🎧 Book Report: Dive Bar at the End of the Road By Kelley Armstrong 4 ⭐️ This was a surprise hit for me! This is described as a mix of Final Destination and Cabin at the End of the World but I think it’s more Cabin in the Woods. Either way, be still my millennial heart. Basically, a group of strangers get into an accident on a deserted road in the middle of the night and end up at a strange dive bar in the middle of nowhere and it becomes a thing of their nightmares. I won’t say any more than that, because trust that you’ll want as little info as possible heading into this one. What worked: * The fast pacing. This is a short story under 300 pages and 8 hour audiobook. I highly recommend the audio as it is a multicast narration and it moves very quickly with excellent narration led by Helen Laser, Sean Patrick Hopkins, and Shane Ghostkeeper. Easily a 1 day, 1 sitting read/listen. * The setting. It is creepy, isolated and atmospheric. Not jump scary but has all the tropes of a good cult horror movie. I would LOVE to see this made into an actual movie. * I really enjoyed the story and twists. It was familiar but still unique. What didn’t work: * Probably the abrupt ending. I would have liked more but I know a lot of horror books end similarly so it was fine. At least we get answers to the big questions! 📚 Report: Prey For Me by Allie Oleander 3 ⭐️ My goodness did I have high hopes for this one after that literal banging intro. I enjoyed the first book okay, it was spice heavy with almost no plot and this one has an idea of a plot but trips over itself by once again focusing on railing after railing and forgetting about the attempted storylines. I was begging for Margot and Caine’s story, their chemistry popped in the first book and somewhat fizzled in the second. Newly single Margot is house sitting Claire and Shane’s house and Caine moves back to town to open his own haunted house business. With perfect timing Margot’s ex husband, a televangelist reverend who was recently freed from prison is hunting Margot for revenge on past misdeeds. This was so promising… Not sure how it went so wrong. What worked: * Loved the intro, it was super hot. I really loved the idea of a haunted house attraction, the various themes of fear and fear kink exploration. * The first 30% of this book was a great set up and I was looking forward to a big showdown between Margot and her religious zealot ex husband. Easily headed in the 4 star range. * There was a dog. What didn’t work: * Everything after 50%. There were far too many spicy scenes and zero plot progression. This had so much potential and it was completely wasted. Easily fell to a 2 star ending. * This book tried to go into thriller territory but ended up super clunky and odd. * Margot was extremely frustrating, her personality was all over the place and she made some really dumb decisions. I didn’t buy into her falling for Caine. I honestly don’t think I will continue this series. I’m assuming Delaney will get her own book and not a spoiler, pure conjecture but I’m assuming it will look a lot like Butcher and Blackbird. Who knows. 🎧 Book Report: Lady X by Molly Fader 4.5 ⭐️ Lady X was everything I hoped it would be after being convinced to read it by my Baddie Book Babes. I love a book with feminine rage and while this isn’t over the top it is certainly real, cuts deep and is a stark reminder that women still have so much work to do when it comes to fighting the patriarchy and men behaving badly. This is a slow burn, dual timeline about a woman and her group of friends in the 70s fighting against misogynistic men during a time where women were not believed and the system did not support them after crimes and injustice against women. Then there is the present day timeline about her grand daughter who is dealing with similar but different ways men are the same, and her fight against a cheating husband with many secrets. I loved how many different themes this books tackles, particularly the women friendships, motherhood and found family. There are so many ways society fails women and this book made me feel so many emotions… anger, injustice, fear, heartache and hope. This is a must read for women who don’t feel like they make a difference but in reality, we can all learn to be a little like Lady X. I had both the audiobook and physical library book and I much preferred the audio. The narration by Helen Laser should not be missed. It is a powerful performance, that made me love this story even more. ⁉️ QOTD: What is something you’re looking forward to this week? Or your current read? 