The Incredible Race of Brady McHugh

The Meet of Champions always delivers incredible performances, results, stories. This past weekend, one of the most incredible ones is that of Brady McHugh - who finished 8th in the 800m.

➡️What makes this so incredible?

To start, Brady runs for Shore Regional, and it’s rare to see a Group 1 athlete crack the top 10. He’s also a 10th grader - making him one of only 4 boys to do this in 2025. And of them, a list including Quincy Pearson (4th/TJ), Jael Hester (5th/55h), and Evan Beam (7th/LJ), Brady was the only one in an oval event.

🏆 Incredible! But we’re just getting started.

He did so with a 1:56.18, the 5th fastest time run by any sophomore in US this year. But it doesn’t end there - he did it by winning the slower second heat. Imagine how much faster he runs if he’s in the fastest heat!

Underclassmen performing well at the MOC certainly isn’t anything unusual. This year, a total of 6 boys and 21 girls cracked the top 10. Paige Sheppard (1600m) and Reagan Moore (800m) even won gold medals.

But out of these 27, the majority of them, and certainly everyone in the 800m-3200m, runs every season. In fact, many of them have been racing year-round since middle school.

Not Brady. As a 9th grader, he played football (fall) and lacrosse (spring) along with his side gig, winter track. While he did run XC this fall, we won’t see him in track spikes until 2026; he’s playing lacrosse again this spring.

Oh, and one more incredible thing. He did it in his teammate’s uniform and spikes - a full size too small.

As luck would have it, someone mistakenly took his spike bag during his warmup downstairs in the Ocean Breeze practice track. Just moments before his race, he frantically alerted his coach, and a tense and ultimately fruitless search and rescue mission ensued. Teammate Tyler Zacharczyk loaned him his top and spikes that allowed him to even race at all.

We wish everyone the best of luck at the national meets, and we congratulate everyone on their MOC performances. And a big congrats to Brady McHugh, the 10th grade G1 lacrosse player who ran USA#5 out of a slower section with someone else’s (smaller) spikes. taken in Ocean Breeze Park & Athletic Complex by @bradylax11
