I took a 15 year break from bouldering, but am back with a vengeance. I’m working hard to achieve double digits again as a 58 year old!!

After having an epic couple of weeks, we finally made it to Joe’s Valley. We are super worn out, tired and recovering from colds, but when Joe’s is good, you go climbing! I did not intend to get on this one, but after trying it in the Spring, I figured I would just re-acquaint myself for when I was feeling better. Well…after three tries, I was standing on top and couldn’t be more psyched. What a great power problem!!! The temps are amazing right now, so thinking that was a huge advantage. Either way, I had a super fun short session and couldn’t be more stoked to be here for a while.

We finally made it Joe’s Valley after many epics. We drove in yesterday from Boise Idaho getting in late while still recovering from colds. The weather was absolutely beautiful today, so I had to run up and just play on rock a little bit, but ended up having a great session!! I’ve walked past this gem so many times, not paying any attention to it. After seeing a video of this sweet problem, I really wanted to try it even if I wasn’t feeling the best. What an incredible problem!! I did it without videoing it because I just wanted to get some climbing in, but after I did it, I had to shoot it, it’s way too good not to!

Still stuck in Eastern Oregon, but luckily there is the Eastern Oregon Climbing Center to go play on while the truck gets fixed.

Well… we tried leaving Oregon, but our fridge blew up and needed replaced. We thought we were on our way to Joe’s, but the truck had other ideas. While getting gas at a truck stop, oil started gushing out from under the truck. Nothing more awesome than braking down on a Sunday. So… since we couldn’t do anything until Monday, it was parking lot bouldering time. No hike, min pads needed and sick granite.

We’ve stopped in Oregon for a little bit on our way down to Joe’s. The Carver bouldering area is super fun. Tons of problems on super good rock. I ran around checking the classics, and got on some V7’s, 8’s and a 9er, working the moves to hopefully go back and finish some. Hoping the weather holds for a few more days.

It’s crazy how much there is to do in Squamish!!!! Eli and I toured the Britannia Copper Mine, the largest in the world back in the early 1900’s. The mine shut down for good in 1975, but they just turned it into a museum around the mid 2000’s. If you’re needing something to do on a rest day, go check this place out, crazy fun!!!! taken in Squamish, British Columbia by @boulderingageless

Well, the rain was a coming, so Danielle and I ran back to the forest for an after work easy mileage session. Danielle wanted to repeat things she’s already worked through to help build the confidence she needs for desert climbing. I was pretty spanked from the day before’s sending/ ass whooping session, but knew that there was a possibility that we may not get to climb again before we leave in a couple of days. I truly hoped that I would be able to adjust to Squamish and climb some hard things I’ve done before in the month we were here. It took much longer for me to adjust to the climbing and deal with weather to really focus on anything close to V10. I tried some V9’s and some old 8’s I’ve done in the past, but my skin wasn’t cooperating, so instead, we just climbed what world class boulders we could and had a blast. We met so many super nice people in the woods (banana pants Joe), and are sad to leave, but are also super psyched to get back out to the West where desert climbing is coming into season!!!!

My skin is very much struggling here, but managed to pulled this one out of my $ss. “Airtight Garage” V7. The weather is coming in, so possibly this may be our last day on dry rock, but fingers crossed we have a couple more days of dryness before we leave.

Coming back to Squamish 18 years after the last time we were here is insanely cool and frustrating at the same time. Climbing here in my 30’s is vastly different than in my late 50’s. I thought I would remember some of the movement, but it really is like being here for the first time. The forest is different, the area is different and the climbers are very different, in a good way. I really thought that I would be able to climb at my limit in bouldering mecca, but I’m just getting beat down. I will say that it is super fun re-learning how to boulder again here though!! My favorite problem by far has been the high ball warm up on Black Dyke!! That one at leased feels like I’ve accomplished something, lol!! I am getting on harder problems finally with it drying out, so hopefully I can do something close to my max within the next week or so. If not, we’ll head out of Squamish with a long list of easy classics and at leased tried some of the old hard ones.
