At the heart of the Rawkus Soundbombing maxi singles series is an exceptional line-up of MCs who helped define the sound, attitude, and creative independence of late-‘90s New York underground Hip-Hop. The series captures the forefront of a movement that put lyrical skill, originality, and artistic freedom first. Leading the charge are Mos Def and Talib Kweli, whose intelligence, versatility, and unmistakable chemistry became synonymous with the Rawkus sound. Alongside them, Company Flow, led by El-P, brought an experimental, uncompromising edge to underground rap, while Pharoahe Monch delivered his unpredictable, high-energy style and razor-sharp lyricism. The wider collective showcases an equally diverse range of talent, including Shabaam Sahdeeq, Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, The High & Mighty and Eminem who already appeared on Rawkus’s 12-inch single “5 Star Generals” with Shabaam Sahdeeq in 1998. Each artist contributes a distinct voice to the Soundbombing identity. What makes the line-up special is the sense of community behind it. Rather than following a single formula, the series celebrates a whole spectrum of underground Hip-Hop — different flows, perspectives, personalities, and approaches to the craft, united by a shared commitment to authentic expression. That collective spirit is echoed in the five-cover subway-car concept. Just as every section of the train contributes to one continuous image, every MC brings a different element to the Rawkus table. Each maxi single stands on its own, but together they represent something bigger: a snapshot of a scene in motion, driven by lyricism and the unmistakable energy of New York City. Five covers. Five maxi singles. One complete train of thought. Each sleeve is a piece of the New York underground, but line all five up and the whole Rawkus subway car comes together — a moving monument to the MCs, the music, and the movement that made this label legendary.

Some rappers chase velocity, some complexity. Starker chases gravity. That’s why I keep coming back. Not because he says more. Because he says less. Cuts language to the bone. Leaves silence doing half the work. Fragments. Street philosophy. Dry humor. Weariness. Hunger. He’s one of these rappers whose restraint feels louder than excess. Summit Shootout only reinforces that. From the first seconds, Zoomo establishes the weather. Not just beats. Atmosphere. Soul samples dissolving into static. Drums that never bully the mix. Everything breathes. Everything lingers and Starker knows exactly how to exist inside that space. Calm. Surgical. Unbothered. His flow remains unmistakable. Staccato. Little bursts instead of long runs. Thoughts arriving like flashes through fog. Every line carrying weight because it refuses ornament. No desperate punchline every four bars. No forced profundity. Hustle without mythology. Reflection without sentimentality. That’s the magic. Starker can make the smallest image feel monumental. A passing detail. A glance. A routine exchange. Suddenly carrying emotional residue far beyond its size. Zoomo understands this instinct completely. His beats leave room for echoes. Room for memory. The soul samples are emotional architecture. They soften the edges without dulling them. They create landscapes where Starker’s detached delivery somehow feels deeply human. Cold voice. Warm backdrop. There’s remarkable chemistry here. Not the chemistry of contrast. The chemistry of mutual restraint. Neither artist overplays their hand. Neither rushes toward a climax. Starker remains one of rap’s most distinctive stylists. @zoomoguy remains one of the most emotionally intuitive producers. Together they deepen what already made them compelling. That’s harder. And ultimately more lasting. This is music built for long walks. Late trains. Empty streets. The hours when clarity arrives uninvited. That’s where Summit Shootout lives. And that’s exactly where @ghostnacekillah has always sounded most at home.

