’s room, one to the guest room), so space is tight. The vertical tile around the tub - and ditching the crown molding - changed everything. The room feels so much taller now, and the glass shower doors really helped to open up the space.

I’ll put some of the details in a highlight in case anyone is curious. We are thrilled with the new bathroom, and we’re especially carried away with how well it fits our house. A 70’s Ranch isn’t for everybody, but it’s for us for sure. ❤️

Also, I MADE A REEL. 😂 by @boomama205

Yesterday I had plans to meet my friends Matthew, Hannah, and Sara at Ladybird, and right before I left the house, I thought, how long have we been having our Ladybird talks? So I looked back in my camera roll, and turns out that yesterday was one day shy of two years of Ladybird-ing. It all started because Matthew - who used to be one of my students - and I found ourselves at seemingly opposite ends of the political spectrum, and we wanted to try to understand each other. So Matthew, his wife Hannah, and I met at Ladybird a few months before the 2024 election, and we’ve met at least once a month ever since.

In case you’re wondering, I have never gotten mad at Matthew as we’ve hashed it all out, but I did get real sad a couple of times during some infuriating current events. 😊 There was also a time when Matthew felt like his lifelong friend Sara (also a former student) and I sort of backed him in a corner, and through that I learned a whole lesson about being willing to yield (James 3:17). That’s not to over spiritualize it, by the way. That’s just to say that when you commit to honest conversations with people you love, you’re gonna learn some things about your faith, about yourself, and about each other. It gets harder to miss your blind spots.

So much has changed over the last two years. Matthew and Hannah have added another baby to their family. Sara got married. They have all made big career moves. I got lowlights (clearly monumental). Some of us have changed our minds about a few things, and some of us have changed our minds about a lot. Those aren’t my stories to tell, necessarily. But as the lone 50-something in a group of 30-somethings, I will just never get over the gift of friendship with these sweet people. I’m more convinced than I’ve ever been that as we’re all trying to figure out how to navigate life and relationships in these hyper-polarized streets, we’re gonna need big doses of curiosity and vulnerability to help us make a way through.

So all that to say: I’m so thankful for our two years of Ladybird-ing. Our talks haven’t just been helpful; they’ve been healing. They’ve strengthened my spirit. Here’s to many more. ❤️ taken in Birmingham, Alabama by @boomama205

We’ve loved @melanieshankle and @boomama205 for years. We’ve had each of them on the podcast individually. But getting the two of them together? That was something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.

The result was exactly what we’d hoped for: lots of laughter, honest stories, grace, and the kind of conversation that makes you feel like you’re sitting around the table with friends.

If the back-to-school season has you carrying a little more than usual, consider this your permission to take a break. Pour a cup of coffee, go for a walk, fold a load of laundry—whatever you’re doing, let these two remind you not to take yourself quite so seriously and to keep leaning into the grace of God.

Trust us...you’re going to love this one. 💛 by @boomama205

2026 SEC Media Days for sure gave us college football insight - but it gave us some fashion insight as well.

I’ve loved Mississippi State my whole life, so I don’t say this lightly: this year’s Mississippi State baseball season was - for me, at least - a particular kind of magic. There were ups and downs for sure, but from the very first game, something about this year’s team just felt hopeful. Unified. FUN. Full of promise. On top of that, the characteristics that State people hold dear - resilience, leadership, determination, grit, joy - have been on full display. It has been an absolute blast watching the 2026 Bulldogs play.

As for the Super Regional in Athens - it made me so happy to be in the company of that many people wearing maroon and white. Our team didn’t win, but we saw two incredible baseball games, and Tracey, Catherine, and I had ourselves a time. We met at State when we were freshmen in college, and all these years later, Bulldog sports are still a tie that binds (plus a whole lot of personal history, of course - but Bulldog sports for sure). I’ll never forget sitting in a crowd of over 12,000 at a Tuesday night game against USM, Milewsky’s walkoff HR in the rain, Jacob Parker’s grand slam against LSU, dancing with EK on the loft balcony for a full ninety minutes before and after that grand slam, and Tracey looking at me and saying “baby angel” whenever Bryce Chance walked up to the plate in Athens (that is because he is a treasure).

So. Congratulations to the Georgia Bulldogs. And thank you, Mississippi State Bulldogs. You really are a gift that keeps on giving. It’s been true all of my life, and that’s a mighty big win. Hail State. ❤️🐶⚾️ by @boomama205

Yesterday morning I dropped off @melanieshankle at the Birmingham airport, and she said, “Well, we lived laughed loved.” WE CERTAINLY DID. We started with the Birmingham live show (BOBBY SIMS, everybody) and then had a ball at our day-after party at our beloved @shopgusmayer @gusmayershoes. I think every live show is special for different reasons, and this one meant so much to me on a personal / relational level that I’ll think about it for a long time. ❤️ I am so crazy about every family represented on the stage at the live show - mine, Mel’s, Retha’s, Cole and Katherine’s - and then getting to see our podcast listeners ENJOY EACH OTHER - that’s a full heart situation for me.

