! we are excited to share images and updates from our recently completed Historic Renovation Project for Kiefer Public Schools ~ shown here just prior to move-in.

This 30k sf facility will now house 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in the long vacant / 100+ year old school building in Kiefer, OK.

…some goals in this work were to highlight and coordinate with the historical nature of the building, update facilities, and thoughtfully reprogram space with contemporary educational amenities.

Also of note are the many large scale / environmental graphics which are derived from some special access to the KPS photo archive going back a century (or more).

We extend our gratitude to Superintendent Shaw for his trust and friendship in this important work.

! I am excited to share images and updates from “Big MOdels” ~ a solo exhibition of new work currently on view @108contemporary

-
Big MOdels is a series of five large study models (or little architectures) which mash-up representation, scale, surface, and beyond.

These works advance playful and exploratory nature of their smaller counterparts into larger-than-typical scales ~ developing special space as a result.

We have a special performance event in the works for the next first Friday 9/4

!!! We are excited to announce “The Vernon Witness Center” ~ a project for @vernonametulsa w/ major support from the @mellonfoundation

via Vernon AME:
“We believe the Historic Vernon AME Church is not merely a surviving structure, but the singular, living custodian of the Black Community’s truth regarding the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. As the only Black-owned property on Greenwood Avenue to physically withstand the aerial and ground assault, Vernon AME Church is an enduring, sacred witness.

Our Vision for “The Vernon Witness” interpretive center is rooted in the architecture itself. We are committed to honoring the materials that physically absorbed the violence, particularly the basement, which served as a sacred space of refuge - a foundation that holds the indelible truth of survival and community life.”

via PfJ/A ~ AJ:
“ …the essential idea is to support and amplify what Vernon is already doing - which is the preservation and dissemination of Vernon’s important history from Vernon’s point of view.

In The Witness Center Project - we intend to reveal and stabilize as we can the original surfaces and materials of Vernon’s historic basement space which has been covered up over time. To open the space up. We also intend to thoughtfully go back with support spaces which can sustain ongoing interpretation and outreach - such as formal archive, library, and office areas.

Our team also plans to restore and preserve the Vernon AME refuge space at the East end of the Basement - which is perhaps the most important space within the Witness Center and very meaningful for American History.” by @bpfarc

It has been a fast and fun few days making this work in Santa Fe ~ We are all very grateful for the wonderful @currentsnewmedia colleagues, interns, and SF community for their interest and support.

“Quadraphonic Spring” is an intimate performance venue which graphically maps and mutates a sacred hot spring onto the interior surfaces of a suspended paper dome.

The sacred hot spring and its history, currently known as “Spence Hot Spring within the Valles Caldera” juxtaposes against the nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory and its relationship to land, technology, and geothermal heat.

The dome environment incorporates looping spatial audio by Michael Demps. Entitled “SPRING”, the score draws linkages with the interior graphics through site recordings, ancestral rhythms, and quadraphonic composition.

The mash-up of this audio score within a re-presented sacred environment is meant to stoke a deeper and more critical engagement of both elements - framing conversations about humanity, technology, and ecology over time.

POST SCRIPT
This #WIP has been in development for a few months and was installed over the course of 6/10-13 in its first iteration. During creative development we talked at length about the strange nature of a geothermal hot spring located (very) near the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Little did we know that this initial debut (6/13) would coincide with the Israeli bombing of Iran ~ and the subsequent thoughts of nuclear war/ global annihilation.

Over spring break, @_fakejones and @bpfarc brought us along as they spent the week bringing their latest magic trick, the “Organ Drone Dome” from Tulsa to the Venice Architecture Biennale. However, traveling internationally with your “project in a bag” could hardly go without a few hang-ups.

“We arrived in Italy Saturday morning around 10:30 a.m., but our “project” bag got delayed. So we spent most of the day with Air France baggage support trying to figure out what’s going on… We also didn’t have some of our personal items, but were able to get them on Sunday to begin setting up as scheduled on Monday. We then took a water taxi from the airport to Venice, which is a really beautiful wooden, kind of open air boat – power boat – not a gondola, but like a water taxi boat that brought us near our hotel.”

Most of that Sunday was spent just settling in and walking, touring, and eating food. We went and viewed significant architecture, like the “Chiesa di San Nicola da Tolentino” and began installing our project in the Palazzo Mora on Monday. We would typically work from 10am to 4:30pm and then spend the rest of the day sightseeing, shopping, and eating. We finished on Tuesday, the project installed really smoothly and looked beautiful.”

This quick trip overseas during spring break allowed time for them to come back and continue projects locally, as well as spread the word about the piece of Tulsa that will be on view—to make sure it is on the summer vacation itinerary for those who are planning to attend the Biennale in Venice, or may want to now add that to their list of must-see exhibitions.

Imagine being able to experience one of Tulsa’s most significant examples of Art Deco architecture half a world away, in the Palazzo Mora in Venice, Italy… through an interactive suspended paper dome? Tulsa-based architecture studio @pfeiferjones is doing exactly that; through an opportunity of creative cultural exchange, it is displaying its “project in a bag” at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.

Initially meeting back in college while studying architecture at Oklahoma State University, both moved outside the state to follow their career paths but found their way back to Tulsa about three years ago.

@_fakejones background was in this cross between the music world and the architectural design world. By building on established working relationships with a group that had exhibited previously at the Venice Biennale, Pfeifer Jones received an invitation to be a part of the exhibition this year— it was the perfect opportunity to showcase a local expression of their performance art installations on an international level.
