What’s a Barnacle Baby?

If you’ve heard the term ā€œvelcro babyā€, you get it.

In short, they’re attached. Like barnacles. Like velcro.

I believe that while we are not perfect people we are perfect in our creation. That we are made in God’s image and God doesn’t make mistakes.

In my career, I worked extensively in the neuro-developmental community. Basically, kids and adults with diagnoses that I call ā€œAlphabet Soupā€, i.e. ADD, ADHD, ASD, ODD, OCD, SPD, the list goes on. I still hold the belief that these people were created perfection.

It wasn’t my job to ā€œfixā€ them. That’s insane to me.

My calling in chiropractic was to see a whole person, really see them, and then use the tools I had to assess whether or not there was interference with the sending and receiving of messages within the nervous system. The operating and information system we were created with.

Is the brain interpreting reality to the best of its ability?
And if so, are the messages it’s sending down distorted or hindered in any way?
And if not, is a person’s expression of those messages accurate to what they’re feeling?

All questions I devoured finding answers to.

Sometimes the answers resulted in a very different quality of life. Like, miracles. Night and day differences.

Sometimes not. Sometimes we had a traumatic brain injury and we would always have a traumatic brain injury.

So, how does this relate?

Well, I know my Barnacle is a perfect creation. But, at the same time, I didn’t know a healthy nervous system could be in that type of expression.

Loud.
Intense.
Sensitive.
High needs.
Full contact sleep.
And it was never ending.

This is different than colic (although we did deal with some reflux issues).

It’s a temperament.
It’s who she is.

Pre-Georgia, I would’ve made an educated guess that there was some underlying chronic nervous system dysfunction. But regardless of anything I’ve found, her temperament and the expression of it is unchanging.

She’s the reason why this project exists.

Every Georgia (and child, in general) deserves a mom who will show up in the way these babies need us to, and that starts with understanding and acceptance. by @brainbasedmom

Helloooo šŸ‘‹šŸ¼

I’m the mom behind Brain Based Mom.

My name is Alex. I’m a Doctor of Chiropractic with much additional post-graduate schooling in the nervous system and brain development. My career involves the practical application of combining my love of holistic, root cause solutions and objective data and research.

These two concepts, alternative medicine + objectivity, are often thought of as mutually exclusive in our society, but I can say with absolute confidence that when you combine them, that’s the secret sauce.

I practiced this way for 7 years—addressing nervous system restoration for those with chronic health issues. I freaking loved it.

In that time, I also became a mom.

And things changed.

I gave birth kneeling on my bedroom floor at 4:22am, just like I had planned. Unknowingly, that was the easy part.

The hard part was birthing a Barnacle Baby.

My daughter, Georgia, has completely altered my life trajectory.

Everything I thought I knew went out the window.
It had to.
I realized I approached babies, kids, and even adults, like little text books.

As much as I value approaching health and life’s problems with a holistic, 360 lens, I actually had a very mechanical way of finding solutions.

ā€œGarbage in, garbage out.ā€
ā€œDo this, not that.ā€

As if people were made up of giant lists to be checked off. Check off the right items at the right time and you’ll be healthy. Don’t and you won’t.

And sure, there is truth to that.

But my gosh, there is definitely so much more nuance.
Complexity.
Gray.
Layers.
Cycles.

You can be doing all the right things, including taking care of your nervous system, and sometimes sh*t is just gonna be whacked.

It’s not that I didn’t know this. I’ve cared for and coached people through this for years.

But I didn’t KNOW. In my body. I didn’t know.

And I do now.

And that’s why I’m here. To help you uncover what you know. So you can be the most aligned version of you. For yourself and your baby(ies).

I hope you stick around. Thanks for being here! āœŒšŸ¼ by @brainbasedmom

This is the project that came to me in a dream when my daughter, Georgia, was 4 months old.

Brain Based Mom.

Somehow the IG handle, the domain, the email—everything—were all available. Unclaimed.

Wild.

So, I grabbed them all that same day, and I've been sitting on them.

For over two years now.

Straight up, this just terrifies me.

I know why, but, at the same time, I don't know why. Logically, I'm beyond qualified. But, internally, I'm a freaking poser.

These little logo cuties have gone through many iterations since I had that dream, and I'm sure there will still be more to come, but I like this enough for now. :) We're just gonna go with it and see what happens.

If birthing a baby at home and building a couple of businesses from scratch has taught me anything, it's that you must have a plan, but also you just kind of wing it.

And that's because learning happens on different levels, you know? There's the theory and there's the experience.

I'm finally ready to hit Full Send on the experience part.

What can you expect in this little corner of the 'gram?
Lol, I wish I could tell you right now.

So, here's what I'll say.

It won't be boring.
It will be raw.
It will be deep.
It will be honest.
It will be thought-heavy.
It will be well researched and experienced.

It may feel validating.
It may feel celebratory.
It may feel cozy and affirming.
It may also sometimes feel provoking.
It may also sometimes feel offensive.
It may also sometimes feel convicting.

This—all of it—is good.

At the end of the day, the purpose is to help you be the most aligned version of you. And that involves peeling away a lot of layers. Sometimes that feels like relief, and sometimes that feels like death.

