Awareness • Support • Empowerment

BRANCHES shines a light on coercive control, economic abuse and post-separation abuse, raising awareness of the challenges women can face long after the initial crisis has passed.

We recognise the struggles of rebuilding confidence, navigating financial uncertainty, parenting through difficult circumstances and finding trustworthy advice and support.

Our purpose is to highlight the realities that are too often overlooked, share helpful resources and remind women that they are not alone in the journey ahead.

Because the story doesn't end when the relationship does.

**WHAT IS COERCIVE CONTROL?**

Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour used to intimidate, isolate, manipulate and dominate another person, gradually taking away their freedom, independence and sense of self.

**WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE — AND HOW CAN THE IMPACT LAST FOR DECADES?**

It isn't always physical. It can mean monitoring your movements, isolating you from loved ones, using fear or guilt to control you, undermining your confidence or restricting your access to money.

**Economic abuse and economic sabotage can be part of this control.** Lost earnings, debt, damaged financial security and disrupted careers can leave lasting consequences long after a relationship ends.

And separation doesn't always end the abuse. Post-separation abuse can continue through financial pressure, intimidation, legal conflict or parenting arrangements.

The relationship may end. The impact can last for years — sometimes decades.

At BRANCHES, we're raising awareness of what happens beyond the initial crisis, because leaving doesn't automatically undo the damage.

**WHAT IS ECONOMIC SABOTAGE?**

Economic sabotage can be part of coercive control, deliberately undermining a woman's financial security, independence and ability to rebuild.

One of its most devastating forms can be the outright refusal to support the children — financially, physically, or both.

Leaving one parent to cover every expense, manage every school run, attend every appointment and carry the entire responsibility of parenting alone.

Food, clothing, childcare, school costs and bills don't disappear because one parent refuses to contribute.

The consequences can be life-changing: depleted savings, debt, lost career opportunities and years spent trying to rebuild financial stability.

And for some women, the impact can last decades beyond the relationship.

**Children still need providing for. Life still has to carry on. And one parent is left carrying it all.**

At BRANCHES, we're raising awareness of the hidden realities of economic abuse and the lasting impact of post-separation abuse.

Because rebuilding is hard enough without carrying the entire burden alone.

**WHEN SOMEONE CONTROLS THE MONEY, THEY CAN CONTROL SO MUCH MORE.**

Economic abuse isn't just about money. It can be about controlling your choices, restricting your independence and making everyday life feel impossible without them.

It can mean questioning what you're allowed to buy, feeling guilty for spending on essentials, having to justify every penny or being made to feel you cannot survive financially on your own.

Over time, your world can become smaller. Your confidence can erode. Even the thought of leaving can feel impossible when you don't know how you'll afford to start again.

And the impact doesn't necessarily end when the relationship does. Debt, lost earnings, disrupted careers and the cost of rebuilding can follow women for years — sometimes decades.

**Money can become a means of control when your freedom depends on someone else's permission.**

No one should have to choose between financial security and personal safety.

At BRANCHES, we're raising awareness of economic abuse and the lasting damage it can cause, because understanding the control is an important step towards recognising it.

If this resonates with you, you deserve support, reliable information and the opportunity to make informed choices about your future.

🌿 **A WEEK OF AWARENESS | SATURDAY**

**THE LIFE THEY SEE ISN'T ALWAYS THE LIFE YOU'RE LIVING.**

They see the coffee dates, the smiles, the photographs and the moments that look carefree.

They don't see the unpaid bills, the financial anxiety, the exhaustion or the weight of trying to rebuild a life after abuse.

They see you carrying on. They may assume you're fine.

But behind closed doors, you could be navigating economic abuse, the consequences of coercive control, parenting pressures and the overwhelming cost of starting again.

Sometimes, the hardest part is feeling that you have to appear okay while everything feels anything but okay.

**You can look like you're moving forward and still be struggling with what was left behind.**

Recovery isn't always visible. Resilience doesn't mean you're never exhausted. And rebuilding takes more than simply putting on a brave face.

At BRANCHES, we're raising awareness of the realities that often go unseen — because the aftermath deserves understanding, not assumptions.

If this feels familiar, your struggle is real, even when others cannot see it.

🌿 **A WEEK OF AWARENESS | FRIDAY**

**“WHY DON'T YOU JUST LEAVE?”**

It's a question that can cut deeply when someone doesn't understand the reality of abuse.

They don't see the debts.
They don't see the financial damage.
They don't see the fear, the control or the cost of starting again.

They may not see the loss of financial independence, the worry about housing, the responsibility of supporting children or the years it can take to rebuild what was lost.

Leaving isn't always one decision. It can mean facing enormous emotional, practical and financial barriers — sometimes while the abuse is still ongoing.

And even when a woman leaves, the consequences may continue through economic abuse, legal pressures and post-separation abuse.