When @nas and @damienmarley1 came together, it wasn’t simply a rapper from Queens meeting a reggae artist from Jamaica. It felt like two branches of the same ancient tree finding each other after generations of separation. Hip-hop and reggae may have developed in different places, under different circumstances, but both were born from communities that understood struggle, displacement, poverty, resistance, spirituality, and the need to turn pain into something meaningful. That is what makes Distant Relatives feel bigger than a collaboration. It feels like a homecoming. The title says almost everything. The album constantly returns to the idea that humanity has forgotten its own family tree. We divide ourselves into tribes, nations, religions, races, and classes, then forget that beneath these identities is a shared human experience. Tribes at War captures this contradiction beautifully—the tragedy is not simply that people fight, but that they have forgotten they are related. What gives the album its deepest weight is its relationship with ancestry. Africa is not treated merely as a geographical place, but as memory, inheritance, and spiritual origin. Songs like Africa Must Wake Up feel like calls to consciousness: remember where you came from, understand what was taken, but also remember what survived. The album refuses to reduce history to suffering. There is pain here, but there is also dignity, resilience, faith, and an almost sacred insistence that people are greater than the circumstances imposed upon them. The record isn’t perfect, and it doesn’t need to be. Its messages can sometimes be direct, but its ambition is sincere. It isn’t trying to provide neat answers to enormous questions about history, identity, faith, and human suffering. Instead, it keeps those questions alive while it sounds almost ancestral—not nostalgic, because nostalgia wants to return to the past, while Distant Relatives wants to understand the past well enough to change the future.

I’ve searched for this vinyl for quite a while, so finally getting my hands on a copy (thanks @bsii_vinyl ) felt like finding a missing piece of that whole Umbrella Collective puzzle. This was one of the earliest albums carrying the “The Umbrella” stamp. Released in 2020, 3AM in Brooklyn also comes from an interesting period in Rob Deniro’s story. Deniro was one of the early OG figures around The Umbrella collective, co-founded by Pro Dillinger and Snotty. Some of that early Umbrella circle make appearances here: @josiahthegift @diamond__dallas @prodillinger @creasywwg as well as @jamil_honesty . So while this isn’t an “all Umbrella” posse album — and the guest list reaches well beyond the collective — the record sits firmly in that same underground ecosystem that was taking shape around The Umbrella. And that context matters. @robdenir0_bhmg drums are dusty and hard, the samples have that worn-out character you want from underground rap, and the loops tend to carry a darker, almost cinematic weight. There’s plenty of atmosphere, but Deniro doesn’t bury the MC underneath layers of production. He builds these grimy little environments and lets the rappers walk around inside them. It isn’t just another underground rap LP; it documents a crew, a producer and a particular strain of gritty hip-hop that is not packaged for wider consumption. 3AM in Brooklyn is exactly the kind of record I’m always looking out for: rough around the edges, heavy on atmosphere, packed with hungry MCs and driven by production that understands the beauty of keeping things grimy. A proper late-night underground rap record — and one I’m very glad I finally managed to track down.

MIKE makes music that seems to exist somewhere between poetry, diary and séance. His records are deeply personal without ever feeling entirely confessional, because the things he reveals are constantly being transformed into symbols. Grief becomes texture. Childhood becomes a fragment of soul music. Anxiety becomes a crooked drum loop. The past does not return in MIKE’s music as a clear recollection. It returns distorted, degraded, partially erased — which is perhaps much closer to the way memory actually works. Burning Desire is therefore not so much an album about desire as it is an album made from the condition of desiring. The mask on the cover of Burning Desire: a face that has been replaced by something older, stranger, less human and more ceremonial. Before a single sound has played, the mask has already suggested transformation: the shedding of an ordinary identity, the assumption of another form, the passage from the personal into the mythological. And then @mikelikesrap begins to speak.
MIKE’s music is intimate, but it is not small. It is private, but it constantly reaches toward something universal. Perhaps this is what the mask is telling us. The mask doesn’t hide the self so much as reveal that the self is already multiple. There is the person, the artist, the memory, the performer, the child, the survivor, the friend, the mourner, the ambitious or the frightened figure. There is the human being beneath the mythology and the mythology that inevitably grows around the human being. The personal becomes symbolic; the symbolic becomes musical; the musical becomes mythological. The boundaries between reality and imagination become porous. This is where the album becomes strangely mystical. Not mystical because it offers answers. Quite the opposite. It is mystical because it accepts that some experiences cannot be reduced to explanations. Grief cannot always be explained. Memory cannot always be explained. Desire cannot always be explained. MIKE’s great achievement is that he does not try to explain the reality. He simply makes a sound for it.