Wouldn't you know, they're two sides of the same coin?

I hope you stick around. I'm gonna make it worth it. by @brainbasedmom

If I’m in conversation and hear any of these, you can bet you’ll receive a side eye šŸ‘€

1. ā€œI turned out fine.ā€
Oh, did you though?? Your need to perform or people-please, inability to confront someone you love about something you care about, unsettling rage you’re avoiding, that little addiction only you know about, refusal to sit with silence, lack of hobbies, and chronic fatigue/GI/autoimmune condition(s) would like to differ. On the off chance you really are fine, is that what you want for your children? For them to just be ā€œfineā€? I’d rather my children thrive.

2. ā€œIt’s just the way we’ve always done it.ā€
Using a strategy or tactic that has been dismantled just because you don’t know how to do it differently or you don’t want your kid to be ā€œthe weird oneā€ is a cop out. There are many well respected parenting educators who have fantastic books, free resources, & affordable communities. You can learn new things & have the courage to put them into application.

3. ā€œIt’s in the Bible.ā€
I say this as a Jesus-following, Bible-believing Christian… *takes deep breath*… No, it’s not. The only thing you’re justifying with the Bible is spanking (or call it what it is—hitting) your toddlers & small children while standing on a couple of cherry-picked versus out of context with poor translation. You are playing God in your household & letting your child receive punishment for disobedience or ā€œsinā€ when Jesus already paid for it. Your child needs you to model Jesus, the father of the Prodigal Son, not act like God in the Old Testament.

4. ā€œBecause a [governing body/practitioner/influencer with conflicted interests] said so.ā€
When you’re making a parenting decision, this can’t be the only thing you rely on. Education is a starting point. You’re not supposed to end there but be inspired enough to go do your own actual digging, esp when the source may not have your best interest at heart. Take guidance, filter it thru your values, & come up with a sustainable solution that actually fits the little ones you’re responsible for.

What do ya say? Wanna be mom friends? šŸ’€

it is the year of our Lord 2026, and I have a confession. šŸ’

if you’re new around here, we enjoy changing our minds when we learn new information, and a lot of that new information we learn is through experience and wisdom-gathering.

I have no problem going first.

__________

Hi šŸ‘‹šŸ¼ I’m Dr. Alex Mosley. I have 10+ yrs of experience in entrepreneurship and facilitating the recoding of nervous systems (way before it was cool and trendy lol). I’m a mom of two girls, happily married to my business partner husband and I’m not scared to say the quiet parts out loud.

Lately, i’ve been seeing more pieces of content from different mothers along the lines of ā€œI’m so over ā€˜being a mom is hard’ content. No judgment tho.ā€

Being a mom and talking about your personal experience can be quite a pickle. šŸ„’

On one hand, telling the truth about motherhood and its difficulties means you’re honest and authentic. On the other, it means you’re ungrateful and a complainer.

Here’s what I know.
šŸ‘‰šŸ¼Not one mother comes out of this experience unscathed.

The process of becoming a mother is PAINFUL.

Physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally, financially, vocationally—there is not one angle that remains untouched by motherhood.

šŸ”„ We were created with a negative survival bias. Meaning we can get very comfy in our little dumpster fires. It takes a perceived stimulus that is PAINFUL to make us move and reorganize more so than it takes something perceived as positive.

Every single mother I know has had this process turn her life inside tf out. The before and after is truly unmatched.

šŸŒ€ it is a life-defining, life-altering event that singularly changes your trajectory more than any other decision you will make in your lifetime.

So, yeah. It’s hard. Objectively, it’s the hardest thing we go through. And I’m not going to stop talking about that just because some may perceive it as focusing on the bad when there’s so much good.

I will pass on the lessons in spiritual bypassing. šŸ™…šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Because you know what happens to that anger? That resentment? That bitterness? That rage?

It comes out sideways.
In autoimmune diseases. In mental disorders. In generational curses. In divorces. In estrangement.

And again, no amount of focusing on the positive makes that go away. That’s called avoidance. And it’s harmful to you and those you love.

✨ That said, I will always choose the nuance. Holding two truths at one time is a sign of wisdom and emotional maturity.

To use ā€œandā€ in your sentence instead of ā€œbutā€.

Yes, this is hard, AND I’m grateful.
This is hard, and I’m capable.
This is hard, and I’m supported.
This is hard, and I’m the best mom for my kids.
This is hard, and I trust myself.

Both, and. Your health depends on it. by @brainbasedmom

When you pursue a career in health, they don’t tell you you’ll also need business education if you ever want to make it on your own.

So, I’ve never actually had a ā€œreal jobā€. I went straight from earning my bachelor’s at Baylor University to earning my doctor of chiropractic at Parker University, and jumped right into earning for myself. That was in January of 2016.

What I’ve learned since then, through both mentorship and the school of hard knocks, was that a healthy, successful business is a reflection of a healthy, successful life.

Your business is a direct reflection of your nervous system.

I didn’t expect my first offer to be in conjunction with my husband and centered around business, but it all happened so organically, I’m stepping into it. Business is something I love, and I’m good at it.

