It was great meeting the impressive Evan Botzki behind Cleveland Public Library as I was leaving for the day. We had a chance to talk for a few minutes, and it quickly became clear that we could have spent another hour swapping stories. Evan told me he had been hoping our paths would cross after seeing posts featuring some of his friends, including Meredith Scroggin, Patrick McGuan, and Kent Smith. I was happy to add him to the growing collection of Clevelanders and Northeast Ohioans who help tell the story of our community. Hopefully our next conversation will be much longer, and maybe I will even get the chance to show him and his girlfriend around the Library.

At 25 years old, Evan is a proud Euclidean who loves calling his hometown “God’s Country.” He is a leader in local Democratic politics, serves on the Euclid City Schools Board of Education, is vice president of the Euclid Historical Society and Museum, and helped create the city’s current flag. People who know Evan know he loves talking with locals because, like me, he believes every person has a story worth hearing. Evan has a genuine appreciation for the history, neighborhoods, and people that make Euclid special. Whether he is discussing the city’s past, meeting someone new, or sharing a conversation with a longtime resident, his love for Euclid comes through in everything he does.

I had the great privilege of being able to tour the Canopy Child Advocacy Center this morning.

Canopy is doing incredible work assisting and advocating for children during some of the most difficult times of their lives. They work to make sure that children are connected to the services and resources that they need to begin healing from trauma. Truly, they are a blessing in our community.

Thank you to Jennifer, Kim, and the entire Canopy team for the tour and for the support you provide to our most vulnerable population.

I am a true believer of this great country. I believe in the uniqueness of this country to welcome all and welcome them as they are. This is not a new virtue either. This is how our country was founded, as evidenced by the fact that we translated our founding document almost immediately so that it could be understood by all.

We have our differences, but we are all Americans. We do not need to fit a mold. God bless us all by @botzki4board

Had a great time talking to folks at the doors today about our Democratic candidates! Folks in Euclid are tired of Republican mismanagement, and they’re ready to show it in November!

I wanted to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very meaningful Juneteenth holiday today!

The value of freedom is not one that we should ever take for granted, and it should be treasured close to our hearts. I am grateful to be an Ohioan, for our state contributed so much to the ending of the vile practice of slavery. May we forever curse it and all forms of its related wicked racism that has branched out since its collapse.

It was a very incredible morning at the Lakeshore Coffeehouse! I appreciated being able to chat with members of the community about their concerns and questions. We talked about things going on in Euclid and within the Democratic Party. It is my hope that together we can all build a strong community and an even better place to live, work, and play. by @botzki4board

I’d like to take the time to wish everyone a meaningful Pride Month. May we all take the time this month to remember that love is yet another right earned in blood. As with all rights, may it be another that we stand ready to protect.

Last year, I told the story of Willem Ardonéus. Ardonéus was a gay Dutch man who lost his life resisting the Nazis. This year, I would like to tell the story of one of his lesbian compatriots, Frieda Belinfante.

Prior to the war, Belinfante was a musical artist and conductor, leading her own chamber orchestra. This changed with the invasion and occupation of the Netherlands by Germany. She was quoted as saying “Boys, there is no orchestra. We have never existed”. With this, she became involved in Dutch resistance.

In her resistance against the Nazis, Belinfante helped forge documents for Jewish individuals. While not directly apart of the attack, she played a role in preparing the bombing of the Nazi registry that would ultimately lead to the execution of Ardonéus. She would survive, and continued to help fellow artists and Jewish people for the rest of the war, even despite the great danger.

Belinfante would ultimately survive the war, returned to music, and lived until 1995. May we remember her and all of those who have died for freedom. by @botzki4board

It was a great time at Councilman Tolton’s first Wednesday Walk at Hero Park! It was great getting to talk to folks and equally great getting to walk around the park with such company! I appreciate Councilman Tolton allowing me to talk with folks about what is going on in the Euclid Schools! I hope to be able to continue keeping folks updated at more events like this in the future!
