Super fun one from my book.. I based this off an old vintage airbrush painting from the 70s/80s.. I can’t remember the original artist but it’s always been my favorite era of art and I always draw a ton of inspiration from Frazetta, Vallejo and the likes.. thank you so much Kris! @kspitshades it was such a pleasure to hang and chat with you guys. @haydenthegoon that includes you! This was also under an INCREDIBLE tattoo from my friend @richardsmithtattoo dude rips in his sleep.. I’ve got some limited availability for the rest of March. Booking for April! #traditionaltattoo by @bowertattoo

Sorry y’all. After lookin’ at my post of this painting last night. It was washed out and lookin awful so with some natural lighting, I think we got a much better photo..

Fudō Myōō (不動明王)—the “Immovable Wise King”—is a powerful protector figure in Japanese tattooing, rooted in Esoteric Buddhism (Mikkyō). In tattoo design, he represents unshakable resolve, discipline, and the destruction of ignorance rather than evil or wrath.

Visually, Fudō Myōō is depicted with a fierce, scowling expression, one eye often slightly closed, symbolizing balance between wrath and compassion. He typically holds a kurikara sword to cut through delusion and a rope (kensaku) to bind negative forces. Flames surround him, representing purification through hardship and spiritual transformation. His seated or standing pose on rock reinforces his immovability.

In tattooing, Fudō Myōō is commonly used as a guardian motif—chosen by wearers seeking strength through adversity, self-mastery, or protection during difficult life paths. Traditional compositions favor bold linework, heavy blacks, and controlled color (deep reds, blues, golds, and fire tones), making him especially effective in large-scale work like backs, sleeves, or chest panels.

Culturally, Fudō Myōō tattoos are seen as a serious, devotional image, often respected as much as they are feared—less decorative, more symbolic, and intended to project inner fortitude rather than outward aggression.

In Japanese tattooing, the black snake is a symbol of quiet power and protection. Rather than fear or deception, the snake represents wisdom, patience, and survival—a creature that moves deliberately, strikes only when necessary, and sheds its skin as a reminder of renewal and rebirth. Black in particular carries associations with mystery, depth, and guarding against evil, making it a powerful talisman meant to ward off misfortune and unseen threats.

Rooted in folklore and spiritual belief, snakes are respected as ancient beings tied to the earth and the unseen world. A black snake speaks to endurance through hardship, mastery over darker forces, and the understanding that real strength doesn’t need to announce itself. Controlled, watchful, and eternal.
