Thank you to the incredible orthodontic community for supporting my 18th “Chilly Dip” adventure at this year’s British Orthodontic Conference in sunny Brighton. The BOC vs MND Fancy Dress Chilly Dip on Friday 25th September was an opportunity to reflect on the “Joy of family and friends” and support the @mndassoc Association. Thank you to @angelaligner_uk_ie for sponsoring the fancy dress prize and to @brightonsurflifesavingclub for keeping everyone safe. Last but not least a huge thank you to @sam_miles_photography and @alexellis0 for their superb drone photography and video editing skills ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐#mndassociation #mnd #charity #orthodontist #brighton by @bosbraces

BOC 2026 Reflections: The strength of our community

After three packed days in Brighton, there is so much to reflect on — brilliant speakers, an impressive exhibition, a fantastic buzz throughout the Brighton Centre and a Friday night social that will take some beating.

But one of the moments that stayed with us most happened away from the lecture halls.

Friday night’s MND charity swim was a wonderful example of the strength of the orthodontic community. Seeing so many people come together to support it — orthodontists, colleagues, friends and trade partners — felt like a perfect snapshot of what makes this community so special.

BOC is, of course, about education: sharing clinical knowledge, hearing new perspectives, discovering innovation and discussing where orthodontics is heading next. But it is also about something much harder to replicate anywhere else: bringing people together.

The conversations in the corridors. The introductions that turn into collaborations. Catching up with people you may only see once or twice a year. Clinicians, academics, societies, industry partners and teams all sharing the same space — and, on Friday night, the same rather chilly stretch of Brighton sea.

BOC 2026 was a reminder that professional communities are built on far more than CPD and clinical excellence. They are built on relationships, generosity, shared experiences and people willing to show up for one another.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, supported from the beach and helped make the swim such a memorable moment for such an important cause: One of the moments from Brighton that will stay with us.

And while we’re still reflecting on everything BOC 2026 gave us, we’re already looking ahead to the next chapter.

Manchester 2027 — we’re coming for you. 🐝

🇬🇧 Every time I come to the UK, the same thing happens

People stop me in the street, ask for a picture, and some are convinced I started my career in Liverpool. Honestly? I understand the confusion.

But the real reason I was in Brighton was to speak at @bosbraces (The British Orthodontic Society 2026) on a topic I care deeply about : "Catch It Early: Aligner Treatment for Growing Patients."

Aligner treatment for children truly belongs in our therapeutic arsenal. Starting early allows us to :
✅ Prevent problems that would be harder to treat later
✅ Guide growth while it's still happening
✅ Create space for the permanent teeth
✅ Control the development of the dental arches
✅ Give children back their confidence from a very young age

And with innovations like 3D direct printing, the tools keep getting better. The future of orthodontics is exciting, and it starts early. @aligntechinc

Thank you to @bosbraces (The British Orthodontic Society 2026) for the invitation and to everyone who attended. 🇬🇧

A very special #bos British Orthodontic Conference with some very special old and new friends. #MND #orthodontics #invisalign #braces by @bosbraces

Pretty special couple of days at the British Orthodontic Conference with some very inspiring colleagues. So much to take away, but mostly grateful for the people who make these few days so memorable.

Here’s to many more. Thanks to everyone who made it possible. ❤️ by @bosbraces

#BOC2026 what a belter!! So much content, connection, compassion and community. This did not feel like a conference it felt like a holiday with friends. My belly hurts from laughing so hard, my feet ache from the dance floor and I have a mild case of whiplash from the rides. But you were all worth it. Taking on a task like this takes guts…THANK YOU @simon.watkinson.orthodontist for curating a wonderful conference and putting your trust in me to deliver on the social programme. To @sazglossop for being the best wing-woman and co-party planner a girl could wish for and @bosbraces for the insane support. How to top this next year is gonna be hard but we’re invested! by @bosbraces

@bosbraces Conference 2026. Very privileged to have been part of such a great conference which really highlighted the amazing community we have in orthodontics! An excellent lecture programme together with fantastic social events, as well as a fun run and a chilly dip to raise awareness of @mndassoc . Looking forward Manchester 2027 already! by @bosbraces

What if one conversation could help someone find hope to be here tomorrow?

Or help someone recognise that a person they care about is struggling — and encourage them to reach out.

Today, I’m going to share a little more of my own story.

At BOC Brighton 2026, I’ll be stepping onto the Main Stage to give perhaps the most personal lecture I have ever delivered:

Overcoming Adversity, Holding onto Hope & Finding Purpose.

This isn’t a lecture about having all the answers.

It’s a human conversation about adversity in my own life. About experiences that have shaped me. About holding onto hope when hope can feel difficult to find. And about discovering purpose through experiences we would never have chosen.

I’ll share how I found hope through three things that have become incredibly important to me:

Care. Connection. Compassion.

Because sharing lived experience matters.

Our stories can help someone feel less alone. They can challenge stigma and shame. They can give someone permission to speak.

And perhaps someone listening today will find a little more hope to keep going.

Or perhaps someone will think of a friend, colleague or loved one they are worried about — and decide to reach out.

To listen.

To stay alongside them.

To be the person who offers care, connection and compassion when it is needed most.

We may never know the difference one conversation makes.

But sometimes a conversation can change a life.
And sometimes it can help save one.

Join me for a human conversation.
