My heart is with Hawaii as another hurricane looms. I just had an incredible week on the Big Island, first at an amazing @vrbo in Holualoa in the hills above Kona with a view of the ocean, the most beautiful flowers and meditative rain every night. We explored the beaches (were visited by a Monk seal and a sea turtle!), snorkeled with Manta Rays with @seaquesthawaii, had the best local brew from @huladaddycoffee, home cooked plate lunch from Kaaloa’s Super J’s and malasadas from @paradisebakeryhawaii. We immersed ourselves in history at Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and Hulihe‘e Palace, and shopped for totes and hats made from burlap coffee sacks at @crown.flower.studio and shell jewelry at @crystal_mermaid_creations. Then I got to stay at @konavillagerosewood which was next level, with a Mai Tai Trail (I tried 3 out of the 4 including at the historic Shipwreck Bar!), sunrise canoeing, petroglyphs, postcard sunsets and so much more. taken in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii by @boothmoore

The world is a lot less sparkly today. Farewell to a giant of costume design, fashion and entertainment, who amplified the personalities and style of so many icons from Cher to Miley Cyrus with his extraordinary craft, and always did it with a kind smile. I will miss you @bobmackie . I saw him for a final interview this spring for an upcoming project I am working on, and we took this photo in his incredible Palm Springs home. Condolences to @joemcfate3 and @jenellehamilton who worked so diligently to preserve his legacy. 💔 by @boothmoore

For the last 21 years in Los Angeles, Desiree Kohan’s boutique, Des Kohan, has been a destination for fashion discovery. And this September, she will do something she hasn’t felt compelled to do in years: go to New York Fashion Week.

Kohan has never made the seasonal circuit a priority, but a group of independent female designers she believes in — Ashlynn Park of Ashlyn, Maria McManus, and Alissa Zachary of High Sport — has become increasingly important to the mix at Des Kohan. Ashlyn and McManus will show in New York, while High Sport plans to present its collection digitally.

As e-commerce giants and department stores grow more cautious in buying, and dependent on fewer, bigger brands, specialty stores are becoming an increasingly important lifeline for independent designers — and are beginning to reshape fashion’s front row in the process.

I talked to Kohan about her “anti-trend” approach to buying which veers toward sculptural and conceptual but always through the lens of timeless wearability. Link in bio and story at @voguebusiness by @boothmoore

Rick Caruso’s Palisades Village reopened with much fanfare last weekend following $100 million in environmental remediation and renovations, reintroducing itself as a gathering place for a community still rebuilding and healing from last year’s fires.

The refreshed retail tenant list is a concentration of some of the most successful homegrown labels of the past two decades, making the shopping center a compelling destination for L.A. fashion and different visions of its trademark ease, as conceived by founders who are denim industry veterans, Hollywood stylists, digital influencers and more. I review the highlights, including debut stores from Leset and Xirena, the return of Jennifer Meyer and more. And Elyse Walker is back in the Palisades and better than ever. She still has the best selection of shoes in town.

Plus: Fashion-world fixtures the Elevator Boys are aiming to become the next digital content creators to cross over into mainstream scripted entertainment. And it’s time to book your table at Skywalker Grill. Link to my latest newsletter in bio. by @boothmoore

The first thing you notice in Mother’s flagship in Beverly Hills isn’t the denim, it’s the curves. Walls bend like Richard Serra sculptures. A conversation pit anchors the floor. Boudoir-style mirrored fitting rooms — inspired by Halston’s famed atelier — are designed to show your butt from every angle. For a Los Angeles brand built on obsessing over the way jeans flatter the form, the architecture feels almost autobiographical. The humor that’s at the heart of the contemporary brand is also front and center. In a glass vitrine at the entrance is a “Cabinet of Curiosities” that will change monthly alongside Mother’s cleverly named collections. The opening installation is of vintage telephones titled “Call Mother”, and labeled as “found telephones, synthetic lace, existential dread and approximately 41 missed calls”. Loved writing about the first @mother store for @voguebusiness including how important names and language are to the brand. I was also happy to be there when @lelarosebecker and @tkinc took their first tour! Link to story in bio. Go visit on Canon Drive. by @boothmoore
