Breathing new life into a long-vacant Grade II listed building in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Planning permission was granted today for our mixed-use development at 85–87 Vittoria Street. The proposal sensitively extends the existing building to create commercial and residential spaces arranged around a shared courtyard.

The architecture takes its cues from the historic frontage, which we’re particularly excited to see brought back to life.

A playful response to the Digbeth vernacular. This new build Class E development at 46-47 Meriden was granted planning approval this afternoon.

The three volumes of Willow House are arranged around an existing willow tree, stepping back to frame views across the landscape and down the valley.

From the outset, our client wanted a distinctly modern home rooted in local materials and traditional building forms.

Influenced by the deep burnt-orange and brown tones of the ironstone geology of the site, Hiaven’s concrete was given an earthy pigmentation so the walls took on a colour closer to the surrounding geology than conventional grey concrete.

The intention was for the building to feel as though it has grown out of the landscape. Born of the earth…

Setl is designed to fit the Jewellery Quarter’s industrial character. Using glazed terracotta and red brick to reference the traditions of Birmingham’s architecture, the design also draws on the narrative of the Hinge Works which once occupied the adjacent site.

Photographic Works, Camden Street - for over half a century the site was occupied by Munn’s Brothers Photographic Works, who developed films for companies including Boots and independent chemists in Birmingham and across the West Midlands.

The facade pays homage to its photographic past with the design of the brick piers, suggestive of repeating film strips.

How do you start a hospital? Apparently by falling off a chair, breaking your leg and discovering how difficult it is to get treatment in 1845.

That’s what happened to George Briscoe in Wolverhampton, inspiring him to fund the development of the Royal Hospital.

Over 150 years later, the building and surrounding area were in need of regeneration. Now in its third phase, BPN has supported Morro in transforming the Royal Hospital and adjacent sites into a high-quality residential development for WHG, YMCA and ASAN, providing much-needed social housing for a range of needs and ages.

With support from Homes England and the West Midlands Combined Authority, the project is nearing completion and helping to raise design standards in the area.

At the heart of Gilders Yard is the Grade II Listed former J. Ashford & Son factory, a once renowned manufacturer of gilt jewellery, cuff links and dress studs. These items formed the basis of design concepts for the carefully inserted new buildings in this regeneration project.

Ghost House - part bunker, part pavilion and very much its own thing.

A precisely detailed concrete house, tucked into the landscape, winner of a RIBA West Midlands Regional Award and shortlisted for RIBA House of the Year 2019.

The redevelopment and restoration of the iconic Grade II* Listed Grand Hotel began in 2012 and we undertook the refurbishment of the Imperial & Whitehall Chambers as part of the retail and offices phase.

The chambers only operated as an active part of the hotel for two years, in 1879 they were reworked by owner Isaac Horton into luxury commercial chambers and municipal spaces. A relatively straightforward task due to his clever design of the building - five individual facades, all linked internally but easily partitioned off and used independently.

Over 100 years later working for Hortons’ Estate, we stripped back poor-quality later additions, uncovering hidden fireplaces, ornate glazed screens and original hand-painted signage recording the building’s former tenants. Rather than conceal these discoveries, we incorporated into the design, giving new occupiers a tangible connection to the building’s past.

With its unassuming exterior, the Compound left the RIBA judging panel wondering if they had found the right address and more importantly, how to get in. An apt introduction to a project that reveals itself rather than announces itself, it went on to receive the West Midlands Regional Award and Conservation Award, while being shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Prize; @javelinblock also took home Client of the Year.

Today, the space regularly appears on television and is hired for photography, music videos and private media events. Steven Spielberg had no such trouble finding it, using the Compound as his working base while filming Ready Player One.