🎧 Book Report: Wildwood by Ashley Woo 3.75 ⭐️ I really enjoyed this debut! I also would not call this a horror book, yes it has some horror elements in it but I don’t think people who don’t typically read horror should be scared off by this book (both literally and figuratively). This read more like a general fiction mystery with elements of historical fiction and paranormal. Let me also be clear this is NOT scary. It has an amazingly eerie and atmospheric setting in a gothic house in the contemporary world. This is about Elinor, newly pregnant and recently let go from her job, she’s at a crossroads in life when she gets news her great uncle left his estate, a large manor house in rural Vermont to her. Elinor and her husband take the chance and move into the house, where she becomes consumed with finding out the history of the land, the secrets the wealthy elite neighbors and her family may have been keeping about the past. This is not your typical haunted house book, try as it may to come off as one. This one has some pretty cool tie-ins with witches and the Salem Witch trials of the past. I admit the story gets a little too convoluted towards the end and the reason I didn’t rate this higher is because the ending lost me a bit. I just can’t stress enough that I don’t think this is a horror book. There are more general fiction themes as it relates to domestic drama, generational trauma, small town communities who revere the rich and wealthy elite of their town that definitely overshadow the minor horror elements. Overall, I think it is a stellar debut that could appeal to the masses. The audiobook is also the way to go, I loved the narration by Natalie Naudus. She kept the slower parts of this book moving and interesting. I will definitely read whatever is next from Ashley Woo. QOTD: Are you as ready for Fall and cooler temps as me?! 📚 Report: Wicked Magic by Lindsay Lovise 4.5 ⭐️ This is book 3 in the Wicked Sisters trilogy and this is my favorite of the series. Ya’ll these two are hot hot hot. What is it about forbidden romance/opposites attract that create the best banter and tension?! Let me back up though… While this book can be read as a standalone I highly suggest reading the first 2 books first. This series centers around the Celeste sisters, who are wickeds, the supernatural beings who possess magic that creates destruction, the counter balance of witches, who have powers of “good”. This book is about Missy, the last Celeste sister and Atlantes, a pillar witch who needs her help in understanding a problem in the witch community. This book has a laundry list of the best tropes - enter fake dating, forced proximity, grumpy x sunshine, opposites attract and forbidden romance! It was so good and I loved every second of this book. It is also the spiciest of the series, which sometimes makes me cringe when it’s excessive but this was perfection. Read this series if you enjoy cozy magical books with witches and supernatural mystery. Each book brings a unique story, adorable sisterly bonds, dreamy mmcs, great side characters and excellent world building. I am so happy with how this series ended and bummed that it is over. Ranking of the series: * Wicked Magic (book 3) 4.5 ⭐️ * Perfectly Wicked (book one) 4 ⭐️ * Just a Little Wicked (book two) 3.5 ⭐️ I can’t thank Lindsay enough for my gifted digital galley in exchange for my honest review. 🎧 Book Report: Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe 4 ⭐️ If you loved Conform, Divergent, and Fourth Wing but wish the main characters were fully formed adults and ditch the dragons, then this book might be for you. It is a dystopian society about a corrupt leader and the rebels against them, plus of course the enemies to lovers. The world building and cast of characters are pretty great, I did need to see the photos in the book to fully understand the lay of the land and highly suggest you view those as well. Otherwise, I highly recommend the audio, it is a duet narration by Teddy Hamilton and Angela Pean and they sizzle together. The size is pretty daunting but trust it moves quickly and by the end you will be clamoring for the sequel to this duology (Python out March 2027). I almost wish I waited so I could binge the whole thing but I have no doubt I will not have issues remembering where this leaves off. The only reason I didn’t rate this 5 stars is because I struggled with some parts of the story, it didn’t feel as fresh as I’d hoped and honestly the enemies to lovers aspect was not super convincing to me. I can’t get into why without getting spoilery but these were minor complaints! I can’t wait to dive deeper into this story and some of the side characters (Greyson’s sister!!) were my favorite things about this book. Please be aware this is a pretty graphic book in its violence, spice and tension - check tigger warnings. ⁉️ QOTD: What is your favorite setting in a book? Could be a place, time period or genre? 