There is something wonderfully disarming about the title of Vel The Wonder’s album. At first glance, the title suggests glamour, money and status: «Trophy wife» is an inherently loaded phrase. It reduces a woman to her symbolic value: beauty and status and a trophy is something you display. Vel turns that logic inside out. Released in 2020 and produced entirely by @chasemooremusic , Trophy Wife is a heavy boom-bap showcase for Vel’s dense writing and commanding presence, but its most interesting idea is the tension between its title and its cover that shows Vel surrounded by an almost absurd quantity of trophies and awards. The obvious reading is that she is the trophy. The trophies behind her represent conventional markers of achievement: awards, victories, recognition, measurement of success. Vel places herself literally in the middle of that apparatus of status. But throughout the album, the central subject is not passive beauty. It is authorship, skill, independence, money, ambition, artistic identity and the ability to out-rap the ones standing opposite her. Her identity comes through her voice, her rhymes and her confidence - and that she is also a graffiti artist triples for me her credibility... The cover hides her mouth while the record is built around what comes out of it. That makes the opening track particularly interesting. “Uma” combined with “Samurai” is hard not to associate with Thurman’s Bride, a woman who looks like a conventional bride but is also a highly trained warrior. Her femininity and her power exist simultaneously. That is a fitting introduction to Trophy Wife. A trophy is an object of representation, here the trophy becomes a warrior. That is perhaps the central irony of this album cover: the woman, @vel_nine , who appears to be the most decorative object in the room is actually the only thing in it that cannot be put on a shelf. The cover says, look at her. The album answers, listen to her. And once she starts rapping, the trophies stop being the most important things in the room.

There was a time when you could tell what kind of hip-hop fan somebody was by the records they reached for. Not the ones everybody knew from the radio, but the 12-inches buried deeper in the crates. For those of us who came up on ’80s and ’90s underground rap, @dilatedpeoples were never just another rap group. They represented a whole understanding of the culture: the MC, the DJ, the producer, the cipher, the breakbeat, and the independent hustle. Work The Angles had already established the concept. Rework The Angles took that foundation and opened it up to a wider circle of underground voices. The result feels less like a commercial remix and more like a cipher pressed onto wax. And that distinction matters. Because back then, a remix was not automatically an inferior version of the original. It could be a new entry point into a record, a different way of hearing the same idea, another weapon for the DJ, or a chance for a new MC to step into the circle and prove his worth. That is exactly what makes this record so compelling. A.G. brings the Bronx, Defari and Xzibit bring different shades of Los Angeles, while Dilated Peoples represent their own independent California identity, built around the relationship between the MCs and DJ Babu. The remix becomes a meeting point between different schools of thought. Hip-hop as a living conversation. Those things do not expire. That is why Rework The Angles still works beyond nostalgia. It reminds us of a time when technique, personality, and chemistry mattered more than chasing a formula. For the heads who came up on vinyl and mixtapes this is more than a remix. It is a snapshot of an underground that understood the importance of connection: New York and L.A., the MC and the DJ, the original and the rework. A record that respects the past without feeling trapped in it. Because the angle is never just the angle. It is how you approach the culture, the beat and the rhyme. If you came up on real ’90s underground rap, you already know. You work the angles. Then you press play.

