My pursuit of global freshwater monster fish recently led me to the foothills of the Himalayas in search of the legendary goonch catfish. Widely regarded as one of the hardest fish on earth to catch, I knew the odds of landing a proper sized specimen were slim—but success would put me in rare company.

After two years of planning, 32 hours of continuous travel, and 90 hours spent soaking baits, it all came together in a single unforgettable moment. On the final day of fishing I got my shot at a true monster goonch. An absolute war over boulders and rapids brought me my SEVENTH species of freshwater fish over 100lb. The fish measured 73 inches (6’1) long with a 36 inch girth!

I’ve realized at this point I’ve really entered rare territory as an angler - particularly among American anglers… I’ve got some big targets and endeavors in the works. My eyes are already on a handful of species hardly seen or captured. Excited for what’s to come!

A major thanks to the team @wildwatercreek what an outstanding operation and team! Could not suggest a better group to give the absolute best chance at this remarkable species!

$The fish that has been referred to as “The Everest of Freshwater Fishing”. Among the world’s gnarliest fish, The Goliath tigerfish stands apart. Levels above anything I’ve ever chased, I see now why so few have even tried to go catch one and even fewer have been successful. Honored and humbled to be part of a very small club. I led a small crew of very different but equally passionate anglers into the Congo where we found a ton of misconceptions of the country exist but the fishing is as challenging as advertised. It’s unavoidably long hours, and days passing by with absolutely zero action lulling you into a peaceful numbness only to be occasionally disrupted by instantaneous carnage and chaos. The intensity with which they hammer a bait (or lure as I found out) is shocking. We fished the second largest river on earth by sheer water volume (second only to the Amazon). It is THE deepest… and the only river to cross the equator TWICE. You must understand as an angler you’re a mere drop in the ocean here. Fishing the tiniest fraction of the water - for the tiniest fraction of fish - with the tiniest fraction of hook up to landing. To successfully encounter a proper Goliath tigerfish is a real treat. #goliathtigerfish #tigerfish #monsterfish #congoriver #congo #africa #africanwildlife #worldclass #follow #sharethis #boundlesspursuit #passion by @boundlesspursuit$

Last September started the wildest 12 month campaign of fishing I could have ever imagined. Spanning multiple countries across 3 continents chasing some of the most notorious fresh and saltwater species on the planet. The call to explore and chase dream experiences has been so strong… pursuing my passion ‘boundlessly’, meeting awesome people and staying focused on my path, my course. I’m not sure what the next 12 months may bring, though major endeavors are in the works. Keeping the pursuit the point, and aggressively chasing the things I’ve always wanted to from here on out.

The Himalayan boogeyman… what a foe, and what an honor to have encountered goonch at monster size. I’ve got one more to trip tangle with monster catfish later this year and then it’s all eyes on 2027. We’ll be in Costa Rica looking for billfish in January, then focus shifts to something unprecedented in the freshwater realm. Happy about the milestones hit as an angler thus far, as today I turned FOURTY years old.

We said goodbye to our beautiful boy Badge this morning. I’ve dreaded the day for years. He has been the most consequential dog of my lifetime… 13 years ago I was a young law enforcement officer - navigating a first career and a new marriage… when we brought Badge home and started a family. A short time later we welcomed our first daughter, Badge was there to meet her. Career moves took us from city to city and across country, a second daughter born a few years later and Badge remained a constant. He grew into a remarkable, masculine, beautiful dog in his prime years. He lived a unique life, even an appearance on the Today Show. Our little family has never known a day without him until now. I carried him into our home, and I carried him out. So blessed for all the memories and love. Until we see eachother again

Good one from the vault popped up in memories today - 14 years ago on this day chasing big fish on stretches of the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas. An awesome bend on a stretch of river where virtually no one ever chased gar, and it had some absolute monsters. I think we were a bit ahead of our time with these fish going back even years earlier when it was much more common to be lambasted and scrutinized for interacting with one - where they were called useless trash fish. Their renaissance in the last 20 years or so has been something really awesome to see.
