My first time visiting DCA during the Lunar New Year festival. 2026 is the year of the horse. There were so many fun characters, activities, and snacks. The processional featured Mulan, Mushu, Chip n Dale, and Horace, along with some lovely dancers. I got a word of the year written for me in Chinese characters.

A fun highlight of the day was meeting up with @adrifttogether and the @dcl_duo!

Our stay at Pixar Place Hotel was really fun over Thanksgiving break. We tried the food options and tested out the DCA designated hotel guest entrance. We thought the proximity was great. The only issues were a very loud neighbor and the slow elevator situation.

On road trip day 3 we made a quick stop at the Pierre capitol building, and headed west for the Badlands National Park. We stopped for gas ⛽️ at an interesting truck stop that had goats 🐐 roaming around. Just outside the park is a national site where they used to store ICBM’s during the Cold War days. We browsed the museum there for a little bit. The missiles were moved in the early 90’s.

We had one quick hike and several overlook stops at the park. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Lakota Sioux, who called it “mako sica” or “bad lands” due to its rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions. The park’s geological formations were created over millions of years through the deposition and erosion of sedimentary rock layers. The area is full of dinosaur fossils, and the gift shop had a paleontologist working on chiseling out some bones. We saw some bison and prairie dogs in the grassland areas.

We stopped by Wall Drug for dinner on the way to Keystone where we stayed two nights at the Comfort Inn near Mount Rushmore. The food at Wall Drug was not good, and the “free water” was worse. 😂 Definitely a skip for me if we ever drive this again.

In June we set off on a big road trip across the plains to stop at a few National Parks. First we picked up cousin Katherine in Topeka, then headed up to South Dakota after staying one night in Nebraska.

Our first site was the Laura Ingall’s Wilder family settlement in DeSmet, SD. This site is from the By the Shores of Silver Lake book. They had a very nice tour of the historical buildings, the schoolhouse and boarding house, and the house that Pa built in town. The homestead site was a little outside of town with a lot of activities and a large gift shop. After the tour we headed for Pierre for the night, so we could see the capitol building in the morning.
