Where do I even begin… in the last 8 years, over 4 years of my soccer career have been spent off the field. Three ACL tears and four knee surgeries later, I am beyond grateful for what I learned and the opportunity to play again from a place of love, gratitude, and joy.

Female soccer players are 2-8x more likely to tear their ACL and nearly 70% of ACL tears are non-contact. Strength training isn’t optional, it’s essential. As women sports continues to grow, so does the preparation required to handle the demands of the game. Investing in injury prevention and strength training can make all the difference.

To every athlete heading into the fall season, take care of yourself. Prioritize your lifts, stay consistent with your recovery, fuel your body, manage your stress, and remember that no game or training session is more important than your long-term physical and mental health, even if it feels like everything in that moment.

Playing as I step into my role as a coach has made me so excited to keep learning and give back to the game that has given me so much. I’m so thankful to the coaches, players, photographers, and everyone who made this season so memorable. This club is really something special and it has been a blessing to be a part of the soccer community again <3

As a female athlete, learning about hormones has been one of the most important parts of improving my performance. Having more acne, low energy, slow recoveries, and a decrease in performance are signs that your body is struggling. Looking back, a lot of those were signs that I was under-fueling and not recovering as well as I thought I was.

Some things I’ve been focusing on that have already made a huge difference:

1. Prioritizing protein, especially in the morning and throughout the day. More training means more energy demands, and that requires fuel. I love food, I just had to be more intentional about eating even when I was tired or not hungry.

2. Eating enough carbs, but also focusing on omega-3s, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, hydrating foods, and electrolytes to support recovery.

3. Cutting back on caffeine, NOT eliminating. I love energy drinks, but I’ve been swapping them for coffee and tea SOME days and paying more attention to my hydration. When I do have them, I try to not have them too late.

4. Active recovery. The boring stuff matters. Rehab, mobility work, walking, stretching, rolling out, and sauna sessions all help me feel better and recover faster than doing nothing at all.

5. Sardines. Random, I know. But they’re packed with omega-3s, protein, calcium, vitamin D, B12, and iron, nutrients many female athletes don’t get enough of and that play a huge role in energy, recovery, and performance.

As athletes, we spend so much time focusing on training harder. Sometimes the answer is actually recovering better and fueling more. Stay in tune with your body !! by @boovasquez

A reminder to:
• fuel your body properly
• focus on the quality of your foods rather than the quantity
• include stretching, activation, and mobility into your life if you want longevity
• pay attention to your cycle and your hormones and make adjustments to your bodies needs
• invest in a creatine supplement, it has so many benefits mentally and physically. You will not gain weight but you may notice water retention initially as you begin taking it.

Last few weeks I have been working on cutting out energy drinks with tea and coffee, eating more healthy fats and omega 3’s, being more mindful of getting sunlight and being outside, and also working out more intentionally by structuring my lifts around soccer trainings to include more activation and mobility to avoid overtraining and improve recovery. Small habits throughout the course of your day make a huge impact, really thankful for life lately. Physical health and wellbeing are a blessing and sometimes we can take it for granted. by @boovasquez
