“When you do stuff as like second generation and then sort of like our culture finds us more and more as we grow older and we don’t know why we do those things, but then we’re like oh mom and dad didn’t like that or someone they are auntie only speaks this language or grandma only speaks this language and then you’re almost forced to go deep and deep into those realms. Then yeah, God or the universe, shows you , tells you Wagwan then you just follow with that“

“ Yeah keeping people alive That’s that’s what I think is the biggest thing because like music there to keep us alive to know that people feel the same thing. You know you can either listen sad so you can get sad. You can listen to some music that’s gonna make you move you’re gonna forget about things and yeah, I guess that’s for me. That’s what they keep people alive you know”

“ What is styling ? Styling ? Honestly I see it as giving an item new life. You know the designer creates it and it’s the purpose to be worn but then sometimes people you know they kind of think clothing is worn and done. It’s not stylist grab the clothing and give it multiple lives and like it’s like a whole journey”

“ having not the deepest ties to the motherland or to where my background or where my ethnicity originates from. Has sort of allowed me to be shaped by the world around me . I have lived those experiences learnt and as an artist you stand on the shoulders of the giants that came before you and so when you’re able and blessed as I have been to experience those triumphs of of humankind you get to take bits and pieces and moulded into your own style . I would say culturally maybe not the deepest times but I’m a student to the world around me”

“I’m proud to be from Somalia,I’m proud to be African-American but I was like I don’t really like actually have that much connection or like I don’t really feel that in .I’m not like yeah I’m from like freaking Kansas City. I’ve never been there, I’ve never been to America so it was like kind of felt weird, but now I’m just like I’ll just I’m like I’m part of the diaspora ,like I’m f*cking everywhere and feels like so freeing as an artist in Australia, right now you know there’s a whole new generation of like afro- diaspora people, we are creating the scene - creating the space we’re like helping the generations like the younger than us like have the comfort and the space to just be who they are. They don’t have to be like a certain type of person they can be loud and be quiet, like whatever !”

“And the other one is a chair I have called the ‘Laundry chair’, which is the chair that everybody has in their room. That is just there to collect clothes . You can’t sit on it. It’s a chair that we don’t need to sit on but it’s designed to hang your things off . I feel like everyone can relate to. The intention behind this piece as well is a problem that we all have . And I have chose to make something to solve that.”

“Being second and third generation, of a culture can kinda get a bit confusing with your identity . In terms of your not really one thing, you’re not really the other ! I would say the most common question I am asked is - Where I am from ? , and I always say ‘my grandparents are from’ - to explain my own ethnicity but it doesn’t necessarily mean that I relate to it,because I grew up in Australia and my parents are Australian so I guess yeah,it kind of makes you feel a little bit like in between two places in the third space”
