Another @brothercycles BigUn ride complete. The weather was spot on and the trails were riding so well. Some sections are on our local trails which is cool, linking together & totalling a 70 mile route it’s always a reminder of how challenging our local trails can be.

Thanks to @brothercycles for putting events like BITW & the BigUn on year after year.

My @ronsbikes X @frankthewelder EVOO, Thoughts of a modern XC MTB and of a retro 90-00’s MTB meant two bikes were on my wish list. After some thought the EVOO kind of ticked both boxes, modern geometry with some nostalgic features.
A few messages later and @ultraromance rummaged around in his barn and found an unpainted frame & fork. These were then painted in a custom matte green colour with NASA grey decals.
Quite a few NOS finds on the build, including some lovely CNC machined Precision Billet Pro Shift V-Brakes.
I felt obliged to build this a certain way at first but I’m pleased I decided to go down my own route. I loved riding Shimano M950 parts as a youngster, but I couldn’t pay the price that kit is asking for these days when I remember how much RRP was. I also love a clutch mech, so hunted out some NOS SRAM gearing, Paul levers, Titanium Thomson finishing kit, Spares box Middleburn cranks, Royce Titanium BB, Chris king headset, seat clamp and Classic hubs. The hubs were in a sorry state when I received them but after a thorough strip down, service and axle end cap conversion they now roll awesome. Titanium bolts throughout to finish it off along with one of the 1000 10 year anniversary @fidlockbike CNC bottle mounts.

Looking forward to ripping this thing on the single track.

A few pictures from a couple of weeks back on Vancouver’s North Shore with @danistratfordflynn, celebrating our anniversary.
Strangely it feels like returning to another home visiting this place. Lots of time spent walking, hiking, exploring new and favourite spots. British Columbia is beautiful with its endless amount of outdoor space. A must visit for anyone in to spending time outdoors.

A few phone snippets from a little trip into Belgium 🇧🇪 with Pie @luigi.del.renzio. Amazing cycling infrastructure in Belgium, light years ahead of the UK. Plenty of canal paths and segregated cycle lanes. Flat and windy sums it up.

A few camera pictures from a week in the peaks with @danistratfordflynn to celebrate our anniversary. Surrounded by trees, lakes and mountains, with the toughest decisions being where to eat that day and what trails to walk it was super chilled.

A few more @brothercycles BITW pictures. I’m normally much more comfortable on the other side of the camera lense but thank you to @christinegei.ger for capturing this portrait and shots of my bike setup. Also @john_at_breathe for the last picture (Snack checking)

An awesome weekend spent @brothercycles In the wild on the Isle of Purbeck. A really nice route through all sorts of terrain, plenty of chunk to keep us entertained as well as enough cruisy points for chilling & chatting.

Always good to call in @thewoodscyclery on the way down, see what they have going on as well as grabbing a coffee and last minute bits and bobs.

Camping for a couple of nights with the usual faces as well as meeting some great new people to ride with over the weekend was really cool.

Massive shout out to @brothercycles for putting these events on year after year, happy 15th birthday guys 🥳

Sometimes the bike industry is a bit crap and invents standards for what seems like the sake of it…

Whilst building my @curtisbikes I knew I wanted to run @betdcomponents Middleburn cranks. I had some old square taper RS7’s I fitted temporarily, knowing I would later look into something a little more modern but classic looking to replace them.
Middleburn do not currently have a Gravel specific setup but were awesome and sent me some different axle lengths and bits to have a play around with, so much versatility something would work.
I wanted to dial the fit in and get the chainline as close to industry standard as possible. Soon realising this wouldn’t be exact, regardless of the axle length something had to give. I found a setup that only used 1.5mm of spacers keeping the setup really clean, although the chainline was pretty close the spider was too close for comfort to the chainstay.
Measuring several times over and over I thought I could perhaps modify the DUO spider I had. The inner ring shoulders were machined off and the rear of the chainring bolts slightly recessed (Not all the way as material is slim here), then the machined areas were chemically blackened. I’m pretty stoked with how this turned out. I owe a massive thank you to the team @betdcomponents for allowing me the freedom to try several setups before coming to this point. At some time in the future there will hopefully be a plush Middleburn solution we can all lust over, so keep you eyes peeled.