I can’t see the whole picture, just the next best step. I’m leaning on faith to follow the path that’s been illuminated for me instead of forcing my own plan—launching my own independent thing centered around health.

That said, my part in DEEP SPACE is going to be health-focused. Where business and health intersect. Because business problems are personal problems in disguise, and to actually move the needle forward, we’ve got to address that sht.

Otherwise you will continue to consume information, making you *feel like* you’re moving, but not act on it.

You will stay stuck in your endless loop of consumption > burnout > overwhelm > repeat.

In addition to two monthly group calls with Clay, you’ll be in a monthly group call with me and will also receive a monthly 1:1 call with me, a Recoding Session. Both of my calls are completely focused on this intersection between business and health.

If you provide a service and the traditional models of coaching have been too ā€œbroā€-coded or too ā€œdivine feminineā€, this is for you.

I’ve been asked to coach from multiple people over the years, and I’ve always said no.

Now, I’m saying yes. by @brainbasedmom

I didn’t want to post this carousel of thoughts.
Still don’t.

It’s an act of obedience.

Let’s take a collective deep breath, fellow Christians.

It’s ok if this messes with your theology.
It’s ok if you want to disagree with me.
It’s ok to ask God ā€œseriously wtfā€
It’s ok to feel judgmental and righteous.

IT’S ALL GOING TO BE OKAY.

Our hope is not of this world.
It is in a person.
That person has a name.
His name is Jesus.

God comes for His kids. ALL of His kids.

The Way of Jesus and to Heaven is specific, not exclusive. It is open to anyone and everyone.

The Bible is absolutely clear on this.

And we should all rejoice at that. Because in spite of what I’ve done (and I’ve done things that would 100% keep me out of Heaven), I know that one day, I will look on the face of my Savior, who will receive me with open arms and a smile. I hope it’s a laugh, actually. I can’t wait to hear His laugh.

This isn’t about supporting or condemning behavior. We all know the act is horrific. No one disputes that.

It’s about living into our calling as Christians, and seeing a fellow human of the Imago Dei, as Christ would, and acting accordingly.

Stay humble, friends. Don’t slip into enemy territory.

My 4.5 year old drew this recent picture for me as a gift. She brought it to me by quietly opening the door to the nursery where I was rocking our new baby, whispering ā€œMama I made this for you!ā€, giving me a quick hug and her baby sis a quick kiss.

She came with tape and stuck it on the door before she walked out of the room.

The whole interaction was maybe 30 seconds. The sweetness of it brought tears to my eyes, while I also cannot help myself from interpreting it.

Searching for meaning, which absolutely exists, and also checking her development.

There’s so much I didn’t put on here. Like what does it mean if they don’t draw faces? If they’re drawing heads 4x the size of the body? If they have no body? If the heads aren’t circles? If they never use color? If they draw themselves as an animal?

The amount of questions you can ask and find reasonable answers to are kind of endless.

One time I had an 11 year old patient who drew herself as a mushroom. She also had a haircut that resembled a mushroom. She was deeply sensitive, struggled with bullies and self harm and identified as non-binary.

I pull that extreme example to demonstrate how dissociated she was from her body. A mushroom self-portrait is cute AND it is deeply meaningful to how this person saw herself and related to her inner and outer world.

She couldn’t tell me that, but she could draw it.

If your kid is struggling with behavior or learning difficulties and you’re still trying to get to the root of it, send me a self-portrait and I’ll tell you what I see.

My oldest was a high needs barnacle baby. Touch was so important for her, contact sleep was non-negotiable. For every nap, for every bedtime. She couldn’t stay asleep without it until she was 2 years old.

This is a temperament thing. So at 4.5, she’s still a high touch, high needs, spicy, barnacle little girl. It just looks different now than it did when she was an infant.

My second baby’s temperament regarding sleep and touch is different. She loves deep pressure through a swaddle and will transfer very easily to an independent sleep space. She sleeps much longer stretches right next to me versus completely on her own but nevertheless, I don’t have to hold her, I can just be lying next to her and that seems to suffice for the most part.

However, I love holding her.
I love sleeping right next to her.

Even if consistent touch and responsiveness wasn’t as integral as it is for a healthy developing brain, I would still want to hold and sleep with her.

It’s also integral for my brain.

The slowness.
The bonding.
The resting.

I get it if you’re chasing littles and house chores need doing. If you’d personally rather pull a tooth than cosleep. So don’t hear what I’m NOT saying.

What I am saying is if your baby has a temperament where they *could* easily get used to sleeping in their own space but you’d rather hold them and sleep with them, ignore the ā€œyou know if you were just consistentā€¦ā€ sleep training advice.

Hold your baby, and don’t think twice.

After fully immersing myself in the nervous system and its practical applications for over a decade, Mom Mask is the framework I’ve come up with using all I know, including the parts I would only know after becoming a mother to a little spicy cayenne pepper myself. šŸŒ¶ļø

I’m in the process of getting all the backend things ready, so I can officially hit full send on getting to help people again. 🄲

If you’re a mom who wants to close the gap between what you know and what you do in the moments where it matters most—this is for you. 🧔
