Beary Cute, also Beary DangerousFriendly reminder: wildlife lives here too and though they are totally adorbs, they are for enjoying with your EYES a very far, far, farrrrrrrr distance away.This week BPD Animal Protection APO Murray and Supervisor Whittle were flagged down about a mama bear and her two cubs in a yard in the city. When they pulled up, they saw the furry family in the front yard. The cubs were playing with a birdfeeder and garden hose while mom stayed vigilant. Animal Protection parked to block potential foot traffic, but there were already a few leashed dogs with their people walking by. A barking dog scared the cubs enough that they climbed the front yard tree and mom huffed and puffed a bit but followed her babies up the tree to a safe distance. Animal Protection advised other passersby in the area to stay on the opposite sidewalk or avoid the area for the time being.This adorable family is an opportunity for the reminder that wildlife is wild and can be dangerous. This is one of many reasons we have a dog leash law and an ordinance against feeding many wildlife species. To prevent nuisance wildlife, generally trash should be secured in a garage if not with a locking trashcan or other system in place to prevent unwanted buffet guests. Bird seed and hummingbird feeders may need to be removed in the summer months when there is extra bear activity. Sick/injured/ aggressive wildlife should be reported to Dispatch by calling 303-441-3333 so Animal Protection officers and/or Colorado Parks and Wildlife can respond to maintain human and animal safety. Congrats Cadets!Please join us in congratulating your Boulder Police cadets who competed in the Law Enforcement Explorer Post Advisor’s Association of Colorado (L.E.E.P.A.A.C.) competition!Not only did they learn a lot putting their skills and practice to the test, but they also brought home some pretty awesome hardware and recognition! The BPD teams took home First Place for unknown trouble, Second Place in high-risk traffic stops, Third Place in traffic stops, Third Place in the obstacle course and Fourth Place in report writing. There in a CrisisThis past week, your Boulder Police hostage negotiators participated in a regional competition and took home second place for the second year in a row. This is the third year in a row they have been recognized as a top team in the region after taking first place in 2024. The Rocky Mountain Hostage Negotiators Competition brought together law enforcement teams from across the area to put their communication, critical thinking, and negotiation skills to the test. After a full day of challenging scenarios, the competition came to a close with several lessons learned.Please join us in congratulating BPD Sergeant Meehan, Detective Montano-Banda, Officer Mills, Detective Sasse, Detective Porter and Officer Cook-Cruz for their hard work, which helps keep everyone safe. The community is invited to Chief Redfearn’s third Town Hall of the year on Wednesday, July 29.The East Boulder Town Hall will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the meeting room at @eastandcoboulder, 2100 Central Ave. Chief Redfearn will talk about crime and current issues in the city and then attendees will hear about our new Public Safety Information Center, Drone as First Responder as well as e-moto laws and enforcement efforts. The chief and other speakers will then take your questions on these topics and other public safety concerns. Questions can be submitted via the link on our website or in person on notecards.Chief Redfearn is holding quarterly Town Halls in different parts of the city throughout the year and wants to hear from you. Walking and Tacos FTWJoin your Boulder Police Department for our next Pearl Street Mall Walk on Thursday, July 23, at 3 p.m. Commander Heath will be bringing Sergeant Fitzgerald, our Community Engagement and Homeless Outreach and Response supervisor. This is a continuation in our walking series in which different members of Boulder Police will join the commander on various blocks of Pearl Street so that community members can ask questions and get to know their BPD employees.We’ll start at 15th and Pearl Streets and walk west to T/aco at Walnut and Broadway.If you join us for the whole walk, T/aco will donate two tacos, chips and salsa and a beverage to participants. Rattlesnake Bite AlertWe don’t want to alarm the community, but we do want to remind folks that there are rattlesnakes in our city and people need to be observant.This past week a dog was bitten at Foothills Community Park. Thankfully the dog will be okay, but that’s not always the case so we wanted to share this for awareness. Please pay attention, especially in that area, for rattlesnakes. They usually keep to themselves but when surprised or a creature gets too close, they can bite. Finding You a New DriverThanks to good policework and technology, Boulder Police found and arrested a wanted suspect this week and removed a stolen gun from the street.@auroracopd let us know the suspect might be in our city and Flock license plate readers confirmed he was.BPD’s Special Enforcement Unit coordinated with Patrol officers who spotted the suspect’s car around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Officers Mulhall and Hickenbottom stopped the car after witnessing a traffic violation. The suspect was on his way to pick up someone as part of a rideshare. Instead, we gave him a ride to jail on Aurora’s charges for sex assault on a child (4 counts); aggravated incest (2 counts); indecent exposure - expose genitals to child (1 Count).Further investigation revealed drug paraphernalia in plain view and a stolen gun with a high-capacity magazine under the driver’s seat. Nice spot Officer Myers. The suspect’s new charges include theft, large capacity magazines prohibited and possession of drug paraphernalia. As in every criminal case, charges against the suspect are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.Stay safe, Boulder. Heading into the July 4th weekend, we know fireworks are a tradition, but this is your friendly reminder to leave those to the professionals in cities where they’re allowed. Officers will be looking for illegal fireworks, and we ask you to call Dispatch non-emergency, 303-441-3333, with specific location information if you see anyone setting off illegal fireworks. Officers will respond to such reports along with other priority calls occurring at the same time throughout the city.It is illegal in the City of Boulder to use or possess fireworks of any kind. As stated in City of Boulder’s Municipal Code: “The possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling, and use of fireworks are prohibited.” In addition, there is no open burning allowed within the city limits of Boulder at any time. This permanent burn ban includes portable outdoor fire pits and burning piles or bonfires of any size, or any type, of flammable material. All ignition sources — including smoking and campfires — are also prohibited on OSMP land. Boulder Fire-Rescue and other city wildland fire resources deployment will be considered on special occasions and on high-risk days. It only takes a small spark to put the community at risk so please be aware of your local fire regulations and recreate responsibly to help prevent wildfires. by @boulderpolice

Got Crime?We know Boulder loves its bikes. Unfortunately so do thieves. That’s why we’re sharing this video from a recent targeted bike theft operation.Though the suspect rode over a mile away after stealing it, he couldn’t hide from our eyes in the sky and the stealth response of our Special Enforcement Unit. As in every criminal case, charges against the suspect are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty. While we were doing this, officers and detectives were engaged in a proactive operation resulting in the following arrests: *cited two suspects for trespassing and criminal possession of a financial device (we also saw lots of drug paraphernalia in the area),*cited a suspect for felony trespassing,*arrested a suspect for felony drug distribution,*arrested a suspect during a traffic stop for felony drug distribution charges with meth and fentanyl seizures as well as more than $1,000 and drug distribution items (K9 Knox alerted to the vehicle), and,*arrested a suspect for two outstanding warrants and drug possession.Stay safe out there, Boulder, and if you see something, say something.
