‘When you ride a horse you borrow freedom’ - I did that yesterday- my first & last day this season, complete with the best of friends & family. Grateful for stealing a safe & happy 2 hours out, as I hang my boots up for a summer of rehab ready for autumn.

Just in case the surgeon was in any doubt which leg he was operating on yesterday - the 5th operation in 9 months - it’s the one covered in scars sporting a marker pen arrow and a bright yellow hospital sock. He got the right (left) leg and the op seemed to go well yesterday. The tibial rod has settled well since it was put in in December by the orthopaedic surgeon and I’ve since had two ops under a neurological surgeon, one in December for a tibial nerve graft and one yesterday for a peroneal nerve graft. As the surgeon said yesterday, I didn’t break my leg, the whole leg was destroyed, the bones, the neurological system, the vascular system, the fibres, the muscles, the skin, the lot and it’s going to take a while for a number of specialists to repair each part at the right time, as best as possible … brilliant people! I’m very grateful to have kept my leg, we’re getting there 🤞🏼 and there’s plenty of content for the book in the meantime! taken in The Wellington Hospital by @bowilson.writes

A day I was never sure would come … but 8 long months later and finally back in the saddle. Just a very steady one off for now to keep mental health in check as I await the next operation. ✨💫⭐️🌟✨ by @bowilson.writes

Horace Batten Bootmakers - the Batten family have been making boots since the early 1800s. Now in their workshop in Northamptonshire they continue to make made to measure, bespoke riding boots for the hunting field and cavalry. On hearing about my accident they set about making me some bespoke boots that I can put on without too much of a to do, in fact, they’re perfect. As a result - today was really a very good day ♥️ @horacebattenbootmaker by @bowilson.writes

Nurses found it very amusing that I was sat in recovery on my laptop having just come round from a 5 hour op. I now have a titanium rod from my knee to ankle … and no frame! 7 months of frame over… relief!

I’m in the process of writing my first novel and on a deadline so needs must! - a memoir of this past year - with amusing stories woven throughout making it all bearable and hopefully an enjoyable read.

I’d been in recovery for 6 hours when I was told there wasn’t room on the ward for me so I discharged myself and now recovering at home, happily floating on morphine. Hoping this is the final operation and last leg so to speak … taken in Queen's Medical Centre by @bowilson.writes

I mean, if I’m not inspired to write here @nsele.1 in South Africa’s beautiful bushveld, then there’s no hope for me! Currently working to meet tomorrow’s deadline on a piece about Point of View and how it’s up to us how we choose to look at situations- negatively or positively, we decide. Life is the sum of all parts, the beautiful, the tragic, the heartbreaking, the heartwarming.

Here’s the thing … The frame that’s drilled into my leg isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Recent scans show slow progress due to the colossal number of nasty breaks. Best no one asks me when the frame is coming off - I really have no idea. In the meantime I’ve mopped up my tears with a different kind of horsepower. Very happy to be out this morning following hounds. by @bowilson.writes

A momentous day yesterday when the Surgeon told us that after 3 months it was now time to learn to walk again in water with the frame still on my leg. First steps taken in the pool made me very very happy with huge encouragement from @nickwilson.ncw … A drunken astronaut 🧑‍🚀😁 by @bowilson.writes
