Next week, I start the inpatient service. As I was thinking back on my favorite attendings from my training, I remembered one cardiologist who showed up the first day and handed us each a half sheet of paper with his expectations. It was like someone had given us an instruction manual on how to ace the rotation.

So here is my instruction manual. Hope those of you who will be starting your first inpatient rotation soon find it helpful.

I’m back home, with my leg elevated and encased in my amazing cooling device, meds in my system, and a piña colada popsicle in hand.

I spent a lot of time talking this evening, and I am a bit out of words now. Suffice it to say, l am so proud of our graduating residents, and so humbled to be honored with this award from them.

So proud of our @sluneuroicu team for their exceptional care of Officer Brown 2 years ago. Traumatic Brian Injury (TBI) is such a heterogeneous disease process, with a recovery months to years out, with degree of recovery being difficult to predict. All that time fighting for just the right brain perfusion, just the right serum sodium, and preventing secondary brain injury often looks like us exhibiting all our OCD traits (but in the best possible way). We always tell our patient’s families to bring them back and visit if they are up for it, because outcomes like this are what make obsessing about CPP and ICP and serum Na and osms worth it. 💙🩵💙

Dr. Polhemus brings compassion and empathy to her clinical work in every encounter. I have worked with her in the inpatient setting, where patients and families are often faced with sudden life-changing illnesses, and in every encounter, Dr. Polhemus consistently strives to ensure the patient and their loved ones understand the working diagnosis and plan of care. She routinely pauses to answer questions, and makes herself available for the lengthy & complex discussions that often ensue. Laura also brings the same compassion to her leadership role as a senior resident on the team, motivating her colleagues to perform at a high level by setting an example of patient-centered and family centered education.
