I’ve been wanting to communicate what I felt in Palestine since the day I left, but with what’s happening now I want to add my perspective for people who might not be informed about the situation. What I keep coming back to is the contradiction of it being both so much better and so much worse than what we’re shown from the outside. So much better in that once you make it past the checkpoints, there are beautiful and incredibly welcoming communities living peaceful lives in ways we have been made to believe are not possible. It’s so much worse in that the Israeli occupation is much more dehumanizing, brutal and imposing in person, even as someone who has been trying to be as aware as possible of Israels atrocities. One lie begets the other really, western media perpetuates the idea that there is that there is no “normalcy” that we need to free from the occupation, we’re lead to believe that all of Palestine is constant chaos and violence, and this is the lie that leads to an attitude of “well what can be done?” Or “it’s too complicated for me to ever form an opinion”. A brutal occupation against a largely peaceful populace is a much harder sell than what is portrayed as a necessary response to a pressure cooker of violent upheaval.

I entered Palestine through the Allenby bridge crossing which is generally only Palestinians, this was not my initial plan but in the end I’m glad I saw this tiny sliver of life under occupation. The treatment from Israeli soldiers was what I can only describe as a dehumanizing scorn, pushing people through metal detectors, closing the gates / stopping the lines for long periods with no information, hours upon hours of waiting. The contrast couldn't have been starker once I was through and was helped every step of my trip by incredibly gracious locals who helped me find the right buses, change money at the best rate, and get a quick fresh squeezed orange juice for the bus ride to Bethlehem. This flew in the face of every discussion I had had on the topic with Israelis. When I refused to play a party in Israel recently the DJ told me that basically I don't know shit and Palestinians & Arabs “Hate me & want me dead”. (Cont. below) by @bosqmusic

No Be Today, Kaleta and I’s first full length album together, is here. I have a lot to say about how we as artists are continuously discouraged from undertaking large scale slow moving artistic experiments and instead pushed to view our art as a commodity and release continuously and without attachment or expectation, hoping to be chosen by the alg0 riddims, but I hope this album says what I want to say by existing.
On the musical side, we were able to explore so many more different genres, feelings & moods on a full album than we’ve been able to on one off features in the past. Everything from our usual funk & disco to Juju, Highlife, Boogie, Soukous, Reggae, and the only straight up Afrobeat we’ve ever made together.
I’m honored to have been able to work so closely with such a brilliant and prolific songwriter and musician as Kaleta, who is such an integral part of West African music history. After probably 100+ guest mixes and appearances on other peoples radio shows and mix series, I’m finally starting my own.

I’ve been meaning to do this for years, but moving back to the USA and reuniting with my record collection has been a good impetus for finally making it happen. Bethlehem, Palestine based Radio Alhara will be the home and I’ll be live-streaming the one hour, freeform, genre agnostic sessions on youtube and some of the other socials if I don’t get hit with too many copyright issues. I’m looking forward to re-exploring my records along with y’all!

I rambled on my new Substack about the 10 year anniversary of The Tumbalá EP, originally released on Soul Clap Records way back when. I did some edits because in my old age I've realized songs don't need to all be 7 minutes to get the point across (some do though).
