HERFSTAGENDA 🍂🍄‍🟫

In my opinion, fungi are the most sensory inviting organisms! And the great news is, that eventhough humans are much more scared of mushrooms than they are of plants…it’s actually safe to touch all mushrooms (except for maybe one that only grows in some parts of asia and oceania)! You really can’t say that about plants.

A large amount of mycotoxins in mushrooms, is actually only harmful if ingested. This is because these toxins are not absorbed dermally or mucosal, but need to be digested (and in some cases even metabolised). In some cases amatoxins (from the Death cap, for instance) might be absorbed in the mouth in small amounts. There is still some debate about this, but it is true that tasting a death cap mushroom is not wise. However, generally mycotoxins are not absorbed in the mouth. Of course there is always the chance of accidentally choking and swallowing a piece. That’s why the ‘nibble and spit test’ isn’t suitable for deadly toxic mushrooms, or even certain types of fungi. But for the Russula family for instance, the nibble and spit test is a commonly used method to determine if the mushroom is edible. In this whole genus of mushrooms (Russula’s) there is only one deadly toxic mushroom (Russula subnigricans) that does not grow in Europe. I am not inviting people to put random wild mushrooms in their mouth, but it is interesting that humans fear plants much less, even though there are so many plants that are toxic to the touch.

All of this to say, that we maybe shouldnt be soooo scared of mushrooms. To me it’s beatiful that the fungal kingdom ‘gave’ us, as very sensory beings, the chance to explore them using our senses. This way we can stay curious, become more informed, learn about nature, and therefore become less scared of it. Of course being a little scared is fine. Acknowledging the full scope of nature’s force is a form of respect. Nature does not equal safety. However, really learning about it, and building a more reciprocal way of living to the natural world (which imo is eventually better for all living organisms) doesn’t happen if you are just scared.

1 extra mushroom walk - 6th of December!

For all the lovely people who wanted to attend one of my mushroom walks, but couldn’t because they were sold out. 1 extra mushroom walk in Deventer as we are slowly moving towards winter. I know that autumn just began (or so it feels like), but a gal needs to think ahead. We might still find plenty of mushrooms on the 6th of December! We will focus on wood loving brackets and polypores. Hope to see you there!

Lots of love,

Elske

First three people getting all mushrooms right, will receive a small package with some fun goodies (some mushroom related, some not)!

I was inspired by a few wonderful mushroom walk participants texting me pictures of their forest adventures and the mushrooms they came across.

So here’s a little challenge for you all!

Everyone can participate, but I can only send the ‘price’ to people in the EU.

Good luckkk! 🍄

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be prepared! It even is great to be self-sufficient, but I’d propose to change that to being together-sufficient. It’s not feasible for everyone to learn skills, after all, we all live within systems we rely upon even if they are destructive. But together we are responsible for taking care of each other when shit hits the fan. It’s equally hilarious, sad and terrifying, that we are told to think ahead by the same people with the most power. Of course, most of them are regular people with a big ass salary doing what they think is best. That’s not enough though! Really thinking ahead means politicians, leaders, people with money, teachers, make decisions that will prevent the need of having a noodpakket. Choices that make the world a better place for all organisms. But as it has become clear, the richest people can now collect extensive emergency kits, medicine, and whole ass bunkers and weapons. Let’s change that by relearning important skills, eating the rich and becoming wilder.

Sincerely,

Your local feral witch ✨ by @bottled_botanicals

Mooie oude gebouwen
Geweldige trinkets
Een ontzetten mycofiel land!
Natuurlijk mijn favo restorant @olde_hansa

Nu weer back to business! 🍄 by @bottled_botanicals