📚Book Report: If Not You by Ellen O’Clover 4 ⭐️ I was so excited to get this approval from @berkleypub as I really enjoyed Heartbreak Hotel, mainly because it took place in Colorado but the story was super cute with the right mix of emotion and romance and this was no different. This is about Mattie, a 27 year old copywriter for an ad agency who is sent on a month long client pitch to win new business. The catch is she is up against a rival ad agency and long time copy writing nemesis, Campbell, who at every stage of their career has bested her. This is the best workplace rivals to lovers I’ve read in such a long time. I felt such a kinship with this book as I worked at an ad agency for a year and I spent 15 years on the client brand side and so much of this book brought me back to my time in marketing. The briefs, the Cannes Lions Festival callbacks, the copywriter/art director late night sessions… all of it. On the flip side I had a hard time believing a client would ask 2 agencies to spend a MONTH without breaks traveling and pitching. Maybe my brands weren’t bougie enough! I flew through the last 50% of this book in one sitting, I just loved the intense angst, the very real conflicting emotions, the super hot tension and the depth of these characters. I also fell in love with the setting, they travel to these ultra posh resorts in Aspen Colorado and Bodega Bay California. BUT I had major hang ups with Mattie, she was so annoying and stubborn and I just wanted to slap some sense into her. That’s my problem with reading books about 20 somethings, I just can’t relate. Even with my sometimes annoyance at these characters and some believability issues with the concept, I still loved this book. I loved the journey and ending. Ellen O’Clover has earned my autoread author title, I can’t wait for what’s next. ⁉️ QOTD: What is the fanciest hotel experience you’ve ever had and where was it? 🎧 Report: 50 True Stories That Will Scare You to Death by Sebastian Krahl 3.5 ⭐️ Like most children of the 80s, I grew up watching unsolved mysteries and scaring the daylights out of my young self and as a result am a true crime junkie as an adult. I was hoping this would fill that true crime bucket and while some of these stories worked and kept me deeply engrossed, there was a lot that fell short. I am not familiar with this author as I don’t do TikTok, but definitely get that he knows his stuff when it comes to obscure true crime. What worked: * I loved the variety of stories, you get supernatural, aliens, true crime (death, abductions and unsolved mysteries). * I really liked that stories were from all parts of the world, ones I would have never heard about before this book. * If you are new to true crime, this might actually be perfect for you. The details were sparse, so it isn’t overly graphic in the imagery of the storytelling. None of these are actually scary. * Quick read, I finished the audiobook in one day and one sitting. What didn’t work: * The narrator starts off pretty blasé, there was no intensity, personality or anything in the delivery. It does get better and perhaps it’s the writing that didn’t work. The stories are SO short that by the time they are told and you want to know more, it moves on. The supernatural stories, which I typically love were my least favorite. They were entirely too superficial and lacking details. In later chapters, you get actual quotes, more details and a semblance of emotion. * I felt like a voyeur of these stories in a bad way by the end. Nothing new was told, there wasn’t a point to it besides telling what happened. There was no insight or call to action and I felt bad about myself for taking any entertainment out of these horrific true stories. Overall, I enjoyed it - even if I felt slightly guilty for enjoying it in the end. Thank you to Source Audiobooks for the gifted alc in exchange for my honest opinion. Best of the Best: ✨ Wicked Magic by @lindsaylovise - book 3 in the Wicked Sisters trilogy and it was by FAR my favorite!! Ahhh, I am so lucky Lindsay gifted me an arc and I was able to read early. Out September 8th!! Read this series for all the cozy magical sister vibes! Perfect for you Practical Magic fans. ✨ Abby Offsides by Anna McCallie - Excellent book if you’re missing the world cup excitement. I was lucky enough to be invited to an amazing author chat with Anna and it made me love this sports romance even more. Great audio. Out now. ✨ Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe - If you loved Fourth Wing, Conform and Divergent but wished it was adults and not youths… pick this up! It is an excellent dystopian society with an amazing cast of characters. Be warned the ending will leave you wishing book two of this duology was already out.
