Most colonial lighthouses had to be rebuilt at least once but the same cannot be said for the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. It shone for the first time on June 11, 1764 and has remained standing ever since. Many lighthouses in that age had been built of wood and were ravaged by fire and/or weather, but this lighthouse was built of stone and stood 103 ft. tall.

You can till climb the stairs to the top to this day and I hope to do so eventually.

This octagonal-shaped light house is a real testament to learning from the mistakes of others, doing things right the first time, and being made of sterner stuff.

Have you ever visited this landmark? What are your thoughts?
