Within 12 hours of meeting Steve, he had offered me a record deal in my kitchen and then left to watch the MLB All Star Game. This was after he sporadically attended a house show I played to 50 kids in Nashville, getting electrocuted by the microphone in my lil blouse. Leading up to his role as president of @canvasbackmusic, Steve’s life has been an endless strew of these moments in countless basements and clubs finding special moments voices, discovering some of musics most important voices. EPISODE 4: JENNY OWEN YOUNGS

Sometimes pain is the strongest link we have to other humans. This certainly was the case the day I met Jenny, as we wrote in her lovely LA home: with literally no air conditioning. Despite our sweat and dehydration, I’ll remember that day always as one of the most comfortable and gentle writing sessions I’ve ever been a part of, thanks to Jenny’s immediate kindness and acceptance of me as I was. This conversation covers a lot, but no matter the topic Jenny’s kindness and genuine attentiveness cuts through. Also her dog is cuter than a literal angel from heaven. EPISODE 3: HUDSON MCNEESE (artist who photographed our album cover/ my fav photos of all time)

Hudson and I met for the first time in 2018 (?) at a house show in Nashville TN. From the second I saw him there was an immediate bond. Moments later, he and his band mates had circled around me chanting “YOU CAN DO THIS” because I was really stoned and scared to play our set, making me laugh to the point of tears, and feel so loved in a really real way hahah. That dynamic has remained the same since that day. Hudson is the funniest person I know, and absolute genius and someone who always considers other people first. A massive heart on this little tiny boy, lemme tell you what. It was a pleasure to talk with him and say a whole lot of nothin, but to see his wisdom shine through even our silliest of moments!!!!!! EPISODE 2: ANDY HULL

There are very few people in the world who not only make me feel like my perspective and passion for life are equally met, but can also put those feelings into music and words. Andy is a quintessential part of my relationship with music and since this friendship has begun, is a huge piece in my love of life. We met up years ago to write a song for Sunflower, and left feeling like family. The stories he shares in the episode seriously are coated with gold and kindness, humor and honesty. episode 1: Joey Brodnax and drew Bauml

Jesus H. Christ. If you would’ve told me that 5 years prior too moving to nashville, two of the first people I met upon moving here would be teaching me the greatest lessons of life I’ve come to know, I would’ve punched you in the face. But you would’ve been right. Joey and drew never cease to inspire me and (literally) millions of other people with their devotion to truth, art, kindness, and the human experience.
