POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A friend from my yoga teacher training recently asked me to record a video of myself going from Downward Dog into a handstand for her eight-year-old son.
As I was recording it, I found myself thinking back to the first time I saw someone do that movement and wondering, How did he do that?
A year and a half into my yoga practice, I watched someone float from Downward Dog into a handstand, then softly back down, hovering his feet just above the mat before setting them down. It looked effortless, as if gravity didn’t exist.
A seed was planted: I wanted to learn how to do that.
Six weeks later, I suffered an avulsion fracture of my humerus playing hockey. I needed surgery, spent six weeks in a sling, and wasn’t sure if I’d ever practice yoga the same way again—never mind do a handstand.
After surgery, I started physiotherapy twice a week and worked on my exercises three times a day. I was determined to get my shoulder back.
Three months later, I was cleared to practice yoga again. At first, it was painful. I had to use my left arm to support my right just to lift it into certain poses.
Slowly, things got easier.
Seven months after being cleared by my surgeon, I signed up for my first inversions workshop. We learned headstands, crow, and handstands.
My journey had begun. Continued on comments… taken in Toronto, Ontario by @bradstrickert

I can’t wait for the day I’m able to fully lift the arm away and balance each of these shapes as I transition…. Perhaps by next summer I’ll have a few of these unlocked. taken in The Bentway by @bradstrickert

I didn’t start waking up early and going outside because I knew of all benefits. I started training outside during Covid when gyms were closed and found that I loved being outside and watching the sun come up. It’s only been in the last few years I’ve been hearing about the science behind it. The things I’ve personally noticed:

1. I feel better, mood, energy, focus.
2. This one is wild… my vision improves throughout the summer. Over the winter it gets worse and I need glasses to read. After 4-6 weeks of watching the sunrise I don’t need them anymore.
3. The city is very peaceful in the morning. There’s only a small number of people (usually the same 20-25 people) I see out every morning.

As the days get cooler I know I’ll be forced back inside soon and will wait for the cold weather to pass so I can get back out here again next year.

Another added bonus is catching a sunrise like this one. Simply magical! taken in Toronto C•A•N•A•D•A by @bradstrickert

Getting back to it post a break after ear surgery. Going from not barely being able to hear to almost perfect has been an interesting journey. A quiet world when you live in a big city is actually quite peaceful yet also very isolating. There are moments where I miss the peacefulness but they do not outweigh the simplicity of being able to hear a persons voice, not guess at what they’re saying, hearing birds and the leaves blow in the wind, or the sound water in a creek are all back.
I initially thought I had permanently lost my hearing from years of very loud music in my car, at music festivals and from my headphones at the gym so the ideas of it being fixable seemed impossible. But it turned out I had Otosclerosis a medical term for too much bone growth in my stape bones which cause them not to vibrate properly. Removing each of them and replacing them with a tiny prosthesis is a permanent fix and very easy surgery. There is a chance it might not work so they do one ear at a time but the results for me have been incredible. I had a lot of anxiety going into the first surgery fearing I might completely lose hearing in the hear, after I couldn’t wait to get the second one done. I’m very fortunate to get my hearing back and am now very protective of it. I carry @hearsearplugs with me and will put them in for when in a loud environment that I can’t control. And usually advocate for others to do the same when they ask why I’m using them.
The isolation that comes with hearing loss is by far the worst part and is one of the leading causes of dementia. So for those that have read this far. Protect your ability to hear. Don’t take it for granted.

Plans that involve being upside down. Plans that involve trying something new. Plans that remind me I’m stronger than I think.

Sometimes the best plans look like falling out of a handstand and laughing about it after 🤪🤸🏼

Still riding the energy from last weekend and getting ready to flip things upside down again as our March Handstand Series with @bradstrickert begins

Confidence isn’t built all at once. It’s built layer by layer.

This March, we’re breaking handstands down into smart, accessible progressions with @bradstrickert. Strength, alignment, awareness, and the confidence that comes from understanding how to build, not just trying to hold.

Whether you’re brand new to inversions or refining your practice, this 4-week series meets you where you are and builds from there.

Stability ball handstand challenge. I watched someone do a version of this the other day and figured I’d give it a try. Might be easier with a slightly smaller stability ball. #Handstandstabilityball #stabilityballchallenge by @bradstrickert
