Details below 👇 @borisum Daubenhorn (K5/K6 – extremely difficult) is the longest and toughest via ferrata in Switzerland. The full route typically takes 5-8 hours and gains 1000 m of elevation.

So, I decided to do it twice in one day. Starting at 6am from Gemmi Pass it took me 3h47min to reach the top, then another 1 hour down, short lunch break and started another ascent at 11:10am, finishing it by 3:04pm (3h54min 2nd ascent) 🤙

Why? Excellent question 😅
Was is fun? Absolutely!!
Would I try 3 times? My legs would fall off 🙈

💡 Tip: Want to finish in under 4 hours? Take the first Gemmi Pass cable car (8:00) or stay overnight at the hut. Starting early helps you avoid crowds.

❗ Gear: Via ferrata set, helmet, gloves, sturdy shoes, plenty of water & snacks. Hiking poles are useful for the hiking down to Gemmi Pass.

⬆️ Route options
• Full route: 6–8 h climbing + 1–2 h descent (4 h climbing if you’re fit and start early).
• Halfway exit: ~2–3 h climbing + 1–2 h descent.

⬇️ Descent: From the 2’941 m summit, follow the hiking trail to Gemmi Pass, then hike or take the cable car back to Leukerbad

Details below👇 @borisum Brotmessergrat🇨🇭 (translates as “bread knife ridge”, also called Ruessiflue) delivers exactly what its name suggests - high-quality, grippy, and sharp climbing rock with spectacular views all around.

The ridge is located on the south side of Pilatus and offers yet another way to climb this beautiful peak. The climb itself takes a few hours for 500 m of ascent. However, getting there takes another 1000 m of ascent from Alpnachstad, which fortunately leads through a shady forest - something we appreciated a lot on a hot day.

Climbing difficulty is relatively low with UIAA II-III, but there are not a lot of bolts along the way. So I highly recommend bringing a few slings to place around trees and rocks for extra protection.

‼️ Important: This is not a hike but a low-grade ridge climb. If you go, please bring full climbing gear, including a 40 m rope and a bunch of slings (60–120 cm). Be prepared to use all your climbing equipment!

DM me if you need the GPX @borisum

Fruttstägä (K3–K4 moderate difficulty) is a short but surprisingly exposed Swiss via ferrata in🇨🇭Schächental, near the Chinzig Pass

Despite being only around 100 m high, the route packs quite a bit of excitement into its 45 minutes of climbing: slightly overhanging sections, two wobbly cable bridges, an exposed sideways traverse and a nearly vertical headwall. Some sections require using natural rock holds rather than relying entirely on metal steps

One of the highlights is a wooden bench attached to the vertical rock face, where you can sit down, let your legs dangle, enjoy the views and maybe have a very unrelaxing lunch break 😋

⬆️ Route details
• Difficulty: K3–K4 (moderately difficult)
• Via ferrata: ~100 m / 45 min
• Approach: ~45 min from Biel cable car station (1,626 m)
• Descent: ~45 min directly or longer via Chinzig Chulm
• Total duration: 2¼–4 hours
• Elevation gain/loss: 420–590 m, depending on the route

💡 Tip: You can extend the adventure with a scenic hike via Chinzig Chulm (2,073 m), Ober Frutt (2,138 m) and Lang Egg (2,106 m).

❗ Gear: Via ferrata set, helmet, gloves and sturdy shoes. The route is exposed and requires some arm strength, particularly on the slightly overhanging sections

Details below👇 @borisum 🇨🇭 Gross Walenstock via Wiss Tritt (T5+) is a long alpine loop above Bannalp combining exposed scrambling, several summits and a short ridge on the way to Klein Walenstock

The first half of the route from Bannalp up to the Cabane Philippe Morel is unusually well marked: I counted 20+ blue marks on Wiss Tritt alone while climbing this II+ grade section. Afterwards the navigation is based on topo/GPS but quite straight forward

My personal highlight was the short but very exciting ridge between Gross Walenstock and the junction to the north ridge of Rigidalstock - climbing it is optional but highly rewarding

The least enjoable part by far was the steep descent on super loose rocks in Gross Chälen after summiting Klein Walenstock. With another hiker above me constantly producing a stream of falling rocks, that felt as the most sketchy section of the whole hike

DM if you need a GPX (rough GPX also available on SAC)

👉 Route:
Start at Bannalp and climb via Wiss Tritt to Gross Walenstock (2572 m), traverse to Klein Walenstock and descend via Gross Chälen. Around 1330 m ascent / 6-8h total

🧗 Difficulty:
T5+ with scrambling up to UIAA II+. Wiss Tritt has steep exposed sections with bolts available for protection, followed by easier but mostly pathless terrain and an exposed ridge between the summits

‼️ Gear:
Helmet strongly recommended. A rope can be useful for the exposed sections, especially on Wiss Tritt. The descent through Gross Chälen is steep and loose

Details below👇 @borisum 🇨🇭 Par la Grande Arête (T5+) is a super fun and surprisingly wild ridge above Moutier in the Swiss Jura, combining exposed scrambling, nice views and most climbing options I have ever come across on a hike. Essentially every rock you see on the ridge can be either climbed or skipped depending on your preference, experience and equipment

And if you are lucky, you might see a viper sunbathing on the rocks 🐍

👉 Route:
Start at a parking lot 15 min walk away from Moutier and follow the Grande Arête ridge. Optionally you can continue towards Mont Raimeux - Jura’s highest peak with record-breaking 1301m elevation 😂

