We discovered a vast underwater Victorian river dump this morning and found so many interesting treasures. Every year we return to this area to see what treasures might have emerged from the river silt. Today’s adventure didn’t disappoint and we found loads of exciting historical bottles and ceramics. #treasurehunt #history #oldbottles taken in Scotland by @bottlesfromthedeep

I’m back in one of my favourite Scottish lochs today searching underwater for Victorian treasures. We started digging for lost treasures in a new part of the Victorian dump today and found loads of interesting old glass and ceramics. Perhaps the highlight of the dig was seeing the lovely Russell’s stoneware emerge from the earth and the funny porcelain doll’s leg.

I never thought I would find so many treasures up here in this remote Scottish Loch! After a long walk in I plunged into the refreshing water and began to search! It took a while but I eventually found a site with all sorts of interesting old bottles. It’s always hard to choose a favourite but I think the Stoneware Ginger at the end might take it for me! #treasurehunt #history #oldbottles taken in Scotland by @bottlesfromthedeep

I found this mysterious glass goblet at the bottom of the river and it turned out it might be hand cut Bohemian glass! It cleaned up very well but it had some damage to the rim. I thought I would try and restore this river treasure to its former glory and this is how I did it! #treasurehunt #history #oldbottles taken in Scotland by @bottlesfromthedeep

We spotted some Lupins by the river today and thought they would frame our new ginger beers nicely! It’s pretty rare for us to find these in the Scottish lochs, let alone four in a month! Erin also found her first one ever on her birthday which was great. Although they were mass produced and semi disposable items, each one is a work of art. It’s amazing to see the little details from the potters hands, the way the neck has been dipped and the fantastic array of graphics and fonts used. We always wonder how many the potter had thrown the day and what they were thinking about when they made the bottle. We bet they were delicious too! #oldbottles #antiquebottles #treasurehunting #photography taken in Scotland by @bottlesfromthedeep

The conditions in the loch were stunning for this dive! We had great visibility and the sun warmed our backs in the cool loch water. We swam far and found some top shelf finds. It was also a momentous day because Erin found her very first stoneware ginger beer!

We have just cleaned up our two lovely stoneware ginger beers that we found recently. If you ever happen to find a bit of crusty stained stoneware we have discovered an amazing method of cleaning it. Firstly scrub off any loose dirt and then while still wet rub in a good layer of Bar Keepers Friend powder to make a thick paste all over the ceramic. Wrap them in slightly damp paper towel and then wrap tightly in plastic kitchen wrap. Place them somewhere warm for a couple of days and you will be amazed when you remove the wrap! To be safe, soak in fresh water for a few days to help neutralise any cleaning product.
