The whole point of restoring sash windows for me is not just the challenge bit also the added bonus of keeping things away from landfill.
After all we need all the room we can get in landfill to put all the junk everyone else wants to buy in from because they think new is better.
.
This pair of old carpenters nips or pincers was no exception, as a quick rizz in the bench grinder to re shape and fit the ends for taking glazing pins and sash cord nails means not just space saved in landfill. But time saved on the bench…. Meaning more time to save more sashes from landfill!!!

Massively slowed up the time taken to remove old seized, mangled and chewed up screws.
.
Here im using the snappy plug cutter from @trendtooltechnology to remove the timber around the old screw along the timber to simply be removed around it. This way. The screws are proud and far easier to remove with causing excess damage to the surrounding timber.
.
Old screw holes can then easily be filled with a larger plug.
.
This is my Goto method for removing hinges screws that have had to be drilled out through the hinge leafs.
.
But more on that to follow!

How to get around the need for mechanical fixings.
When attaching a replacement sill either in part, or full, rather than using screws or dowels we rely on the resin. Raise the sill part up from the brick or stone, to leave a small gap for airflow so the timber can dry out using some 4° softwood wedges.
.
@repair_care_international_uk #dryflex resins are great for vertical splicing. And there’s no chance of fixings limiting movement, failing, or rotting the timber in the future.
And no holes to fill, so it saves time, not wastes it!

Two new etched panes supplied for the lower sash at the farmhouse project. This has since been. Painted, and should hopefully be ready to install later this week or early next.
.
That’ll be this project wrapped for the year, with I think four or five still to do next year.
.
Glazed and painted with linseed oil putty and paint - obviously.

Lots of people, know the festool sanding blocks, but not too many people, know they’re made for them by a company by a Swiss company called SIA. I’ve first found them at the P&D show a few years ago, various grits, firm and soft pads, that are just amazing for sanding profiles on window sashes.
.
They get used on every single project and are my preference sanding method now on profiles. No shortcuts, just a solid dependable method as part of a larger process…. I buy them online, and have no affiliation with either SIA or their UK distributors. Worth doing research on!.

This leaded light had a cracked pane, but at the time finding the 1/4” receded glass needed to make a replacement was proving really hard. So it was decided to simply make a repair to the broken pane using lead came. A week later the client found two broken leaded lights under the stairs (of all places), so it ended up coming back out and having the pane replaced in full. Here I’m attaching the beading with the amazing Hikoki 2nd fix nail gun.
.
The Gen 1 2nd fix nailer was my gateway tool onto the hikoki platform, and has since been changed with the even better Gen2 2nd fix nailer.

Removing side lights on this Georgian tripartite window.
.
Couple of the sashes are modern replacements.. not particularly bad, but not well fitted or looked after..
.
That said, they all needed to come out to be restore.
.
Side lights were nailed in, so after a while of playing find the hidden fixings, the multitool came out to play.
.
Most of you know me well enough to know it’s the Hikoki multivolt multitool, but the real keen eyed amongst you might not notice this is the Gen2 model playing today (the Gen3 is fine, I had this one with me.
.
The cutter is a Fein carbide cutter - pricey, but they last ages if you only use them on nails and fixings…. Even BiMetal blades get the hump quick if you throw them at screws and nails!!! by @brainfizzuk

Start of the last push on site for the year..
.
With the weather starting to enter thaw time of year when light starts to fade fast, good weather becomes ever difficult to predict, and even less reliable, it’s time to start prioritising frames and boxes.
.
The gargantuan sashes are sitting for a few days to fully garden after their last top coat, so we’re shifting pace onto this 5’x4’8” tripartite sash for one of the bedrooms.
.
It’s in a bit of a state and there’s some work to do. A new sill section is already made, there’s new bits of pulley stile, mullion repairs/splices and also new bits of inner. Nd outer case. Not to mention the work on the actual sashes…
When the weather is good, the boxes will be sorted. Then litescreened and painted. Once painted it’s onto sashes, starting with the centre sashes, the the side lites, uppers first as always.
.
Iv the weathers bad then it’s back to the gargantuan sashes.
.
Things may seem muddled, but in simple terms, it’s about getting what can be done dons when the weather is good, whilst also having things to get on with when the weather is bad.
.
Honestly there really is a plan! 😆

Most of the time I only need a tiny bit of Super finish, so to avoid having to clean the big mixing plate - which invariably encourages me to mix to much, and hence waste more - I usually mix small batches directly on the 6” metal knife. Less to waste and less to clean.
.
Don’t forget to thoroughly mix the two parts to one single colour, or it will never cure!
.
What do you use super finish for?

Machining my own parting beads might take a little time, but it’s less time than making a dedicated trip to the supplier, and then picking through their stock.
It also keeps everything in house meaning I can do small runs in quick time without needing to create space to store them.
.
Make or buy? You got a preference.

There’s always some willing to play the “cheap alternative”, you see them in the merchants everyday telling the bloke it’s 2p cheaper down the road, and always waning “your beat price - normally they’re also moaning about clients saying they’re too expensive! 😆
.
But here’s to great thing about our world, CHOICE, remember it’s about options, not cost…..
.
Sometimes not everything is for you!

How are you fixing the lite screens to a single window opening?
.
It’s asked a lot, so here’s the answer…
.
Ultimately it’s about keeping an eye on the expected weather, creating a suitable anchor point, and remaining a temporary measure, each window is generally a little different, so being able to think outside the box and adapt is your best asset.
.
Obviously there will be the comments about damaging window surrounds, having to make good after, and probably the classic “so you’re relying on the nails holding the architraves on”….
.
There’s. lots of options. This option got used here on this window…..
.
How would you do it??
.
I get my @litescreen through @linseedpaint (@linseedoilpaint for the US), I have no affiliation to either, bought them with my own money, love them….
