Last week we attended at @madfestlondon and caught the 'Not another disability inclusion chit chat' panel hosted by @domhyams @purplegoatagency , featuring Emily Heath of @rexona.ec , @cinejamographer of @youlookokaytome and Samantha Tatlow of @itv

So much brilliant advice from all when it comes to approaching Disability inclusion authentically. Here's what we took away:

✏️ Perceptions of Disability and Disabled people are still often outdated and ableist
✏️ Disabled people should be present and included in the entire process of a project/team
✏️ All stages of the process should be accessible to allow for that
✏️ Put your trust in the community you are trying to represent, be prepared to fail and be ok with not pleasing everyone
✏️ Acknowledge that there is still a long way to go and be willing to learn and keep learning
✏️ Question everything at every stage of the process - are you the person/brand to tell this story? If not, pass the mic
✏️ Be sure to consider diversity within Disability
✏️ Be open to doing things differently and don't be afraid to move timings and launches to ensure that the content and comms being produced are accessible to the people you are trying to reach

This week we met in person for a strategy session @tate to share updates, plan new workshops, brainstorm the future & generally put the world to rights. There was laughter, connection, love, support & black pudding & mustard crisps, which were surprisingly delicious.

Looking forward to showing you what we’ve got coming up soon.

As part of our sponsorship commitment to @womenbeyondthebox we are showcasing the ‘Trailblazers’ from this years selection. Follow along to discover Women forging new paths in their careers.
.
Posted @withregram • @womenbeyondthebox Trailblazers

The ten women named as this year's trailblazers are fantastic examples of how Neurodivergent people often excel at innovation.

Our trailblazers have all forged a new path in their field or shown the ability to find a creative solution to an entrenched issue. We hope that you will draw inspiration from their determination to change things and their ability to not just accept the status quo.

We are excited for you to meet them - so follow along as we showcase our 2023 Trailblazers over the next week and a half!

Image Description:[At the top, the word Trailblazer in capitals, and underneath in italics, noun and the phonetic spelling of the word. Below in the centre is a yellow box outlined in black on a white background with the words 'definition: the first person to do something or go somewhere, who shows that it is also possible for other people.']

We are a Small And Mighty sponsor of the ‘Top 50 Influential Neurodivergent Women list 2023’ by Women Beyond The Box. Link to sponsorship details for 2024 in bio.

One of the ways we are supporting the important work of founder @theemmacase is by sharing her reasons for launching the List, via an interview, which you can find on our latest blog. Link on linktree in bio.

‘’Back in 2019 the landscape was very different within the neurodivergent space, speaking from the perspective of a Black woman, it was clear that intersectionality was not part of the discussion.”
*
As part of our ongoing inclusion work at Born Equal we have noticed that there are many voices speaking, teaching, and training in the neurodivergent space, yet time and again we see the voices of Black Women either missing or not front and centre. We believe the future is one where Black Women are central and leading the conversation in and beyond neurodiversity. We celebrate the leadership of Emma and can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings for her and the wider community.

*We speak from a mindset of abundance, there is enough for everyone, there is no ‘and or’, there is room for collective liberation. For example, when Emma leads, she brings us all along. We all benefit. We are all interconnected.

(To further clarify the ‘benefits will be felt’ by those who have taken the time to unlearn and are active anti-racists)

We are proud and excited to announce that we are a ‘Small and Mighty’ sponsor of the ‘Top 50 Influential Neurodivergent Women list 2023’ by Women Beyond The Box.

Founder @theemmacase created the platform in 2019 to support Neurodivergent women by disrupting the space with ‘The List’, to globally showcase 50 Neurodivergent women within the workplace.

This month for our Born Equal blog we interviewed Emma, one of the questions we put to her was ‘What drove her to single handedly create and launch’ The List’?

‘It was crucial that whatever I created was impactful, beyond a vanity project and ultimately, would allow Neurodivergent women to feel connected and to have their career experiences validated.’

The List’ is not only groundbreaking in its intersectional representation of Neurodivergent women in the workplace, it acts as a resource and reference point for women navigating their own career path within work environments that were not designed with neuro inclusion in mind.

Are you ready to evolve your workplace culture and explore how you can be an ‘active’ accomplice/advocate in doing anti-racist work?

Today the 21st March is ‘End Racism Day’ an opportunity to reflect on how individually and professionally you are showing up in the world. We believe ending racism is an ongoing ‘active pursuit’ which goes beyond a ‘one day event’.

Why not join us for our workshop ‘How Language & Social Constructs Perpetuate Exclusive behaviours’ a 1 hour session to broaden your mindset.

In this session, Deborah, Nicola and Emma take you through a journey of understanding and self awareness in acknowledging the daily language, habits and reactions in play in society that are fuelled and perpetuated by social constructs and dynamics of power and privilege.

*Social constructs & how they inform our behaviours & thinking in the context of race
*A lived experience case study
*Oversimplification & questioning our everyday language
*Where society believes racism starts & ends vs the reality
*The cumulative effect of microaggressions
*Holding space for conflicting feelings
*Examples of accountable anti-racist behaviour

In last weeks Radical Question & Discovery Session hosted by Sulaiman R. Khan, FRSA [he/him/his/Disabled] on Disability Liberation (beyond diversity, inclusion, equality, equity and justice); we were asked to discuss; ‘How do we integrate Disability (and Disabled people) into a liberated world, without systemically ignoring or erasing our lived-experience, wisdom, richness, and Disability?’
Such a powerful question and part of a lifelong pursuit.

What stood out for me in this conversation was the simple act of saying ‘hello to a disabled person is where we can start our journey’ Sulaiman pointed out that this is often where erasing Disabled lived experience starts from. Surely everyone has an ‘hello’ in them? Much of the ableism faced in the world has grown from ignorance, and not knowing how to interact with Disabled people. A simple ‘hello’ is a great place to start as Sulaiman said.

The next session on the 10th October promises a rich insight into mental health and Disability. Join us to discover and learn from Sulaiman's lived experience and wisdom and listen/learn from fellow community members as to how we navigate our well being. We will be attending from the perspective of a carer for a Disabled child and a person with an invisible disability.