Ekphrasis, in its classical and literary sense, refers to the vivid verbal description of a work of art, an attempt to make the unseen or visually apprehended present through language. It is the art of describing an image so precisely, so sensuously, and so imaginatively that the listener begins to perceive it without ever having physically encountered it. That idea provides a remarkably revealing framework for understanding this album. Because Ekphrasis is, above all, a work concerned with the relationship between what is said and what is implied, between the image and the object, between the visible surface and the concealed architecture beneath it. @rocmarci production is particularly important here. His beats possess the muted grandeur, dusty textures, and atmospheric restraint that have become central to his production aesthetic. The music often feels aged rather than merely “dark,” as though its surfaces have absorbed years of history. Samples appear less like decorative loops than recovered artifacts, carrying an almost archaeological quality. There is beauty in them, but it is a beauty marked by wear, distance, and decay. @bronzenazareth own production complements this approach while also revealing the individuality of his ear. Because he is responsible for both rapping and producing on part of the album, his contributions make the project feel more circular: the same artist is simultaneously creating the environment and inhabiting it. His beats giving the record another layer of continuity. The distinction between Marciano’s production and Bronze’s therefore becomes less a matter of competition than conversation. This gives Ekphrasis the feeling of two painters working in the same gallery, each using a somewhat different palette while sharing an understanding of composition. The album’s greatest achievement is that it does not hand you the painting. It gives you the canvas, the shadows, the fragments, the atmosphere—and leaves you to see the finished image yourself.

UNTITLED 007 sounds like somebody found a hard drive buried underneath a barbershop, plugged it into a Ouija board, and used it to produce a rap album. DeevoDaGenius does not seem particularly interested in the conventional duties of a producer. There are no reassuring handrails here. Beats appear, establish themselves as if they have important business to conduct, and then suddenly leave the building through a side door. A loop might start behaving normally before being bent into some quirky little shape that, somehow, makes more sense than the original. This is production with a suspicious relationship to straight lines. The genius of it is that UNTITLED 007 never sounds unfinished so much as deliberately under-explained. The beats have this wonderful quality of being simultaneously dusty and extraterrestrial. They sound excavated from somewhere, but nobody can agree where. A soul sample? A broken arcade machine? The inside of a toaster during a thunderstorm? @deevodagenius production frequently creates the sensation that the beat is happening behind the song rather than underneath it. And then there are the drums. The drums do not always arrive on time. They arrive when they feel like it. This is important. In lesser hands, that kind of rhythmic disobedience would simply sound sloppy. Here it becomes a kind of aesthetic principle. Deevo seems to understand that a beat can gain character by refusing to behave. The strange transitions, compressed textures, skeletal runtimes and left-field arrangements make the record feel tactile, almost physical. And that is perhaps what makes DeevoDaGenius such an interesting producer here: he doesn’t seem to treat the beat as a neutral surface for rappers. The beat is another character. Sometimes it’s drunk. Sometimes it’s armed. Sometimes it has disappeared entirely and left only a strange smell in the room. So bring gloves, this is extremely suspicious music with @bluehillbill617 @kiltheartist @teflonhoot @esteenack @elcaminosway amongst others.

For me, Give Us Our Daily Bread is not only one of @machacha.cph best production works, but one of the finest producer-driven albums of the past few years: soulful, earworm-like samples, dusty textures, heavy drums and loops that feel as they come from some forgotten corner of musical memory and given a new life. These beats have their own emotional gravity. Give Us Our Daily Bread immediately recalls the language of prayer, the ancient request for daily sustenance, but in hip-hop “bread” also means money, livelihood, the means to survive. Give us enough to make it through another day. For some people, that is not metaphorical language. It is life. The record carries the perspective of people who exist at the edges of a society that often prefers to look away. Street life is not romanticized here as some glamorous mythology of hustlers and danger; it feels more like the consequence of environments where opportunity has been rationed, where poverty becomes inherited. @jamil_honesty doesn’t seem interested in making himself sound larger than life; instead, he makes the details of life larger. He raps like someone who understands that words are not decoration but evidence: a way of documenting where he comes from, what he has seen, and what he refuses to accept. On the surface, it is classic hip-hop: MCs cook, serve and devour bars. But beneath that language sits the most basic question of all: who gets to eat? Bread is an ordinary thing, yet access to it reveals the architecture of society. Who gets to eat? Who gets to live safely? Who gets to dream? Who gets to make mistakes without being destroyed by them? This record that makes you nod your head first, think afterwards, and then wonder why something as basic as bread ever had to become a political question in the first place.
Big respect to Martin from CC for staying true to what matters: keeping those faithful collaborations with MCs alive, while constantly giving us the chance to discover new voices along the way.
