The Low Tunnel is finally planted!!!!! 🙌🏻
This resource is a first for me in this garden space and I’m really anticipating everything I can grow and see how long I can grow it with my season. I really feel like fall gardens have been underutilized for a long time, and I am definitely one that has not taken advantage of the fall season to plant more food and harvest it longer. I’ve got to be honest, I typically am incredibly burnt out by the summer garden and don’t even want to think about growing anymore food. I literally need a break. Gardening is definitely one of those hobbies that can slowly just continue to take over your life because I literally start some of my crops from seed at the end of December. This year, though the weather has been so weird that my crops have been so weird and I haven’t really been overwhelmed by the summer harvest. In fact, I’m currently currently underwhelmed with the season harvest.

If you want to make some income from growing herbs in 2027, you don’t need acres to build a profitable herb business.

A 50′ × 50′ garden bed is 2,500 square feet. If each square foot eventually produces just $4 worth of finished herbal products, that’s $10,000 in potential gross sales.

Not guaranteed profit, just an example of how much earning potential can exist in a relatively small growing space.

But before this patch can produce anything, the grass and weeds have to go. That’s where investing in good production tools really matters.

We use a heavy-duty silage tarp from @bootstrapfarmer that blocks the light and smothers existing growth without tilling. Secured with sandbags, it prepares this ground now to be used for more growing space in the spring.

The cheapest tool isn’t always the least expensive if it tears, breaks down, or needs to be replaced before it finishes the job. Weeds and grass can then grow through them and put all of your hard work at risk of failing.

Invest in the infrastructure now to let the land create the return in 2027.

This millet cover crop seeded under shade cloth came up thicker and more even than the rows in full sun. Same seed, same bed, same day, in 100 degree August heat, using offcuts trimmed from two hoop houses.

4. **Lean into DIY builds** for low tunnels, trellises, and everyday infrastructure.

5. **Invest in quality gear** that lasts season after season so you aren't re-buying broken equipment every year.

If you wanted to grow your own food this fall and only had a few weeks left to get it going, here’s what I’d do:

• Sow cold tolerant plants now while there are still enough daylight hours for them to establish.

• Start more seeds than you think you’ll need. Colder temperatures, shorter days, and unpredictable weather mean some plants won’t make it.

• Choose plants that can handle some frost, like kale, collards, spinach, romaine, parsley, cilantro, and arugula. Some will even taste better after a frost!

• If you really want to stretch the season, consider a low tunnel with frost blanket to protect your plants as temperatures drop. That’s what we’re trying this year.

I’m starting our seeds in our @bootstrapfarmer 72 cell trays, then the seedlings will go beneath our Bootstrap Farmer low tunnel. We’re hoping to harvest cool season food into December. But mostly, we’re experimenting to see how long we can keep growing here in Zone 6.

Gardening is 60% experimenting and 40% learning from what you did wrong. Don’t wait until you know exactly what you’re doing. Start now and learn as you grow!
