When I was a kid, I had a desire to fight and I couldn't understand what it was. I used to fight, I used to wanna fight, but I wouldn't fight just for the fun of it. What I would do was, even in Elementary school, if I saw a bigger kid pick on a smaller kid - that was my chance. So when I used to go to school, I was the police - because I caught you picking on somebody, we're gonna fight because that's what I'd been waiting for.'

In the final bout of his career, 39-year-old Sonny Liston defeated Chuck Wepner in nine rounds at the Armory in Jersey City, New Jersey On This Day in 1970.

Liston, guaranteed a purse of $13,000, earned his share of the winnings. Wepner, on the other hand, fought for a percentage and secured $3,900. However, had the gate not exceeded $30,000, Wepner would have received nothing.

Wepner, known as the 'Bayonne Bleeder' because of his tendency to cut easily, began to bleed from the nose in the second round as the former champion jabbed him continually with his left hand.

Wepner was knocked down by a right to the body in the fifth. The bout was halted after the ninth round due to extensive cuts over both of Wepner's eyes. His injuries required 72 stitches – he also suffered a broken nose and a cracked left cheekbone.

"lf anybody makes a mistake, they are going to take a dirt nap. l Iove to fight.

The monotony of training, people teIIing you what to do and you are a grown man, that's part of it. But on fight night, l want to fight."

'I always knew I was special. I knew I could do something exceptionally well. I just didn't know what it was, or how to go about finding what it was. Boxing is something I do better than anyone else on the planet. But if I put my mind to something the way I do boxing there isn't anything I couldn't do.'

'The greatness or the smallness of a man does not depend upon his education or his wealth or other outer things. Regardless of how wealthy a man is, regardless of how educated he is; if his heart is not great, then he cannot be great. lt is the heart that makes one great or small.'

I'm scared every time I go into the ring, but it's how you handle it. What you have to do is plant your feet, bite down on your mouthpiece and say, 'Let's go.''
