An extensively migratory background shaped the artistic language of Mira Schendel. Born in Switzerland in 1919, Schendel escaped from Italy to Yugoslavia and eventually settled in Brazil, where her artistic palette irrevocably metamorphosed. ‘Schendel asks, ‘What is language, but what else can we do with language?’’ says curator and art historian Yuval Etgar (@yuvaletgar).

At London’s @luxembourg_co, Etgar joins Brazilian sculptor Anderson Borba (@borbaa) to trace the path of an artist whose rich life story embeds to the work she produced. ‘As a Brazilian, I can see her,’ he says. ‘I can imagine her in Brazil and fully forgetting that she came from anywhere else.’

There is distinctive multiplicity within Schendel’s paintings, drawings and sculptures: lightness, humour and simplicity as well as boldness, texture and conceptual depth. As Etgar puts it, ‘These very delicate and small expressions are each a universe.’

Anderson Borba’s solo show “Fugido” is on view at FDAG Barra Funda, in São Paulo, through this Saturday (Aug 1),

“I like to think that Borba’s sculptures have a life of their own: once upright, they travel their paths, murmuring their silent, aesthetic vocabularies. And as if that were not enough, this semantic wellspring overflows with a sensuality that insinuates itself through body and fashion – stemming from the artist’s early training,” — Bernardo José de Souza in the critical essay accompanying the exhibition.

Anderson Borba’s solo show “Fugido” is on view at FDAG Barra Funda, in São Paulo.

Borba’s sculptures evoke archaeological artifacts, digitally manipulated images, and the languages of modern abstraction while engaging with folk art and Afro-Brazilian spiritual traditions. The exhibition layout lends the works an occult and conspiratorial dimension, as if the figures had gathered in ceremony, parade, or secret assembly.

Anderson Borba’s new solo show “Fugido” opens tomorrow (June 10) at FDAG Barra Funda, from 6 to 9 pm.

“A parade of entities crosses the gallery diagonally. These are sculptural bodies made from fragments of organic, inorganic, and artificial matter – anthropomorphic beings whose hybrid nature evokes an indeterminate existential dimension, at once past, present, and future, as real as they are fictional. This procession of figures forged from wood, stone, bronze, clay, paper, and aluminum signals a physical form in constant mutation.” writes Bernardo José de Souza in the critical essay accompanying the exhibition.

“Fugido,” Anderson Borba’s new exhibition, opens on June 10 at FDAG Barra Funda, featuring sculptures, reliefs, and collages produced with organic, industrial, and found materials such as wood, stone, bronze, clay, paper, and aluminum.

Arranged in procession throughout the gallery, the works take the form of hybrid anthropomorphic bodies marked by an unstable physicality and references that move between ancestral forms and otherworldly imaginaries. Relating to one another as parts of a larger organism, the works activate an animistic potential through the interplay between material, gesture, and abstract presence.

“The Unearthed,” a solo exhibition by Anderson Borba is on view at Cample Line in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

The works seem to inhabit a heightened natural order of their own. Borba’s practice suggests an imagined cosmology that brings together references to European and Brazilian modernism with elements that resonate with self-taught artists from inner Brazil and ancestral belief systems.

Working primarily with locally sourced found wood—alongside cardboard, textile, plaster, and found images from books and magazines—Borba develops forms through carving, hollowing, scorching, pressing, painting, and gluing. The sculptures appear enigmatic and hybrid, at once animal, plant, humanoid, and otherworldly.

Anderson Borba presents “Black Faun” (2026), the artist’s first outdoor sculpture, in “The Storytellers,” a group show curated by Iwona Blazwick e Katie Fallen at Worcester College, Oxford.

The figure of the faun—poised between human and animal, body and instinct, and often bound to music—offers a useful lens for Borba’s piece, where bronze, wood, and stone converge into an “almost-body” composed of abstract fragments. Rather than coalescing into a stable figure, these volumes suggest a material and sensorial presence, while a form recalling a flute introduces the idea of breath and latent sound, as if the work were organized around an invisible, animating force.