**So instead of asking, “Why doesn't she just leave?” perhaps we should ask, “What is making it so difficult for her to leave safely and rebuild?”**

We need understanding, not judgement. Awareness, not assumptions. Support that recognises the realities women face.

At BRANCHES, we're shining a light on the barriers that are too often invisible to others.

Because leaving is not always the end of the struggle. Sometimes, it's where the long journey of rebuilding begins.

🌿 **A WEEK OF AWARENESS | THURSDAY**

**WEAPONISED INCOMPETENCE: WHEN “I CAN’T” BECOMES A FORM OF CONTROL.**

Weaponised incompetence is when someone repeatedly avoids or performs responsibilities so poorly that another person is left to do them instead.

In relationships involving coercive control, this can become a pattern that leaves one person carrying the entire mental, physical and practical load.

It can look like:
- Claiming they cannot manage basic parenting responsibilities.
- Repeatedly “forgetting” appointments, school commitments or essential tasks.
- Refusing to learn how to do things they expect you to handle.
- Doing tasks badly so you feel forced to take over.
- Leaving you responsible for organising everything, solving every problem and picking up the pieces.

After separation, this can be especially exhausting when one parent is left managing the children's needs, school runs, appointments, costs and daily routines with little or no practical support.

The consequences go beyond frustration. Constantly carrying the load can affect your ability to work, earn, rest and rebuild your life.

**It's not always about being unable. Sometimes, the pattern is about making sure you remain responsible for everything.**

Not every unequal division of responsibilities is abuse. Context and repeated patterns matter. But when avoidance is used to maintain control or deliberately shift the burden onto someone else, its impact deserves to be recognised.

🌿 **A WEEK OF AWARENESS | WEDNESDAY**

**ECONOMIC SABOTAGE ISN'T ALWAYS TAKING YOUR MONEY.**

Sometimes, it's making sure you never have enough to leave.

Economic abuse can involve controlling access to money, restricting your ability to work, creating debt or undermining your financial independence.

It can also mean deliberately leaving you to carry the entire financial and practical responsibility for your children — refusing to contribute financially, refusing hands-on support, or withdrawing both.

The consequences can be devastating.

Savings disappear. Debt builds. Careers suffer. Opportunities are lost. And the cost of rebuilding can follow you for years, sometimes decades, after the relationship ends.

When you're already exhausted from surviving abuse, trying to regain financial stability can feel like another battle.

**Financial independence isn't a luxury. For someone experiencing abuse, it can be a lifeline.**

At BRANCHES, we're raising awareness of economic abuse, economic sabotage and the lasting impact they can have on women and children.

Because nobody should have to remain trapped by financial fear — or rebuild their entire future alone.

🌿 A WEEK OF AWARENESS | TUESDAY

**WHEN THE ABUSE MOVES TO YOUR REPUTATION.**

A smear campaign can be another form of post-separation abuse — an attempt to damage someone's credibility, isolate them from support and turn others against them.

It can involve twisting the truth, spreading allegations, taking events out of context or presenting a carefully constructed version of events to friends, family or professionals.

The impact can be deeply isolating.

You may feel you have to defend yourself constantly, explain your actions or prove your own character to people who have already formed an opinion.

You can lose friendships, support and trust — while privately trying to recover from the relationship itself.

**The cruelty is not only in what is said about you, but in the isolation and distress it can create.**

When children or legal proceedings are involved, the pressure can feel even greater.

You do not have to respond to every accusation or convince everyone of your truth. Where it is safe to do so, keep factual records, seek advice from an appropriate professional and lean on people who will listen without judgement.

At BRANCHES, we're raising awareness of the ways coercive control can continue after separation — including the emotional and social impact that others may never see.

**Your reputation is not your worth. Other people's opinions do not define your experience.**

🌿 Introducing the BRANCHES Podcast🌸

BRANCHES is a podcast dedicated to raising awareness of coercive control, economic abuse and post-separation abuse — shining a light on the realities that are often unseen, misunderstood or overlooked.

Because abuse doesn't always leave visible scars, and leaving doesn't always mean the struggle is over.

Through honest conversations, accessible information and compassionate insight, BRANCHES explores the lasting impact abuse can have on confidence, finances, parenting, wellbeing and independence — and the challenges women can face when trying to rebuild their lives long after a relationship has ended.

This is about the aftermath. The invisible burden. The financial and emotional consequences that can continue long after the crisis has passed.

It is about recognising experiences that are too often dismissed, challenging misconceptions and creating space for conversations that matter.

Above all, BRANCHES is about reminding women that they are not alone, their experiences matter, and rebuilding a life takes courage, time and support.

Because recovery isn't always straightforward. Resilience doesn't mean you never struggle. And rebuilding doesn't mean you have to become someone else.
