There is a moment, when you have been looking at something long enough, when it stops being a thing and becomes an experience. The Art of Looking is a workshop for finding that moment — and staying with it long enough to put it on paper.
Working from a curated collection of natural objects — bark, stone, seed heads, feathers, shell, etc — you will spend a half-day making drawings in graphite and watercolour. Not finished pictures. Not things to frame. Just honest records of careful seeing.
Suitable for complete beginners and experienced drawers alike. All materials provided. Informed throughout by the ideas of John Ruskin and John O’Donohue. taken in Moycullen , Galway by @botanicalartexpo

Hydrangea bracts Watercolour 33 x 10cm framed size 40 x 17cm

Although I find hydrangea bushes rather unremarkable in summer, their blooms offering little to tempt butterflies or bees, I am always captivated in autumn by the transformation of their fading bracts. As the colours soften into muted, papery tones, they reveal a quiet, fragile beauty that seems made for watercolour. Their subtle variations of hue and form invite endless study, and when laid side by side against a white background, they offer hours of painting pleasure.
My exhibition ‘All in the Detail’ is taking place at Daróg Wine Bar, 56 Dominick Street, Galway City, H91 K225, Ireland, from Sunday 26 October 2025 to Monday 5 January 2026.
As part of the exhibition, Daróg will host ‘Le Chéile: An Evening of Creative Conversation’ on Monday 24 November, where Jane joins owner Edel Lukács in conversation about her creative process. The evening includes two wines paired for the discussion, a pop-up art shop, and 10% off artwork purchased on the night.
Tickets (€20 per person) — booking essential. https://www.darogwinebar.com/artevents taken in Galway, Ireland by @botanicalartexpo

The final countdown has begun in preparations for the Galway Garden Festival at Claregalway Castle, which takes place next Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 July. Among the many activities and events will be the 12th Annual Claregalway Castle Botanical Art Expo - an opportunity to view - and perhaps to buy - botanical and floral art by some of Ireland’s leading artists in this genre. The exhibition will be opened by Jennie Beale, Founder and Director of Brigit’s Garden, on Friday evening 4 July at 7.00p.m. (for 7.30), and will be open over the Garden Festival weekend from 11.00a.m. To 6.00p.m. We will also have a very well-stocked merchandise table with cards, prints, books, and other items with a botanical theme.
This year we are also delighted to share our space in the Banquet Hall with Mark’s Bonsai, on behalf of the Connaught Bonsai Club - an excellent opportunity to see and learn about an art form ‘where nature speaks in miniature’.
The Galway Garden Festival is a wonderful day out for the whole family, offering plants from some of Ireland’s leading nurseries, along with crafts, live music, art, delicious food and much more. Don’t miss it! 😊🌻 taken in Claregalway Castle by @botanicalartexpo

Everyone is invited to attend the opening of the 12th Annual Claregalway Castle Botanical Art Expo on Friday 4 July at 7.00 p.m. (for 7.30). We look forward to welcoming our guest speaker, Jennie Beale, the founder and director of the wonderful Celtic themed Brigit’s Garden in Rosscahill, Co. Galway.

We shall also be joined for the Garden Festival weekend by Marek Zemla of Marek’s Bonsai, with a display of his beautiful bonsai.

If you plan to attend, it would be very helpful if you could RSVP in the comments or to info@claregalwaycastle.ie so that we have some idea of numbers for refreshments.

Most of the paintings in the exhibition are for sale, with prices to fit most budgets. We shall also have a very well stocked merchandise table with cards, prints, books and other botanically themed items. taken in Claregalway Castle by @botanicalartexpo

Hours of careful selection and planning go into staging an exhibition of paintings - assessing the balance of colours, styles, painting size, etc. - but the hard work is made a little easier when it’s taking place in the surroundings of a beautifully restored castle, and when there are wonderful, supportive people around. Thank you Rose, Steve, Nancy, Gerry, Mike, John, Sean, and all the artists who have entrusted their work to us for the 11th Annual Claregalway Castle Botanical Art Expo. And a very special thank you to Éamonn, whose vision has brought this beautiful building back to life. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening this Friday 5 July at 7 p.m. for 7.30 p.m. with guest speaker Dr Marina Levitina, founder of Lough Rainey Nature Reserve in Co. Clare. taken in Claregalway Castle by @botanicalartexpo

I’m delighted that my watercolour painting of Corylus avellana (hazel) is currently part of the Irish Society of Botanical Artist’s exhibition ‘Crainn na h’Éireann’ at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, in Dublin. The exhibition runs until Sunday 12 November inclusive. Do go to see it if you get a chance - there are so many beautiful paintings in the exhibition, and most are for sale. taken in National Botanic Gardens of Ireland by @botanicalartexpo
