🌿We’ve got huge news to share…🌿
.
Boss Morris are the inaugural recipients of the Ffern Folk Foundation grant!
.
This is a massive moment~not just for us but for folk arts more widely. The Ffern Folk Foundation has just launched an annual grant of up to £50,000 to support folk practitioners in Britain deepen & develop their work. We’re beyond honoured to be the first recipients.
.
Boss are 10 this year🎊 & this funding couldn’t have come at a better time. Until now, we’ve done everything without funding~powered by love for what we do & the people around us. This grant will help us root what we do properly & carry it into the future.
.
We’ll be sharing more soon about what we’ve got planned but for now, we really want to encourage others to apply! If you’re working in folk >> head to @ffern.co or www.ffern.co/folk-foundation to find out more (link in bio).

📣Something is stirring on the shoreline📣

𝒦𝐼𝒯 𝐼𝐼: 𝒜 𝒞𝑒𝓁𝑒𝒷𝓇𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃 𝑜𝒻 𝒞𝑜𝓃𝓉𝑒𝓂𝓅𝑜𝓇𝒶𝓇𝓎 𝐹𝑜𝓁𝓀 𝒞𝓁𝑜𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our next exhibition, KIT II, will run from Friday 31st July to Friday 7th August at the legendary @sidmouthfolkfestival in South Devon!

This is the second iteration of our KIT exhibit, bringing back some beloved relics alongside never-before-seen pieces.

KIT II is a living archive of garments and artifacts used for ritual, resistance, and reclamation. The show explores how the things we stitch, weave, and wear can express deep identity, belief, and cultural belonging in the modern day. It is an invitation to look closer at the fabric of our personal mythologies, acts of resistance, and collective unity.

This iteration features the extraordinary works of @boss.morris , @libby.bove.arts , @lucy_j_wright , @man.in.the.woods , @mayqueencrafts for @angelcakepie2 , @tamsin_wilson , the @bentwoodfest wardrobe by @theoclinkard , and @wessex_hag .

And that is not all… We will be hosting live talks, hands-on workshops, and all manner of events with @field.system friends throughout our week at Sidmouth, more details soon!

Friday 31st July – Friday 7th August at Dissenter of Sidmouth (The Old Dissenters Hall), All Saints Rd, High St Sidmouth United Kingdom.

Spaces for certain workshops will be limited, so keep your eyes peeled for times, locations, and how to join in. See Sidmouthfolk festival account for festival tickets.

@boss.morris had such a special day celebrating our wonderful friend & fellow dancer @lilycheethamartist at the weekend. Lily has made an incredible new quilt (slide 1) that’s now showing in ‘Home Improvements’ ~ a group show in the woods near Painswick curated by @rachelhowardart ..It was so great to do a few dances in the sizzly heat in honour of it opening.

Refugee Week Fundraiser @ Hill House 🌳

What an absolute treat to be sharing the glorious day ☀️ at the charming Hill House Stroud with folk dancers and musicians from Ukraine 🇺🇦, Palestine 🇵🇸 and Malaysia 🇲🇾 few weeks back. The strumming of an Oud and impressive display of talents by young Ukrainians from @kolo_artstudio brought joy to the event 🌈

Massive thank you to @sanctuarybreaks for having us at your fundraiser in conjunction with Refugee Week UK @refugeeweekuk . We were very delighted to be a part of the event filled with colourful folk art and scrumptious feast. So much good vibes that we blew kisses to the cottage when dancing Shepherd’s Hey with the guests that day 😘

Our opening dance was joined by a blackbird in a giant horse chestnut tree singing along to @mirandarutter7 “Golden Blackbird Jig” 🐦‍⬛ . ‘Twas a magical duet 🥹 ✨

Sanctuary Breaks is a Stroud based registered charity that provides away days, retreats and workshops for people who faced forced migration. Feel free to check out their socials and website to find out more of their charity work or - if you’d like to book a stay at their gorgeous @hillhouseretreats 🏡

We’d also love to thank you @danmackenz for all these mega stunning shots 📸😍 and Holly from Sanctuary Breaks 🫶 taken in Stroud, Gloucestershire by @boss.morris

🌞 SOLSTICE🌞

The major highlight for us was the exuberance and enthusiasm radiated from you folk who stick clashed, hopped and giggled with us in the Basic Morris workshop 😍😍😍 You guys are defo experienced Morris dancers in disguise!

We loveee that those spirits continued in the Solstice procession and rite led by the iconic @tree_carr later that day. You guys are super grand! 🤘🤘🤘

For that, we are so thankful to @gardenoftomorrowfest & @earthpercent for having us over the weekend at the serene and stunning Trematon Castle ground. What a dreamy unreal place! 😍🌿🌻✨

Always a pleasure to catch up with our friends from @field.system - Mark, Millie and Socks 🐶 Love the curated exhibition space - stellar lineup of artists and artwork⚡️⚡️⚡️

We also had a great time in flag making workshop by the brilliant @alicegabb ⭐️ We’ve been the fans of her work for quite long! Enjoyed every second of your sharing on the banner art history!

A special shoutout to @hollyastle who has caught our heart with her gorgeous illustraton work perfectly captured the Solstice parade that day 🌞 Check out her IG for more of her exquisite work 🫶

Thank you so much to @aronattwood @werkha_music @milliganbeaumont who were our beasts that day! The parade would have been less magical without you ✨✨✨

Last but never least, massive thank you to our musos @concertinarob & @mirandarutter7 for accompanying us with your music that day ❤️

The years come and go, and the cheese keeps on rolling down Coopers Hill, with dairy-devil competitors tumbling in its wake.

And speaking of ‘wake’, @boss.morris this year helped to revive the traditional ‘wake’ element of the Cheese-Rolling festivities: ceremonies and revelries that became somewhat overshadowed by the pursuit of Double Gloucester!

They woke the hill, danced around the maypole, and had the honour of rolling the cheese in the opening race!

CHEESE CHEESE CHEESE! 🧀

Thanks to @folkuspocus and @_thistle_and_rose for making it happen! And thanks to @ffern.co Folk Foundation for their generous support! by @boss.morris

Just want to take the opp to give a big thanks to @inhousescreenprinting who did a phenomenal job yet again, and also @outofkeymerch who kindly let us squat on their merch stand and flogged our stuff like bloody legends xx

Just a few boring bits of info: Royal Mail have put up their prices AGAIN so we have had to raise parcel postage costs by 40p. The good news is, if you live in Stroud there is now the option to collect from town 🤘
Also I’m now going to be posting things out on MONDAYS and THURSDAYS only bc the poor woman at the post office is sick of the sight of me

My brother's and I grew up in the shadow of Coopers Hill, our parents took us to watch the Cheese Rolling on and off since we were small.Time marched on and we got older and life changed, leading my brother and his wife owning a house at the foot of the hill itself.

With the help of @boss.morris,
@folkuspocus
and @_thistle_and_rose have brought the 'Wake' aspect of the event back to life. It was beautiful to witness this moment in the history of the cheese rolling tradition.
