What is The Box Shop??

The Box Shop is San Francisco’s legendary art space for monumental, collaborative art.

For 23 years, our space has been home to artists creating massive sculptures, interactive installations, and awe-inspiring public works that reach millions locally and around the world.

We provide affordable studio space, shared tools, learning, and a supportive community. Artists can build bigger and bolder when building together. The Box Shop creates the environment and culture that makes this possible.

Thank you, Kyana ❤️

After more than two years as The Box Shop’s interim Executive Director, @kyanavanhouten has wrapped up her time in the role.

A Box Shop artist and Flaming Lotus Girl, Kyana stepped up when we learned we were losing our longtime home and the future of the shop was uncertain. She helped us become a nonprofit, raise critical funding, and secure our new home at Van Dyke.

We’re incredibly grateful for everything she poured into The Box Shop during this chapter. And thankfully, she’s not going anywhere. She’ll remain deeply part of The Box Shop community. You’ll still find her at the shop, grinder in hand.

💡DID YOU KNOW: 52% of artists featured on Big Art Loop are emerging artists.

For many artists in the early stages of their careers, opportunities to work at this scale and reach this kind of audience can be hard to come by.

A placement on the Loop can change that: providing a significant artist fee, a monumental platform, and the chance to share their work with thousands of people across San Francisco.

Big Art Loop is creating space for artists to take on ambitious work, build visibility, and reach audiences beyond the traditional gallery and institutional system.

Tokens of zero | site-specific installation, Nevada

How close can one approach fire before one is transformed rather than burnt? These trees eliminated that distance entirely: they reached zero. In that absolute proximity, they underwent an absolute transformation, sliding toward and ultimately ending in death.

Check out seven projects heading off to the playa from this season’s build at The Box Shop!

Inikadowa by @lynnluzano is a towering 12-foot bird born from memory and myth, feathered with hundreds of Parol lantern panels — the iconic star of Filipino holiday celebration, reimagined as a symbol of ancestral light and diasporic resilience.

Jen Reed’s @compost_playground is a commentary on food waste featuring an oversized climbable Apple Core Jungle Gym. This burn, the Apple Core gets a new, vibrant skin.

Bobby Johnson’s first art car, Iron Butterfly, features 30’ butterfly wings that provide shade during the day and illuminate at night.

@klajdi_tsano ’s Tokens of Zero depicts the burnt remnants of Sequoia trees and is inspired by nature, transformation, and fire.

Pheobe Leung’s @sunnysideup__o__ mirrors the horizon where sun meets sea, capturing the ephemeral beauty of sunrise and sunset and will feature shifting color patterns at night.

Mojca Pacnik’s HOPE ( @art.lotus.hope ) is a metal lotus flower rising from the desert dust and will be illuminated by night. It was completed at The Box Shop after coming all the way from Slovenia!

@danaalbany ’s newest piece is a female figure crafted out of salvaged materials.

Look out for them on playa - and help us congratulate these hard-working visionaries and their crews in the home stretch of delivering and installing their artworks at @burningman 2026!

Last weekend over 1,000 intrepid puzzlers descended upon The Box Shop seeking an enigmatic figure known as “Percy.”
This free month-long scavenger hunt, Pursuit, was created by 15 friends to “make mischief,” sending inquisitive searchers on a race to solve mysteries across the city at locales including The Box Shop. The hunt is still on, so go to sfpursuit.org to try the latest missions - though of course we can’t predict where it will take you!

I’m making a dragon shelf and entered a side quest in: metalworking (??!) 🐉 I made these custom metal flame brackets to hold up the shelf ledge that I’m attaching to my dragon. up until now I’ve used the standard L-shaped brackets you can get at any hardware store, but last year my friend @cstigler suggested I try making my own custom ones… so one year later here we are! (I do think one year is a fair amount of time to let a new hobby side quest like this incubate in one’s mind)

I had a lot of fun visiting Charlie’s metalworking studio, @boxshopsf , which is one of our city’s oldest and largest art fabrication studios - a true sf art institution! while we were working on my little 2” brackets it was really cool to see the colossal steel installations (like the “entwined” light trees that were once displayed in Golden Gate Park!) and ppl working on big stuff w sparks going everywhere. I have a lot more metal bracket ideas that Charlie kindly cut out for me too so maybe this is the beginning of a mini metal arc where I design custom brackets for my shelves…
