Da Coach is dead!!

Mike Ditka was a larger than life personality. He college ball at Pitt and was drafted by the Bears in the first round of the 1961 draft and he won the Rookie of the Year award and 2 years later he helped the Bears win a championship. He ended his playing career with the Dallas Cowboys with whom he won Super Bowl VI in his penultimate season as a player. After retiring he joined the Cowboys coaching staff and got another Super Bowl ring as an assistant coach when the Cowboys won Super Bowl XII. He eventually returned to Chicago as the head coach of the Bears who he coached to a win in Super Bowl XX. He became only the second person to win a Super Bowl as a player, an assistant coach, and a head coach. Tom Flores is the other.

Anyway Ditka was beloved and thanks to the Super Fans on SNL became even more legendary.

Ditka’s NFL legacy is huge but his impact on the world may be even bigger. In 2004 the race for Illinois Senate saw a guy named Jack Ryan running for the Republican Party but he dropped out when details of his personal life became public. There was a huge push to get Ditka to run in his place but the coach said no. Had he run he might’ve won as the guy he was facing was a relatively unknown guy named Barack Obama.

I didn’t like Ditka’s politics but I do have fond memories of his tenure with the Bears and I’m
Grateful he didn’t run in 2004 which he has said he very much regretted. Anyway in his honor I think Da Bears should beat Green Bay by the score of 161-3

Go Bears

Just finished reading Ghost Notes by Rikki Rockett from Poison and Rockett Mafia and listing to this Dandy Warhols cover which featured Rikki on drums and the legendary Jackie Fox on vocals along with Vicki Gunderson Peterson from the Bangles. I love me some rock and roll!!!

If you are famous and 80 I’d be a bit nervous. Couple of big losses this week. Dolly is just in another stratosphere but Tim Curry had quite the impressive body of work. by @brainbashtrivia

Here are some of the college football stadiums I’ve visited over the last few years. Which school will be next?

So…
I’ve been to all the state capitals
I’ve played trivia in every state
I’m on my way to playing pickleball in every state

Another thing I like to do is visit college campuses and when I do I always like to check out the football stadiums. I’m not a huge football fan by any stretch but college football stadiums have an aura to them. They are like cathedrals where Americans worship on Saturdays. I particularly like to try to get inside the stadiums and take a walk around.

I got to check two more off my list on this road trip. Fort Collins, Colorado home of the Colorado State Rams and Iowa City, Iowa home of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

CSU was setting up for a rodeo and concert while Iowa was in full on football mode.

Of course road trips are always more fun when you can take in some kitschy Americana roadside attractions like Carhenge which is another Nebraska thing. Who knew Nebraska had so much to do.

Got to explore a little bit more of Nebraska on my way back from Colorado. Turns out flyover country is kind of pretty. Stopped by the Wildcat Hills Recreation Area for a short hike and some bird watching then by Scotts Bluff National Monument for another hike it was Pure Nebraska.

Drove out to Colorado for my cousins wedding and stopped in Omaha to play some pickleball. Holy crap can Nebraskans play pickleball. I stopped by the Midwest Pickleball Club and it’s easily one of the nicest places I’ve played with some of the best and friendliest players I’ve seen. If you are ever in Omaha and looking for a game I highly recommend the Midwest Pickleball Club. Nebraska is now the 15th state on my Pickleball USA tour. by @brainbashtrivia