Mel and I headed to Mississippi after Gus, and I don’t even know to explain the magic of Starkville this past weekend…the magic of @msstate and @hailstatebb and being in town at the same time as so many college friends. I told Mel yesterday that my part of Big Boo is built on the foundation of friendship that my college friends have given me. Even though we weren’t all in Starkville this past weekend, I could not stop thinking about every last one of them. I will be forever grateful for how they have embraced and loved Mel. It brings me so much joy.

Last night @daph_c_shan and I went to see the Indigo Girls here in Birmingham - 35 years after we saw them perform for the first time in Jackson, Mississippi. I was low-down, dead-dog tired - and I am so hoarse from all the baseball screaming - but we left their show inspired and comforted and encouraged. It was the perfect way to cap off five (maybe six?) really special days. All of these people and places mean the absolute world to me - what a gift to love and be loved by them. ❤️

p.s. I would like to sleep now. 🥴😂❤️ taken in Dudy Noble Field by @boomama205

I have a tendency to build a plane when I’m flying it. And even then, I’m hyper-aware that logistics aren’t my gift (a calendar hates to see me coming). Given all of that, I wasn’t the *strongest* candidate for planning a grown-up field trip to @legacysites in Montgomery. I bet I called the @legacymuseum eight different times - just trying to understand how the shuttles worked and the best way to get tickets handled and how to do the boat experience with a group. Thankfully, the details worked out, all because of the Legacy Museum guest relations team and the incredible staff at the STUNNING @elevationhotel. Their leadership inspired me over and over. They’re excellent at what they do.

Then there’s the part that I could have never planned: the people who joined @lauraeseay (our brilliant facilitator) and me in Montgomery showed up so humble and curious and willing to be vulnerable with a group of strangers from all over the country. And about midway through our Thursday night dinner, the sweetest thing happened: we started to realize that we weren’t strangers anymore. ❤️

One of the best parts of my life is that the people in my life have such a diverse range of interests. So many different things that make their hearts beat a little faster. But every once in a while, it’s a gift to sit in the company of people who share the same questions and concerns, who want to better understand the same topic, and who deeply care about the same things. Community happens quickly in those kinds of spaces. Conversations get meaningful fast. Pretense goes right out the window.

Now I’m back home in Birmingham. Grown-up Field Trip #1 is officially a memory. But it’s a great memory. And now that we’ve kinda / sorta started to figure out how to build this particular plane - well, we’ll for sure fly it again. ❤️ taken in Legacy Sites by @boomama205

Happy 23rd Alex! We love you so much and are so excited for all that’s ahead. Here’s to a year that’s full of lots of joy and laughs and squash casserole and Mississippi State victories. (As you know, that last thing can be tricky, but we persist in hope.) 😊❤️ You’re our favorite! by @boomama205

Last senior supper and first freshman supper - almost exactly four years apart. Some have graduated, some have transferred, and some couldn’t make it because they are grown-ups now and have real responsibilities. 😊 Start to finish, they have all been a joy. So happy to spend time with Alex and his buddies last night! ❤️ by @boomama205

So I asked @ahudbooman if he would meet me at @highdive.bham tonight because Alex is a little bit of a foodie - loves trying new things - and he also loves live music. Our friend @chefjamesneale - who we met several years ago at Helen - is the chef at High Dive (it opened back in January), and I have been so excited to see what he’s creating in this new spot.

I WAS NOT READY. Everything we tried was outstanding. Field pea hummus? Yes, please. Deviled eggs? 10/10 and unlike any deviled eggs I’ve tried before. Pork katsu sandwich? Unbelievable (I legitimately thought Alex was gonna run a lap around the restaurant - it was that good). I tried the pimento cheese sandwich, which was unexpectedly peppery and absolutely perfect. This is the best bar food you’ve ever eaten (the word “elevated” doesn’t do it justice), and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in Birmingham. There’s an incredible DJ playing music that adds to your meal - doesn’t distract from a thing - and right after we finished dessert (okay black sesame bread pudding 👏👏👏), the live jazz started. I WAS BESIDE MYSELF.

I can’t wait to go back, and if you’re in Birmingham, you should go, too. Perfect for a girls’ night, a date night, or a night when you tell a college-aged kid that you’ll buy their dinner. The outdoor space is going to be a dream this spring, but on this particular Thursday night, the indoor space was dreamy as can be. Also: the service was fantastic.

Congratulations, James!! You are building something really beautiful - and it’s a blast to see your creativity in action. We had ourselves a ball. ❤️ taken in High Dive HiFi Lounge by @boomama205