🧗 Difficulty:
T5+ with several climbing sections around UIAA II–III. The crux is an exposed slab around III, with a few bolts available for protection. A short III- downclimb can be rappelled (~5 m) if needed. Also, the Paroi des Pitons variant (shown in the video) adds an exposed ~10 m wall with metal pins

‼️ Gear:
Helmet strongly recommended; a short rope can be useful for protection or the rappel, especially if you mistakenly climb up a rock a degree too high and need to go down again - happens to the best of us 😬

Details below 👇 @borisum 🇨🇭Bergseeschijen (2815 m) & Gandschijen (2388m) traverse is a long and varied alpine tour above Göscheneralp with plenty of off-trail terrain, scrambling and some exposed sections

Starting from Göscheneralp, the route first follows the marked trail to Bergseehütte before heading north into the rocky basin below Bergseeschijen. The ascent follows the northern couloir through loose scree and several rocky steps with scrambling up to UIAA II, before traversing the easier east flank to the summit

From Bergseeschijen, the route descends along the edge of the east face, including a steep section equipped with fixed ropes, before continuing through large blockfields towards Gandschijen. The second summit is reached via another largely pathless ascent with several easy scrambling sections

Overall, a beautiful but fairly serious alpine traverse with lots of route finding, loose terrain and scrambling. This is definitely much more than a normal mountain hike!

DM if you need a GPX

Difficulty: T5+ / UIAA II
⚠️ Mostly unmarked / off-trail alpine terrain
⚠️ Good route-finding skills needed
✅ Fixed ropes on parts of the descent
🪖 Helmet recommended

Details below👇 @borisum🇨🇭Vorder Glärnisch (2327 m) via Knobelroute (T6 / UIAA II–IV) is an old-school alpine route straight up from Schwändi: steep grass, serious exposure and climbing that I personally wouldn’t call “alpine hiking” anymore

After the first ~800 vertical meters on a visible trail, the path suddenly disappears into an extremely exposed mix of grass and brittle rock, with only occasional animal tracks to follow. Finding the correct line required a detailed study of the topo and Hikr reports, and I spent quite some time beforehand creating a precise GPS track through a section that initially looks almost impassable

The crux involves climbing up to UIAA IV (partly with fixed rope) definitely not something you expect even on most T6 hikes. Overall, probably one of the sketchiest unprotected ascents I’ve done

The Knobelroute was first documented by Herr Knobel and published by the Swiss Alpine Club in 1928, making the route at least almost 100 years old

⚠️ I explicitly do not recommend this route to alpine hikers without solid climbing experience. This is not a normal hike and requires careful route planning and preparation

Gear: Helmet strongly recommended; rope depending on experience. Bolts are available at the crux

Conditions: Dry conditions only. The steep grass becomes extremely sketchy when wet

Details below 👇 @borisum🇨🇭 Plein Vide II (Full Void II) Charmey (K6) is among the toughest via ferratas in Switzerland. While not very long, it is definitely one of the most physical. Almost the entire route is overhanging, with very few opportunities to properly rest your arms. I was myself quite surprised by how brutal the route was 😅 One more note: while pretty much all via ferratas are free in Switzerland, this one has a small fee of 4 CHF to cover the maintenance cost (to be paid at the gondola station)

👉 Start: Take the gondola from Charmey to Vounetz. From the top station, it’s ~15 min hike to the start

❗️Gear: Standard via ferrata gear + helmet. A short tether is highly recommended for resting on the long overhanging sections. If you use it though the rating drops from K6 to K5 😉

⬆️ The Climb: 160 m elevation gain. Expect sustained overhangs, constant exposure and a serious biceps workout. Official total activity time: 2–4 h

⬇️ Descent: The via ferrata continues beyond the summit with a protected descent and a spectacular 66 m suspension bridge, followed by ~40 min back to the gondola

‼️ Important: K6 and extremely physical. Very good arm endurance and solid via ferrata experience are essential. Turning back is difficult once committed

Details below👇 @borisum🇨🇭Grand Muveran via Versant Sud (T5) is a beautiful alpine route via Cabane Rambert to the 3’051m summit with a chimney rated UIAA II. The route is very well marked

👉 Start:
For a day trip, take the chairlift to Jorasse and hike via Plan Salentse to Cabane Rambert: around 750 m ascent / 2.5 h to the hut. After that, you need another 500m /1-1.5h to reach the summit

🧗 Difficulty:
T5 with climbing up to UIAA II. There is also an alternative more advanced route rated AD, with 3c climbing from the Cabane Rambert - it is however not marked at all

‼️ Gear:
Helmet strongly recommended. Only attempt in dry, stable conditions and with solid experience in exposed alpine terrain

Details below👇 That T6 hike turned unexpectedly scary: I was looking for some nice scrambling and ended up downclimbing 20 meters unprotected on what felt like a UIAA III-IV almost vertical rock face full of wobbly rocks.

Several mistakes I made:

* I didn’t study the topo well enough
* I mistook old bolts for signs of the correct route
* I didn’t stop when the route started feeling too steep
* I should have taken my gloves off for climbing

What I did right:

* I didn’t try to traverse at the top but descended the same route I came up
* I took time to calm down before descending to avoid panicky hands
* I called out to nearby hikers so they would watch me climb down
* I tested every rock before trusting it with my weight

Learning the hard way.
