The ultimate beginner’s guide to surviving Bosnia & Herzegovina 🇧🇦❤️

From avoiding crazy roaming bills to understanding that coffee isn’t just a drink (it’s a 2-hour lifestyle), here’s what you actually need to know before landing:

📱 SIM & Data – Buy an eSIM or local prepaid SIM at the airport to avoid insane EU roaming charges.
📲 Essential Apps – Download Holland Taxi, Korpa & Traveling.com beforehand (Uber & Bolt don’t work here!).
💳 Money & ATMs – Cash is king! Always choose BAM/KM & pick MF Banka or Nova Banka for zero ATM fees.
🪙 Tipping – 10% in restaurants, round up for cafes & taxis.
🛡️ Safety – Low crime rates, drinking tap water is fine & stick to marked trails when hiking.
🗣️ Key Phrases – A simple “Izvinite” or “Hvala” opens doors.
☕ Daily Rhythm – Slow mornings, long coffee sessions & mountain springs (swipe to the end for the local lifestyle guide!).

What’s your #1 tip for someone visiting Bosnia for the first time? Drop it below! 👇

📌 Save this guide for your trip & share it with your travel partner!

Bosnian pita explained: burek, sirnica, zeljanica and krompiruša. What to eat in Bosnia and Herzegovina, how this Bosnian food classic is made under a sač, and the one naming mistake to avoid.

In Bosnia, only the meat one is burek. Together they’re all pita:

🥩 Burek: meat
🧀 Sirnica: cheese
🥬 Zeljanica: spinach
🥔 Krompiruša: potato

Or as they say: “Sve su pite pitice, a burek je pitac.” All pitas are little pitas, but burek is the big one. Many Bosnians will tell you a meal without meat barely counts as a meal 😄

🔥 Local tip: try one baked under a sač at least once.

Bosnia & Herzegovina is home to over 60,000 mysterious medieval tombstones called Stećci (a UNESCO World Heritage site), but NONE are as iconic as this one 🗿

Right on the square in front of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo stands this detailed 1 to 1 replica of the Zgošća Stećak.

🏰 3 Facts about Bosnia’s most famous stone:

1. Royal Origin: Discovered in Donja Zgošća (near Kakanj) before being moved to Sarajevo in 1913, experts believe this 14-ton stone was carved for a ruler of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom (likely Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić).

2. The Rare Castle: One side features a detailed carving of a medieval fortress, which is extremely rare for tombstones from this era.

3. The Location: Placed in front of Parliament in 2011 to represent centuries of Bosnian statehood and identity.

💡 Pro tip: Visit the nearby National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Zemaljski Muzej) to step into the garden and see the authentic 14th century original up close!

📲 SHARE this with someone visiting Sarajevo soon!

Rimski Most: Ottoman bridge built with Roman stones. Ilidža, Sarajevo.

Rimski Most crosses the Bosna river in Ilidža, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in 1530-1550 (Ottoman period) using stones salvaged from an earlier Roman bridge.

That Roman bridge originally connected Aquae Sulphurae, a spa town built around natural thermal springs starting in the 1st-2nd century CE. So the
location has been important for 1,800 years: Roman baths then, Ottoman bridge next, peaceful retreat now.

📍 Ilidža, Bosnia (Rimski most / Most na Plandištu)
🕦 30min from Sarajevo
🚗 Easy car access (free parking)
🍃 Combine with Vrelo Bosne (Bosna river spring) nearby

Free, open 24/7. Save this before your next trip to Bosnia.

Edin Dzeko (Edin Džeko), Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national team captain, plays his final match for the country today in Sarajevo, against Sweden. We are all Dzeko today, and Sarajevo proved it. From toddlers to market stalls, his shirt was everywhere, and a street artist on Ferhadija even sat down to sketch his farewell banner.

Dzeko grew up in Sarajevo during the siege. His first club after the war was Zeljeznicar, right here at home. From there he went on to play for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, Teplice, Wolfsburg, Manchester City, Roma, Inter Milan and Fenerbahce, becoming one of Bosnia’s most recognized names in the world. He has been our captain since 2014, over a decade carrying this country’s name with honor.

Thank you for everything, Edin. Bosnia & Herzegovina could not be more proud of you. Today, nothing but love and respect. VOLIMO TE 🫶

Bosnia and Herzegovina weather: Sarajevo and Mostar are only 130 km apart, but they have two different climates.

One small country, very different temperatures. Where you are matters as much as when you go. Day and night differ a lot too: some days it’s T-shirt weather in the afternoon and winter coat weather by evening. Pack smart. Swipe for what to expect each season, what to pack, and when to ski or swim.
